Marc Bulger
It may have just been a try out then.

I think the notion that this game matters for McCoy isn't seen as crazy out in the world:

Big game on tap for Browns rookies Hardesty and McCoy

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 2, 2010 2:38 PM ET
Browns running back Montario Hardesty earned major kudos all offseason from the team's coaching staff, with resulting expectations that Hardesty would soon grow into the feature back role on the team.

But the rookie second round pick twisted his knee before training camp started and didn't return to practice until this week. He's expected to play Thursday night, and a solid showing could help him cement a significant role in Week One.

The Browns appear to have strong depth in their backfield. Former Broncos fan favorite Peyton Hillis has carved out a role, and Jerome Harrison probably will get the most touches in Week One.

Thursday also marks a big test for Colt McCoy. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports McCoy will make the final roster and play two quarters on Thursday. It's McCoy's last chance to show he's not in over his head as a pro quarterback.

Rumor has it that Colt McCoy is not going to play this season for the Cleveland Browns.

My bartender told me so.

I'll drink to that...

As Flugel said in another thread, it's a very good idea to keep an eye on the top QB prospects this fall. And that means watching more than a game or two, which is too small a sample size to get a feel for a guy's game.
100% agree. And Holmgren could draft a true franchise QB and keep McCoy next year.

There's a million different scenarios we could speculate on. which is exactly the point. While speculation is fun. When you start to make statements about how the 4th pre-season game of a 3rd round prospect QB is going to make or break him, it's getting beyond speculation.

Hold on, crafter of strawmen! Nobody said the phrase "make or break." Several have argued that it's an important game for McCoy, and I think that's true. It's probably the last time he'll play against a different colored jersey before the 2011 draft.

All he'll do is run the scout team between now and next April. When the brass discusses whether or not to draft Ponder at 15, they'll definitely be discussing tonight's game, the three that preceded it, and the scrimmage. It's what they have to go on.

Come one shep can you not see how Paragraph two contradicts Paragraph one here?

How can it not be make or break if aleady you're predicting that decsions that are 7 months away are going to be based mostly on tonight? Those are some pretty slim hairs you are splitting my friend.

And as Alo said, I don't think McCoys play tonight will affect that decision at all if they think Ponder has the ability to be a true franchise QB.

I think between now and next April CLE FO will likely be talking more about what, if any growth, McCoy shows while running the scout team (i.e. how far he has grown from day one to end of the season) than they will be talking about his first few pre-season game, which occur within his first few months of being on an NFL team. It goes back to my previous comparison, if FO went by what a player, especially a QB, did in a few snaps in preseason games, while not getting reps in practice, GB would have been drafting a QB right after Rodgers rookie year (and you could pick a slew of guys doing well or not well, pro-bowlers and hall of famers). Doesn't mean McCoy will be the real deal. It is just these preseason games aren't the only judgement and they aren't likely to carry the heaviest weight when CLE makes judgement 9 months from now..

It's tough to judge a guy who's strengths aren't really his eye-popping physical tools (arm) unless he's in a game running your offense against another team. Sounds like McCoy was solid in the first half, very efficient, but still playing it safe.

I think that's something to build on.

"Shep" (just another guy on a message board) has an opinion.:
"I was not a huge Colt McCoy fan going into the draft. I thought the Browns should take Clausen.
When they passed on him at 38, I literally crapped myself and threw up at the same time."
