Wow, Suck It, Joe Torre
So the Dodgers are ten games out of first place and losing by four runs in the eighth inning in San Diego. Time for a feel-good story-- to pinch-hit, he sends out John Lindsey, who is 33 years old and has spent 15 years in the minors. It's going to be his major league debut. Who cares if he strikes out? It's cool just to see a lifer finally get his "Moonlight" Graham moment.
When he's finally up, the Padres make a pitching change and bring in a right-hander. Lindsey bats right. But obviously Torre wouldn't be a big enough tool to pull the guy, right?
Wrong. In comes the right-hander, out comes John Lindsey and in comes Andre Ethier who, batting from the left side, promptly grounds into an inning-ending double play. I tried to find that clip from "Homer at the Bat" where Mr. Burns explains to Daryl Strawberry that it's just playing the statistics to take him out and replace him with Homer, but alas, I could not. Suffice it to say that even though I've always liked him, for tonight anyway Torre can, indeed, suck it.
