Default The Browns 53 man roster next week?

With yesterday's announcements of cuts by NFL teams to get down to the 53 man roster limit there were some suprises by the Browns which leads to more specualation of what is to come.

With only 3 CB's currently on the roster and 12 LB's and few quality back-ups on the OL the Browns will be scanning the waiver wire to look for quality replacements. Which LB's will be cut? Do the Browns cut Bowens to bring in a quality veteran CB like Dre' Bly? LB Alex Hall just got cut by the Giants, do you favor resigning him over one of the current LB's on the roster? What about C Justin Hartwig from the Steelers? Could he be signed on the cheap to be a back-up C/G? Do the Browns sign a veteran WR who still has skills but just got cut lick Michael Clayton? Do the Browns add a vet RB like JJ Arrington or Ladell Betts?

Decisions, decisions, what will it be?

Cleveland Browns make cuts and set roster . . . which is sure to change

Published: Saturday, September 04, 2010, 11:19 PM Updated: Saturday, September 04, 2010, 11:29 PM

Tony Grossi, The Plain Dealer

BEREA, Ohio — It took the Browns until well past 9 p.m. 'Saturday to announce how they got to the league limit of 53 players. But it's only a temporary roster and it's sure to change in the next couple days.

Need a clue? They kept three cornerbacks and 12 linebackers.

Sheldon Brown, Eric Wright and rookie Joe Haden may be good, but they're obviously going to need somebody to back them up.

Fourth-year cornerback Brandon McDonald, who started 27 of 48 career games, was the biggest name of 15 players cut Saturday.
Either the Browns didn't have the stomach to whittle down their bloated linebacker roster or they are working on some transactions in the days ahead.

Veterans David Bowens and Eric Barton remain on the roster along with second-year linebackers David Veikune and Kaluka Maiava.

D'Qwell Jackson, who is nursing a partially torn pectoral muscle and whose availability is uncertain, remains on the active list. And, in a mild surprise, second-year linebacker Titus Brown is still part of the group.

Other than those two position groupings, there were no major surprises.
Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy was kept. Brett Ratliff was not.

In all, six of Tom Heckert's eight picks in his first Browns draft made the team. That includes running back Montario Hardesty, who Friday was put on season-ending injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The only draft choices cut were safety Larry Asante (fifth round) and defensive lineman Clifton Geathers (sixth). They are candidates to rejoin the team's practice squad after they pass through waivers by midday today.

Heckert chose to wait to announce the roster moves more than three hours after they were filed with the NFL office because he did not want to give other teams a jump on identifying potential waiver claims. The Browns, in fact, were one of the last teams to publicly announce their moves.

The current roster includes several players like Jackson whose availability is uncertain.

Nose tackle Shaun Rogers was activated off the physically unable to perform list. Rogers has not practiced with the team this year after having off-season surgery, believed to be on a broken ankle. The Browns have never confirmed where on his body the surgery took place.

Also, offensive tackle John St. Clair missed the last two preseason games and several practices for undisclosed personal reasons, and offensive guard Floyd Womack has been out for weeks after having a procedure on a knee. Another uncertainty is safety and special teams ace Nick Sorensen, who has been out with a concussion suffered in the Detroit game Aug. 28.

Other nuances of the current roster:

The Browns kept four tight ends -- Benjamin Watson, Evan Moore, Robert Royal and Alex Smith. And they kept four running backs -- Jerome Harrison, James Davis, Lawrence Vickers and Peyton Hills.

Billy Yates is the only healthy backup guard.

Fourteen of the 53 players were not on the team's active roster or injury list at the conclusion of the 2009 season.

Besides McDonald, the most notable deletions among the veterans were Ratliff, running back Chris Jennings and receiver Bobby Engram.

Ratliff, who co-authored the Gatorade dunking of coach Eric Mangini in the 2009 finale, made plays to set up game-winning field goals in the exhibition victories over Green Bay and Chicago. But his rating in the preseason was only 46.2 and he was intercepted twice with no touchdown passes.

Jennings had a small window to make the team through the injury to Hardesty, but Davis' preseason-ending performance slammed it shut. Jennings, who scored the first rushing touchdown of the season last year in the win over Pittsburgh, rushed 12 times for 27 yards in the preseason.

Engram joined the squad late, just prior to training camp, at the behest of his former coach in Seattle, Browns President Mike Holmgren. Engram, 37, and in his 15th NFL year, led the Browns with six catches in the last preseason game. He had nine overall -- tied with Hillis for the lead in four practice games -- for 83 yards.

Heckert: "We Kept the Best 53"

WR Carlton Mitchell

OBR Browns Reporter

Browns GM Tom Heckert answered questions on the team's cuts on Sunday afternoon. Fred Greetham attended the conference call and offers this report...

BEREA, Ohio—Browns General Manager answered questions for 25 minutes via conference call about the process to determine the final 53-man roster on Sunday afternoon.

“We kept the best 53 we needed to get ready for Tampa,” Heckert said. “We’ll have to wait and see, but we think were improved. We really do.”

Heckert said the roster will most likely have some adjustments to it as players claimed or brought in are evaluated.

“There will be some claims and another wave of cuts Sunday,” Heckert said.

Abe Elam posted on his twitter account that defensive back Quincy Butler was joining the Browns.

“He’s a guy we’ve contacted,” he said. But we haven’t done anything.”
Heckert answered various questions about the upcoming season and players on the roster:

Q: What are your expectations for this season?
Heckert: “I think we’re going to compete. We said when we got here that we were not going to be rebuilding. Our goal is to compete this year. That’s our goal.”

Q: What are your thoughts on Jake Delhomme?
Heckert: “Jake has had a great preseason. We said when we signed him, but not everybody believed it, that he was a good quarterback. He’s been a great team leader and has performed well.”

Q: What about keeping 12 linebackers?
Heckert: “D’Qwell (Jackson) is a part of it and he probably won’t be ready for the first couple of games. We’re excited he’ll be back sooner than later.”

Q: When do expect Shaun Rogers to play?
Heckert: “We think he’s going to be ready to play (this week). We’ll see how he practices. Right now, I don’t think it’s a concern.”

Q: With Ahytba Rubin playing well, do you see Rogers playing end?
Heckert: “That’s a question for Eric (Mangini). Rubin has done a great job and that gives us flexibility adding in a guy like Shaun.”

Q: Are you satisfied with the pressure on the quarterback in the preseason?
Heckert: “We do have to get pressure on the quarterback and with Shaun coming back, that will help us.”

Q: In retrospect, was it a mistake to draft Montario Hardesty with his injury history?
Heckert: “Obviously, he tore his ACL. Was it riskier drafting him rather than a guy who didn’t have a history? We felt comfortable when we took him he was going to be OK.”

Q: Do you know of any running backs to come back from two ACL surgeries and be successful?
Heckert: “I’m sure everybody says this, but the doctors have said there is no reason the player can’t come back from this. We had Correll Buckhalter who came back and had two ACLs. We’re confident he’ll be back.”

Q: Did he have surgery yet and in retrospect, do you wish he wouldn’t have played in the final preseason game?
Heckert: “No, he didn’t have surgery yet. We had no question about playing him. Montario wanted to play.”

Q: Why did David Bowens think he was not going to make the team?
Heckert: “I can see where David is coming from. He didn’t play much, but to waste a lot of reps on David wasn’t needed. He does bring leadership, and everything you want a player to bring to a team. In the end, it’s all performance based.”

Q: How did the process go with you Eric and Mike Holmgren?
Heckert: “It went well. Eric and I talk every day. I meet with him every day. Eric, me and Mike met and just talked it out. It wasn’t a matter of someone being my guy or his guy. We just talk it out. It’s a difficult time for all of us. We all struggled with guys we let go. We talk all the time. We went through the whole process.”

Q: What about the uncertainty on the right side of the offensive line?
Heckert: “I don’t think there is uncertainty. A couple guys had to miss time for personal reasons. Shawn (Lauvao) played well and Tony (Pashos) played well when he was in there. I think we’ll be ok.”

Q: Are you looking at bringing in a veteran wide receiver?
Heckert: “We like the guys we have and we throw Carlton (Mitchell) in there, who we think has a good up side. We’re good with the guys we have.”

Q: What are your thoughts on Sheldon Brown after seeing him in the preseason?
Heckert: “I think he has a lot left. He’s a good football player.”

Q: Do you still feel you have depth at running back?
Heckert: “There’s no question with the play of Peyton (Hillis) and James (Davis), too. Peyton is a proven back. We have three capable backs.”

Q: Are you concerned only having three cornerbacks on the roster right now?
Heckert: “We think we have four because we have Mike Adams, who can play both cornerback and safety.”

Q: Why didn’t fifth-round pick Larry Asante make the team?
Heckert: “We’ll see what happens with Larry. I think he’s going to be a good player. Hopefully, we can get him on the practice squad.”

Q: Do you expect Nick Sorenson to be able to play soon?
Heckert: “We’ll see what the doctors say, but I don’t think it will be long time.”

Only 3 CB's on the roster is madness. We have to be thinking waiver wire for sure, but I am thinking more likely a trade.

I'm not disagreeing with you that we may bring in another DB.

But if you read Heckert's interview, he says that they are thinking they have 4 CB's on the roster, because Mike Adams can back up both CB and Safety.

I expect at least one if not more changes before game 1. I can see them cutting 1 LB for DB or OL help and then cutting another LB once DQJ is ready to play for more help at either OL or DB.

Or a TE. Do we really need Alex Smith on the roster? I'm pretty perplexed at cuttig BMac. He was not a tackler but I didn't think he was such a liability that he needed cut. But I'm sure that looked for trade partners and thought it was best to cut him.

Adams is not a good CB. He is a baller but not what I'd consider 4th CB material. But when you consider he will play N and D defenses -- we'll see I guess.

I didn't like the B-Mac cut and I don't like starting Barton.

I don't like cutting B-mac, even with his hot n' cold ass. Also not a fan of cutting Chris Jennings, especially with Hardesty out for the season.
