No, I was taught to keep my head up as not to get a spinal injury from peewee on through high school.
Neither of my nephews were taught to keep their heads down.
My hs coach would make us run laps for hitting with our helmets whether it practice or game time.
Just this past week, I went to a hs game where a player speared another. The coach grabbed the offending player by the facemask, yelled at him for nearly a minute, then tossed his ass on the pine.
Spearing is illegal, and is not taught at any level around these parts.
For example, you drive to work every day on the same highway.
There is a posted speed limit of 50mph.
Everyone usually goes 70 instead because it's a straight shot and cops never are there to enforce the limit.
So one day, you're going 70 and you get pulled over for speeding.
So tell me, is it your fault for speeding or the cop's for enforcing the posted speed limit which usually isn't enforced but the police department decided it best to start enforcing because of a recent increase in accidents down it?
Spearing is illegal as per the rules, like it or not.
Problem is the rule just wasn't getting enforced.
So who is at fault?
The player who knows that spearing is illegal and decided to do it anyways or the big bad commissioner's office that decided to enforce the rule?
Ignorance is no excuse, it's your own damn fault.

Thank you so much FOS for enlightening us that the best and proper way to tackle is by squatting down and jumping into the oncoming player like a frog, and not to stay low hit with your shoulder and drive your feet through the man. If Harrison had hit properly and kept driving his feet, he would have actually hit Massaqui much harder than with his little leap frog technique.

I said this in another thread but it's worth repeating... the best athletes adapt and adjust. If your boy harrison can't do this then he must not be as good as you think he is. If he wants to prove how good he is he'll shut his mouth and continue to lay the hard hits within the confines of the rules.

Oh and go watch that video released by the nfl, clearly you haven't because you keep arguing they're taking "hard hits" out of the game, when they state hits only aimed at the neck and head of a defenseless player will be illegal.

I coach 6 and 7 year olds and from day one we teach them to keep their heads up and NEVER under ANY circumstance should they lower their head and hit with the top of the helmet. We jerk kids out of games that pull that shit.

It's not like this is something new. Spearing has been illegal for decades, it just so happens that the NFL has to crack down on this because some players are moving away from PROPER tackling to this chicken shit style of trying to end somebody's career and get on sportscenter.

Trust me, you can still snot lick somebody in a LEGAL way without leading with your helmet. I know, because I did it quite frequently as a player myself.

Gonna bring this back for a moment since Head Down Harrison might get fined again for his hit on Brees Sunday night. Watch the play--coming in and right before the hit the head goes down. Then on MNF a play stood out in the second offensive series for Texas. Shaub back to pass and Jerry Hughes is coming in hard and right before the hit the head does NOT go down but goes to the side for a legal, hard CLEAN hit about chest high. Not earth shattering but showed me some players can have the hard hit that some fans get excited for without going the spearing route. Hard legal hits happen all the time. This one just caught my eye.
