Keep in mind that old white people were yelling racist epitaphs at black congressmen after some of Palin's more incendiary remarks (don't retreat, reload). Rocks were thrown through windows. Racist and disrespectful signs were waved with a little more swagger.

Purportedly it was about health care reform, something they didn't really understand enough to know it wasn't going to hurt them at all. But it was really about something much bigger. It was permission.
