A few things, and I'll try to acknowledge not knowing my ass from a hole in the ground wherever it arises...

1. Football Insiders said that DQJ actually ranked very high on "effective tackles" in 2008, and Riceloft brought that stat in for us. Had to do with preventing first downs, runs of 3 yards and shorter, etc. He measured out very well.

2. It's my understanding that whatever the two ILB positions are called, DQJ is supposed to be the chase-and-tackle guy even more than the other Badass Motherfucker next to him (Bowens and Gocong both seem to fit, like Rey-Rey) who blows up guards and fullbacks, stacks things up.

3. On Gocong, Veg, I've read some things that Ryan and Mangini think it's perfect for him for two reasons: One, he plays well going forward but not backward (like in coverage)... and Ryan's defense really benefits from pressure up the middle. He has great explosion unlike any other candidates for the spot. He's a natural inside blitzer and hit some QBs in preseason (including Feeley).

4. Agreed on the DL. It was reported that Rubin was a much better friend to ILBs than Rogers, who shot gaps and left them exposed to blockers.

I want him back for two reasons: Eric and Barton. I think we're a much better team with Gocong and Jackson in the middle.
I want him back for only ONE reason, he is the quarterback of our defense. The combination of him coming back and Rogers should make worlds of difference. And it's not pre-season so Ryan will actually be able to scheme.

Rob Ryan has been able to scheme while in CLE and OAK. Yet he the teams he has been the DC for have a common theme, last place D's against the run and pass. The D needs to show significant improvement this year before I give Ryan and kudos

Yes they do have something in common, its they both had/have no talent.

Put Rob in for Rex in Baltimore and its Rob that has the Jets head coaching job right now.

Two more things about DQJ:

1. Mangini loves the shit out of him. If you think Mangini knows shit... you think a lot of DQJ. He raved on and on about him in last year's camp, said he's a Pro Bowl talent and leader of the defense.

2. The fact that in DQJ's absence a safety led the team in tackles? A definite endorsement of DQJ.

Rob Ryan had Nnamdi Asomugha, Derrick Burgess, Kirk Morrison, and DeAngelo Hall to work with in OAK. That's more than CLE.

And their defense was better than ours. But still only Asomugha is a pro bowler. 1 pro bowler on two teams. Exactly my point.

Hall was a pro bowler 2 straight years before going to the Raiders. Sapp has been apro bowler (was on that 2007 season). But pro bowl is a meaningless thing, imo. It's popularitiy contest. DA was a pro bowler, so that says it all. Morrison and Burgess are solid players.

In 2007 OAK D was worse than CLE in points allowed and rush yards (OAK was 31st). Same story and ranking in 2008. So their D was hardly better than CLEs then or now. It was the same.

Ryan's stats have always had a hard time keeping up with the notion that he's a great defensive coach. I'm with Masters on this... it's kind of an odd phenomenon. Maybe the family name?

#3!!!!! In my book thats pretty damn good.

At the end of the day the Raiders and the Browns have had the same caliber of talent. And its not good at all. Put him on as the defensive cordinator with the Jets and I guarantee you that its a top 5 defense. Rex Ryan has the defensive personell in New York and he had it with the Ravens. Thats the only difference. Get him some players and he will do good. No secret there. Cant make stallions out of donkeys.

Been saying that since he got here. His D always ranks pretty low. He had a lot of years in OAK to define and dictate what kind of DC he is, and a scheme shouldn't take 5 years. He never has impressed me. But - he is my DC so I will see how it goes.
