Al Davis has destroyed more coaches and assistant coaches through bad drafting, terrible trades, and meddling than any owner I can think of. And for Ryan to not only survive as long as he did, but to actually catch several teams eyes for being talented really says a lot about the guy.
His schemes are all that kept the Browns in games last year. We had zero talent and even less depth on D and he still got it done, especially down the stretch.
I think what we saw in preseason was the Browns doing what GOOD teams do...try out the new guys and new schemes so they know what works ON TOP OF the base package.
I really think the Browns D is going to surprise a lot of you, and a lot of teams, this year. |
Who are these other teams that Rob caught the eye of? He left OAK after he got passed up for the HC job in favor of Cable. There was some talent on that OAK D, as I have pointed to.
RAC's scheme kept the Browns in games. As I showed, CLE actually gave up less points per game when RAC was the HC and whom ever he had as his DC.
I am sure you are right in that the Browns were trying various things in preseason, like every other team (good or bad). Teams don't really game plan in the preseason. But I point out the stat you noted before, which was the % of plays CLE blitzed GB, yet they didn't so much as touch Rodgers, let alone sack him. It's been the case really in all the preseason games.
I hope you are right and the D surprises me. I want them to. I'd rather be concerned and wrong, then concerned and be correct w/ it.
