I like all the Gocong love. I think he is learning the 3-4 ILB ropes well (and quickly). I like what I'm seeing from Ward, Gocong, Roth, Rubin, and Haden on D. I like what I'm seeing from Moore, Lauvao, MoMass, and Robo on O. However, my two guys are Benard and Hillis. I think Benard is really working hard to take over a starting spot and his technique looks improved everyday. Add in his speed/burst and motor...he could be special. Hillis is a guy that brings the physical aspect that we need out of the backfield as a RB/FB and in the flat. He may have a nice role that is not heavy in one area but spread out and versatile while bringing some energy. I picture the pressure getting to Delhomme and him hitting Hillis in space only to run full force at the secondary...ouch!

If I had to wish like hell for a breakout... it would be Benard. If he could be a pass rusher, we'd be set at LB (Benard, Gocong, Fujita/Jackson, Roth) for a while. Then I'd say next year's draft is mostly about some youth at DE and a long-term QB. |

As far as rooks go i see Ward, Haden and Lauvao impacting the team immediately upon being put in.. As far as vets go i see gocong, benard, brown and eric wright standing out with wright being my choice as the guy who is going to rise to a whole new level and flourish under ryans system.. With gocong and benard answering the call in the front 7...

I'd sure like to see someone like Robinson/Sanford, Schaefering, or Geathers step into a solid backup role. I like what I see from Schaefering but isn't consistent enough and Geathers is a long term project...

On defense, I already trust the skills I see Roth consistently display so I HAVE to say Marcus Benard taking the second step Wimbley was never able to take is critical. I've ALWAYS felt that if we bring heat from the front 7 - our secondary will get the goodies they got back in 2001 when we had a Pro Bowl pass rusher off the edge. If/when we can bring it from either side (when Ryan fiddles with his dad's 46) - We can see a Wilkber Marshall and Otis Wilson type of gettign to the QBs. Okay, we're actually trying to make Benard more like Richard Dent from that D; but that might be a little high on the expectation front from a 2nd year undrafted player. We're gonna use some wrinkles of that 46 - think we've already seen that. I'm just not sure we're gonna have the same assignments inside - because Buddy LOVED the inside push from Fridge and Hampton. That didn't seem like 2 gap but it swallowed 3 blockers ALL the time. - Tom F.

I hear ya on Roth but the reason I chose him isn't so much for performance as much as leadership. We are long overdue for our anchor and it's there for the taking and I want to see someone step up and say it's his. I chose Robo because I want to see him succeed and have my fingers crossed because his doing well gives us so much more buying power next draft.
