Matt Kalil Scouting Report

Position: Offensive Tackle
School: U.S.C
Class: Junior
Height: 6-7
Weight: 295
Draft Stock: Top 3. #1 OT

Pros

  • Ideal frame. Has the height at 6-7, and long arms
  • Very Quick feet, great lateral movements to mirror D-Lineman
  • Excellent in positioning, and understands angles. Does a great job walling off defenders
  • Lower body technique is superb. Footwork is polished, and has very good knee bend
  • Uses hands very well. Delivers a strong punch, and never allows defender to get away once engaged
  • Very consistent. Rarely commits penalties or allows sacks.
  • Would be an excellent fit in a ZBS
  • Does a good job moving on to the 2nd level to block Linebackers

Cons

  • Would like to see him add some weight, without sacrificing his athleticism
  • Is not a dominant "Road-Grader". Doesn't normally over-power guys
  • Can he play in a Power Man Blocking Scheme?
  • Could improve leverage in the trenches

Overall

There hasn't been an offensive lineman the caliber of Matt Kalil to come out since Jake Long in 2008. Tyron Smith was the first OT taken in last year's draft and he had to play RT in college because Kalil was on the same team. Matt Kalil has everything an NFL team would want out of a Left Tackle prospect. He has the ideal size, and long arms needed to succeed at the NFL level. Kalil is also a very good athlete which will help him against the speed rushers in the NFL. He can use his quick, agile feet to cut off rushers, and then use his superior upper body strength, and long arms to stop them dead in their tracks. The only thing that worries me about Kalil is that he is a little on the light side, and isn't a stout run blocker. He isn't going to overpower many defenders when run blocking. However, the NFL is a passing league now and LT's aren't necessary asked to lead the way for RB's as much as they used to. Their main focus is protecting the QB's blindside, and Kalil will be very good at that for a long time.

I love his control. He wastes almost no motion whatsoever. He reminds me a great deal of the Brownies own Joey T. This kid was a pro at 19. Someone (I'm thinking St. Louis, or Minnesota) is going to be extremely happy they got this guy.

Would he be able to play in right side as we got Joe Thomas if we chose to draft him. However likely this to happens. Does it make much different in playing American football compared to football as you don't need to use your best feet for kicking the ball ?

It'd be unlikely. As a general rule, tackles, especially tackles as skilled as Matt Kalil, tend to be left tackles. Right tackle tends to be a bit more of a brute force endeavor.

Could he play it? Probably. But it's a bit like hiring a surgeon to work in a butcher shop. For one, it's a waste I talent. And... He may actually lack the physical capacity to do the job well.

What about sliding him to left guard?

I suppose it's conceivable. But I wouldn't do it, for a couple of reasons.

1.) you don't take a top of the line LT prospect and make him a guard.
2.) You don't draft Guards with the #4 overall pick.

I just wanted to know it was possible, I have no clue when it comes to X's and O's. I agree, I wouldn't even dream of drafting Kalil. It just wouldn't make any sense.
