Masters, I really don't know what you're seeing out there. It's easy to talk about how bad the D is but you don't seem to give ANY credit to the fact that there are at best 5 legit NFL starters out there for us (Roth, Fujita, Tuba, Haden, Ward) on D.
Again, for anyone who is down on this Browns team, consider you could be watching BUF, JAX, OAK or CAR who are SO MUCH WORSE than us, that it's sad. Heck, I could even make a case that we're better than DET and STL, despite their FAR superior offensive talent.
Again, let's be fair here: we are a talent-poor football team that has been in EVERY game this year. Not many teams have been as consistently competitive as ours.
I'm damn proud to be a Browns fan this year and that's saying something when you're 1-5. |
CLE didn't compete for 4 QTRs, they competed for 2 QTRs. In the 3rd QTR they allowed PIT to go 96 yards for a TD, along with getting out of being backed up to their own 8. By mid way 4th the game was completely out of reach down 21-3. That's not my definition of competing for 4 QTRs. That's competing for a half, just as they have done in 4 of 6 games.
I don't see HEART when you allow your guys to get leveled with head shots and do nothing. Heck, in watching the replay of the MoMass hit they let Harrison stand over MoMass and admire his work. My opinion of heart doesn't have guys not stepping in and getting that guy out of there and standing up for you teammate (also goes all the way back to the Suh body slam on Jake).
I give full agreement the roster still lacks players. Though your shorting the D Rubin and Brown, who are legit NFL starters. Don't know who Tuba is. But to your point that it lacks talent, then what are the coaches doing sending blitzes on 3rd and long when your secondary routinely gets exploited? What are you doing going with this all DBs and LBs in the redzone week after week when it's fooling no one? What are you doing blitzing constantly in the redzone? When you have the weaknesses CLE has, you have to try to protect against them, not allow teams to further exploit them. It also doesn't excuse poor tackling.
Only BUF and CAR are as bad as CLE (granted BUF may be worse). Though CAR has one major issue, which is QB. They actually have very solid running game and D. JAX is a .500 team right now. OAK has actually been in all by 1 or 2 games this season.
I completely disagree that CLE has been in every game. I get that they have been in it for one half of football in every game, but that's it. The third quarter rolls around and by the opponents first or 2nd drive in that QTR its game.
I am always proud to be a Browns fan. It doesn't mean I am going to polish up a bad football team and make them out to be more than they have been. There are certainly positives, mainly individual players (Hillis, Ward, Haden, and this past week Colt) though. Sure it's nice they aren't getting blown out every week (though I think this past weeks 28-10 is going to be the start of seeing scores like that until week 11, especially if they continue with the D game plan they are using), but I can show the exact same thing in 2006.
