i'm likely never going to change my stance on veikune: the coaching staff ruined his chances by asking him to play the wrong position. DE to ILB doesn't work. DE to OLB can. S to OLB can. DE to DT can. 4-3 DT to 3-4 DE can.

What makes each of those work, though, is that the positions switched from and to have something in common. DE and ILB are completely unrelated, which is why this experiment was doomed from the start.
I don't completely agree with you. While it is definitely a bigger switch than the switches you said could work, the switch from DE to ILB HAS worked before. Also, if you are an intelligent, athletic, football player, you should be able to switch from any position to any position.

It's just that Veikune wasn't smart enough, athletic enough, or good enough of a football player to make the switch. My guess is, that the coaching staff determined he would make a horrible OLB, and thought his only shot was ILB.

Cut, Really?
Honestly when the pick was made were any of us thinking he'd make it?
I think we were all praying he'd make it, but it was another classic Browns "WTF were they THINKING?!" pick when it happened.
The only thing that was surprising was I thought he'd get in 2 seasons before getting the ax.

Oh man.... finally.

ManKok's draft was so sad its funny. But hey, we got Mack!

Unfortunately Heckert's first year here hasn't looked too good so far either.

We'll see how these last two drafts work out, but I wasn't crazy about either. Can't recall if either Mosley or Ratliff were part of the big trade, but they and Veikune are gone. Robiskie did nothing last year. Mack and Massoquoi did pretty well.

The loss of Hardesty really hurts this draft... and he was one of my very favorite picks. Assante got cut. It's up to Haden, Ward, and Lauvao now.

It doesn't seem like we've taken a star-less roster and filled it with impact players these past two offseasons. But things have an odd way of working out... so who knows?

I thought it was a pretty good pick. Perhaps a bit of a reach, but a good one.

The moment that I knew it was a bad pick was in TC when Mangini announced him as an ILB.

I don't get this post: We got a top 3 caliber center, 2 WR who project as 2's and a special teams demon in the 2nd day, plus a back with plenty of potential to contribute(which is plenty good) and you think the draft sucks? Don't forget about Benard either. He turns into a good starter, that is a major coo.

Not all draft picks turn out well and they will get cut. You need to reanalysis.

In terms of talent, the BE deal was more beneficial. The Browns have picked up Stucky,Lauvao and Trusnik for BE, a guy who wasn't coming back. Nice reinvestment. Guys with several more year in the tank.

If you have read any of Mangini's pressers, you will understand how desperate he was to trade down for Mack. I suspect the Jets were the only team interested into trading up for Sanchez and thus got a easy package from Mangini. Basically Mack and a 2nd rounder, plus Coleman and Elam, who could help the defensive transition. But in terms of talent, the former deal was better outside Heckert wasting a 5th.

At this point, I'm completely amazed Joe Thomas is still on the team.
