Default What do we want from training camp/preseaon.

I have not started a post in many months now.. so here goes and I will address this by unit for the most part. I'll try to be brief as I hate reading superlong posts myself. I usually don't bother.

1. Health.. enough said.
2. Get all rookies signed and into camp on time... or at least by day 2.
3. Delhomme takes charge.. mentally and physically (thank goodness no qb
battle/drama)
4. McCoy..get a chance to see him in preseason and see what he has learned in mini camps and training camp.. I'm rooting for him.
5. We sort out the right side of the OL early on so they have most of training camp to work together. The line, possibly more than any unit on the field, needs time to work with the guy next to them. I think we have some good battles ahead for starting spot between Porkchop and Lauvao, Pashos hopefully nails down RT out of the gate as we know we are in trouble if he cannot take the spot from St. Clair.. Question.
Who backs up Mack at center?
6. WR's show consistency in running routes..playing..not thinking.. That they have Jake under center only helps them. Who nails down the 4,5,6 spot. I think we all know Steptoe is gone. I am most excited to see how far these guys have come.
7. TE..not too worried here with Watson. The battle for the backup spots will be interesting between Moore, Smith, and Royal.. Do we keep all 4? Possibly, if we plan on running a lot of double TE.
8. RB. Definately upgraded across the board bringing in Hillis, who can do it all; and Hardesty. I would personally like to see Hardesty nail down the starting job as Harrison can be scary good as a change of pace guy. If Harrison can nail down the starting job. more power to him. If he earns it..I'm behind him all the way. Vickers is becoming a lead blocking beast.. The real battle will be between Jennings and Davis
for that final roster spot. I am rooting for Davis as Jennings is just an average plowhorse. Davis.. I need to see more, but seems like he has more to bring to the table in playmaking ablity.

9. DL. IMO (no mystery here) I believe the weak spot on the team. What I hope for is that some time working together will improve the work as a unit. Some young guys can contribute more and this unit at least becomes serviceable. Talent is what it is. I'm not worried about the suspensions.. It gives young guys a chance to play. 1-2
games will not make the difference in us going to the playoffs this year (not happening)
10. LB's.. WOW.. huge battles here for starting jobs. Pretty much everything is up for grabs. I think we got better across the board..but still not hugely talented. But if they get a good unit together I think these guys can play at a high level and make a huge difference. I just hope Mangini does not fool aroud too long choosing who will play where
11. Secondary.. Safety battles will be interesting. Can they cover is the looming question? No doubt we should be more stout in the run game. DB's.. again we have improved.. Brown and Wright will start the season.. Hayden needs to get up to speed. Bmac needs to put a subpar year behind him, and continut to improve. This can be a really, really!!!! good unit.. I think we finally have enough talent to clamp
down on the 4-5 reciever sets we will see all year. Who starts is not as critical as everyone playing together well as a unit.
12. Special teams.. Keep on truckin!

Preaseason.. Packers, Rams, Lions, Bears. Wish we had a better quality opponent in week 3 than the lions. I am most interested in that first quarter against the Bears in game 4 when the starters will go the first quarter...
Then its the Buccaneers and Chiefs to start the season with 2 winnable games and time to grow before we play Balt. in week 3..

Go Browns!!

RB and defensive backfield will be the most intense position battles in camp.
Starter at QB named quickly.
Our D-line is a huge question mark.

I had said in another post that what I see happening so far is building a stronger more aggressive defense and run stuffing the ball down peoples throat on offense until we finally get our QB of the future.

COACHING,
I want to see a more disciplined well executed offense that doesn't look like a high school team where even diehard knows what were calling!

Mangini,
Free water in every hotel room for players this preseason!

Camp: Players to Watch

RB Jerome Harrison

By The Sports Xchange
Posted Jul 22, 2010

The Sports Xchange looks at three players to keep an eye on as camp begins...

Players to watch in the Browns upcoming training camp...

--Running back Jerome Harrison: Harrison had the misfortune as a rookie in 2006 to play behind Reuben Droughns, who rushed for 1,232 yards in 2005. Then in 2007,'08 and most of 2009 Harrison was stuck behind Jamal Lewis. When Harrison did get his chance at the end of last season with Lewis on injured reserve he made the most of it.

The Browns won their last four games, and the main reason was Harrison rushed for 561 yards over his last three. Now he is out to prove his outburst wasn't a fluke, and by extension show he deserves more than the one-year tender he was forced to sign at the deadline last month. His challenge in training camp will come from rookie Montario Hardesty. The other running backs won't be a major factor.

--Quarterback Jake Delhomme: At least the Browns knew what they had in quarterbacks Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn -- two guys with contrasting personalities and problems throwing the ball accurately. With Delhomme they are not sure about his mechanics.

He threw eight touchdown passes and 18 interceptions in 2009 with Carolina one year after guiding the Panthers to the NFC championship. A new start in Cleveland seems to have benefitted Delhomme. He has shown leadership qualities and his teammates are willing to follow. The Browns need that leadership from their quarterback; Quinn never connected with his teammates in his three seasons in Cleveland.

More in question than his leadership is Delhomme's ability to throw the ball accurately, which he did before he hit the major dip in the road last season. If minicamp is an indication of what to expect, Delhomme is back on track. It is worth noting Coach Eric Mangini wants to see Delhomme and Seneca Wallace perform in pads before declaring a starter.

--Cornerback Eric Wright: The 2007 second-round draft choice from Las Vegas has been a starter since his rookie year, but he could find himself the odd man out this summer with the addition of veteran
Sheldon Brown and rookie first-round draft pick Joe Haden. Wright has adequate cover skills for a left corner, but he can be a liability in run support. The Browns need a cornerback willing to stick his shoulder into the ball carrier. Haden had a reputation of playing well on run defense at Florida and Brown earned that reputation with the Eagles.

Hot seat: The Browns sent a message to starting safety Abe Elam when they tendered him a one-year contract worth second-round compensation and then took two safeties in the draft -- T.J. Ward and Larry Asante. Elam wants a multi-year deal. He has to prove he's worth it.

BROWNS NOTES

--Milt Morin, a Browns tight end from 1966-75, passed away on July 9, one week before he was to be inducted into the college football Hall of Fame. Morin, a star at the University of Massachusetts, died of an apparent heart attack.
Morin caught 271 passes for 4,208 yards with the Browns. He made the Pro Bowl in 1968, '69 and '72.

--Defensive lineman Shaun Rogers has avoided jail time for having a loaded handgun in his carry-on bag at Cleveland Hopkins Airport on April 1. Instead, he is entering a 12-month diversion program. He must take a 10-hour weapons course and perform 40 hours of community service. Rogers still faces possible suspension by Commissioner Roger Goodell.

I'm looking for competition (with no injuries). I'm excited about the secondary battles, TE & WR progression, and the RBs.

I want CONSISTENT QB play. Not spectacular. Consistent, ball control offensive movement.

The biggest things I want to see in camp are (in no particular order):

  • I want to see how the Cyclone Package will work out. From what I've read the coaches don't really know what to do with Cribbs and Wallace yet, although they like the possibilities.
  • I want to know which rookies will be playing for us this year. All 3 of our secondary rooks could see play time. Hardesty will be in rotation at least, no doubt.
  • Underdogs: I want to see how we will use Evan Moore, Peyton Hillis, and James Davis, if at all. I really like all of these guys and most often people forget about them. Hillis is a dynamic and talented player who can block, run and catch well. Davis showed flashes of talent before he was put on IR. Moore looked great last year. Was it just a fluke?
  • Will MoMass and Robo continue to improve? I keep hoping they can grow into respectable WRs.... They're still 2 young guys on a roster full of unproven talent.
  • How much can Jake Delhomme rebound after last year? Kurt Warner was released by the Rams after unsatisfactory performance before becoming an elite QB (again) for the Cards. Will Jake rise from the ashes like a phoenix? Or is he just burnt out?

1. Ochostinko and Ward life-flighted to the hospital after smashed between our new safeties.
2. Rapelessburger carted off the field after the ball was stuffed up his ass sideways as "payback" both games.
3. Maturation of or receivers.
4. Stop the run.
5. See our secondary see more picks than a room full of kindergarten noses.
