A QB Holmgren could trade for: Hunter Cantwell

Posted 07-13-2010 at 01:16 PM by Alo

We've discussed Holmgren's proclivity for bringing in a young QB via trade and turning him into a solid pro.

Apparently, one of the guys we mentioned, Hunter Cantwell, is turning into a very intriguing option.

Quote:
In the past two years, Hunter Cantwell went from prospect to suspect to a guy with a firmer grip on an NFL job than most realize.

All it took was forgetting, then re-learning, how to throw a football.

Cantwell, the former Louisville quarterback who spent 2009 on the Panthers' practice squad, has re-learned the subtle mechanics of the position. And with that, he's put himself in place to compete for a job that would belie his undrafted status.

The Panthers - a team that has long preferred quarterbacks searched for and discovered to ones bestowed - see in Cantwell a nearly tailor-made physical package for their play-action deep passing game, with the kind of humble background that has him prepared for the work ahead.

[...]

His Christmas Eve promotion to the 53-man roster was made possible by Delhomme's broken finger, but coaches have been long been enthused about what he could do.

They rave about his poise, his humility, but most of all, his arm.

"Could throw a strawberry through a locomotive," quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer said with a laugh when asked of Cantwell's strength.

Former Panthers quarterback Jeff Lewis, who was on the coaching staff at Louisville when Cantwell was there, likewise marveled at the physical gifts.

"It's a complete cannon," Lewis said. "His first year, he walks out of the locker room, and here's this big ol' country boy with no shoes on, and he can throw the ball the length of the field. I played in the NFL for six years, and I couldn't do what he could do in two throws."
Cantwell definitely is a guy to watch this pre-season. With Moore and/or Clausen seemingly the future in Carolina, Cantwell is the kind of guy who could be available on the trade market next spring.
