The AFCN has also featured some high-powered passing games and Pro Bowl quarterbacks (Palmer, Roethlisberger, and Flacco). I don't think the Ravens are stocking up on WRs coming off Flacco's breakout year so they can hand off over and over and over. I don't think Ocho and T.O. are going to be decoys.

I think the notion that cold weather teams don't throw a lot is really misleading. The Packers, Pats, and Giants all throw a ton.

Okay, and we get that passing is important.

But in the AFCN - Benson (ranked #2 in rushing) Rice (ranked #8 in rushing) and Mendenhall (ranked #16 in rushing) aren't decoys either. Not by a LONG shot and in fact they are the basis of those offenses, except where Pitt got away from it but are now making statements to re-commit to the running game.

You take Rice out of the Bal offense and they struggle about as much as if you took out Flacco. Rice fuels that engine, Flacco drives the car. Both are co-MVP's.

Bengals - 9th Rushing
Ravens - 5th Rushing

Both made the playoffs. When 2 of the top 10 rushing teams reside in your division, you need to run the ball and stop the run.

Why is this even a debate? How long have you been a Browns fan? LMAO. Crissakes.

Huh? I don't think I said that. Could you point that out to me so I could correct it?

That's how I feel Vegas. I support him, in that I want him to succeed and be great. But he's got to show me something before I believe he is good. Hoping and pulling for a guy is one thing, reality today is different.

#3!!!!! In my book thats pretty damn good.

At the end of the day the Raiders and the Browns have had the same caliber of talent. And its not good at all. Put him on as the defensive cordinator with the Jets and I guarantee you that its a top 5 defense. Rex Ryan has the defensive personell in New York and he had it with the Ravens. Thats the only difference. Get him some players and he will do good. No secret there. Cant make stallions out of donkeys.
Ram, that is only when sorting by total yards allowed. Like I said (and you can sort the stats you posted) his teams against the run and pts allowed were bottom of the NFL.

Al Davis has destroyed more coaches and assistant coaches through bad drafting, terrible trades, and meddling than any owner I can think of. And for Ryan to not only survive as long as he did, but to actually catch several teams eyes for being talented really says a lot about the guy.

His schemes are all that kept the Browns in games last year. We had zero talent and even less depth on D and he still got it done, especially down the stretch.

I think what we saw in preseason was the Browns doing what GOOD teams do...try out the new guys and new schemes so they know what works ON TOP OF the base package.

I really think the Browns D is going to surprise a lot of you, and a lot of teams, this year.
Who are these other teams that Rob caught the eye of? He left OAK after he got passed up for the HC job in favor of Cable. There was some talent on that OAK D, as I have pointed to.

RAC's scheme kept the Browns in games. As I showed, CLE actually gave up less points per game when RAC was the HC and whom ever he had as his DC.

I am sure you are right in that the Browns were trying various things in preseason, like every other team (good or bad). Teams don't really game plan in the preseason. But I point out the stat you noted before, which was the % of plays CLE blitzed GB, yet they didn't so much as touch Rodgers, let alone sack him. It's been the case really in all the preseason games.

I hope you are right and the D surprises me. I want them to. I'd rather be concerned and wrong, then concerned and be correct w/ it.

Dude, I know the feeling. Sort of defines my rocky romance with the Browns. I would love, love, love to be wrong about McCoy, for instance.

Wait. Hold on one second. What just happened. Did McCoy sneak into this thread? LOL. Shep you're insatiable dude.

Masters I agree. I'd much rather be wrong. Rob has good genes. But we'll see. We all learn more every year on the job and I know I NEVER stop learning in mine.

On another note - why did Denver dump Nolan?

This IS your Joey Harrington on Defense. Not the guy we thought he'd be in Cleveland and you still have you man crush....HE'S AVERAGE!!!! OR BELOW!

Same here. I learn something new just about every day.

I have wondered by DEN got rid of Nolan as well. Perhaps conflicts between him and McDaniels?

DQJ is still the guy I though he was and would be. If the expectation was for him to be Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis type of LB, I think the wrong expectation was set.

From what I recall yes. They were Philosophically different and so Nolan asked for a release and from there... Parcells and Sparano are very happy men because of it.
