Green Bay (with Ron Wolf): 1992, Ty Detmer 1993, Mark Brunell 1995, Jay Barker 1996, Kyle Wachholtz 1997, Ronnie McAda 1998, Matt Hasselbeck Brunell and Hasselbeck made Wolf/Holmgren's reputation for finding and developing QBs. Detmer, Barker, Wachholtz, and McAda don't get talked about much. Seattle (as GM/Coach) 1999, Brock Huard 2001, Josh Booty 2002, Jeff Kelly 2003, Seneca Wallace 2005, David Greene No Brunells or Hasselbecks here, when Holmgren had complete control. Wallace has been a decent spot starter but mostly a backup. None of the others have done anything at all. Holmgren's last drafted QB was David Greene, a third rounder from a prominent program. Of these 11, 2 went on to be long-term starters. Neither won a Super Bowl or is headed to the HOF... but they had good careers. Holmgren taught Steve Young to be an NFL quarterback, perhaps his greatest achievement. Montana was Walsh's prodigy. Holmgrean also harnessed a couple hotheads in Favre and Hasselbeck. Basically, we're hoping McCoy is more like the Big Two... then the Negligible Nine. NOTE: Why was there a QB named GILBRIN on a bunch of lists? Where'd he go? |

Well, you are cherry picking and spinning as usual. Not every drafted QB turns out wonderfully, and not every 1st round QB becomes an all-star. Sometimes undrafted players make it big. It means nothing. In Green Bay he had Favre, so never really had to concentrate on training a backup. In Seattle it was much the same situation with Hasselback, so it's not shock that the QBs he drafted didn't become all-pro players. Will McCoy become a starting QB? I sure hope so, but no statistics or inferrence can prove this before he ever takes snaps in the NFL, which if all goes according to plan, will not be until next season at the earliest. What point exactly are you trying to make by reposting this list for the 500th time? |

What some people's point is that we're a little more comfortable with that than we should have been with Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel developing Charlie Frye.

1. It's not cherry picking when you provide a complete list. In fact... this is kind of the polar opposite of "cherry picking." In a dictionary, this would be the antonym. 2. I've never posted this list. Never. 3. My purpose is that we don't confuse Holmgren's ability to work with and develop QBs (pretty undeniable) with his draft acumen (often slagged). 4. Indirectly, I'm also pointing out that not every quarterback who plays under Holmgren gets touched by his magic Big Show wand. Really, only 2 of 11 got the fairy dust. |

He paid a bag of chips and a trip for Romeo to arby's for him. Not exactly going out on a limb.

So what exactly is the point of the thread? Are you asserting that Holmgren is indeed NOT perfect when it comes to picking QB's? If that was your entire point, then we might need to file this thread in "D" for "Duh" Shep, we are all well aware that you don't like the McCoy pick. We get it, trust us. WE GET IT. I just don't understand why you feel the need to tear down the most established, respected and decorated football guy we've had running our team since we came back. And the sole reason this thread exists is because he did not pick the QB you wanted him to pick. So let's see, who do you think knows more about QB's. Shep or Mike Holmgren? I'm not trying to bust your balls too much fella, but you create these types of threads then look around bewildered when you get negative push back. It's a self fulfilling prophecy of sorts "Everybody attacks me all the time" then you go and throw pieces of raw meat out there like this thread to ensure exactly that happens. So to go back to the thread topic, yeah Mike took a lot of shots in the dark in later rounds on some guys that didn't rise to the top, but during his entire coaching career, how many seasons did Holmgren spend looking for a QB? Not many, if any at all. He always had one. Kinda hard to crack the starting lineup when you have a perennial starter in front of you that never goes down with injury.

Brock Huard... Josh Booty... whif, two swings and a miss right there. Huard was a huge bust. Ty Detmer was never a star calibre QB but he was a veteran and I was glad he was around to help out Tim Couch when we were re-booting the franchise. Of Holmgren's time with Seattle, Seneca was really the only QB who worked out to be worth a damn... It's pointless to speculate how this will paint McCoy's future, it's as much in his own hands as it is in Holmgren or anybody elses. The team is going to give McCoy the opportunities to develop and learn and its really up to Colt to make the most of them.
