There was that report back in August that Holmgren was taking on Big Baby as a personal project. I wouldn't be surprised if some of his excellent play today was spurred on by the Walrus. I'd have to go back and re-watch the game to know for sure, but I think the coaching staff let Rogers play some one gap at that RDE spot. Instead of playing both sides of the o-lineman, he was shooting gaps and spilling the action to the outside. Maybe he was just freelancing, but the strategy would make a lot of sense. Though Rogers is a freak athlete for his size, I don't think he moves as well laterally as your typical 295 pound 3-4 end. As a result, it makes sense to let him use his quickness to get upfield; hopefully, he'll get more TFLs instead of having the bounce outside and gain a couple yards. |

Don't know about the Holmgren reference, if that was the case he should have been playing well all season. It's a really sad reality that this idiot won't go full steam every game. He has been hampered by injuries all year, although most seemed to discard those as bullshit. Maybe they were more real than most believed. Let's hope so!

Maybe that broken leg is finally better. He was getting a nice push today.. still seems to be out of position on runs.. but I'll take this guy when healthy, in our rotation, any time. We need all the healthy bodies we can get on the DL..especially a guy with some talent and experience...even if it is on a rotational basis.

I think we've been using Rogers extremely well so far this season. He's been hurt, and Solon makes an excellent point, he's a player that opposing teams plan for. One of the first players Holmgren mentioned talking to was Rogers and Holmgren said that the sum of their conversation was that he wanted more from Big Baby. We got it yesterday. I think we need to keep using our players that we have to their strengths to create things that our opponents may not necessarily expect. A lot of posters around here dog Rogers which really has always confused me. He's always been one of the better players on our D without a doubt.

Agreed that solon makes a good point about the tripple team and Alo about how they used him this week. And is it just me or did that defense game plan look similar to the one last year against the Steelers where we hit Big Ben alot? They had that "chaos" thing going on where guys where just wandering around pre-snap and then coming at them from all different directions. Last year against Pitt I think they did it because they felt the weather would hamper some of the running game, and this week they did it because they weren't affraid of NOs running game. But I don't think you can play that kind of Choas defense and letting Rogers shoot those gaps all the time against a team that runs the ball well. I think Rogers is still a vital part of this defense, whether he's told to occupy lineman which he probably doesn't like, or if there's a game plan like yesterday where they take his leash of and say "go get em big boy". Both gameplans have validity, and you can't just measure the sucess of one player based on stats and highlight reels.

And believe me when I tell you the difference in Rubin from season 1 to last year was night and day. Bryan Cox was always voted Team Captain by his teammates because of the way he competed every single play and how SMART he was. There's a reason coaches such as Shula, JJ, Parcells and BB wanted this guy. Specifically where Rubin played better via Cox was he stopped standing straight up at the snap and began playing with leverages that included his lower torso. This TEAM also learned that Bryan Cox wouldn't tolerate any crap from a hollow dome like Shaun Smith. When you think about 1 area alot of people were worried about in the off season - it was dline. This is an area of the team I think has been coached extremely well. They're a BIG reason our front 7 is much improved vrs the run and scoreboard control. As far as Shaun Rogers goes, he came from a 1 gap scheme/4 man line just like Corey Wiliams and Shaun Smith. Robaire played in both schemes (4-3 in TN and if he was with Texas before that it had to have been a 3-4). Teaching an old dog new tricks isn't always easy as the newspaper stories out of DC have educated us about the 100 million $ man not being the least bit excited to play 2 gap football up front. Even though alot of people hate giving Mangini credit for anything good, he was an All Conference Nose Tackle at Wesleyan College that leads his school in sacks to this day per season-high and career volume. It COULD be possible they put Rogers in the Center-Guard gap (as opposed to head-up) and allowed him to pinch in on many plays. It could ALSO be possible our DC uses some slant schemes up front toward wide-side or power. The BASE might be 2 gap but I'm sure there's some degree of flexibility within that has some 1 gappage considering how many 1 gappers we entered 2009 with. While it was NICE to see Rogers show up for a refreshing change, I need to see more of this before I can celebrate him. Last year, he showed up for the Cincy game and realized he exceeded his quota for sweating. I've been highly critical of Rogers because of the large commitment this franchise extended him vrs the exchange value received. I say this because of how IMPORTANT he was/is thought to be if he honors the dream salary extended his way. I have to admit when I see a guy sucking gas after 2 plays or he's got another nagging injury he won't suit up with - I'm not feeling how seriously he's taking his profession. I'm not disputing TALENT as much as I'm disputing how useful it's been to our cause. You play in a 3-4 at a spot that invites double teams - you HAVE to show for the season with some degree of muscular endurance. When the hands go on the hips after the first play of high intensity - guess what? That's not a motivated player from the offseason. His light switch on game day hasn't always turned on so I haven't always been turned on by him. I'd LOVE for that to change and I hope it does. - Tom F.

Don't get me wrong, I love what Rogers brings to the table as a DE, and he has the size to play nose in a 3-4. But... It's been pointed out time and time again, when Rogers plays nose on rushing downs he is still acting like a pass rusher, getting penetration when shoved off to the side as the runner blows by him for a big gain. It's this problem that makes most of cringe every time we see Rubin hit the pine for a breather and Rogers slide over to NT. It also made quite a few of us think we're better off without him. As a DE (on passing or running downs) or pass rushing NT he does great and is a force. And honestly our dline has looked much better with Rubin at nose, Rogers at DE. So I've got no problem with seeing Rogers out there, so long as he is at DE.

| Browns notebook: Rogers is picking it up By Steve Doerschuk CantonRep.com staff writer Posted Nov 05, 2010 @ 09:07 PM BEREA — Shaun Rogers has gone from 2008 Pro Bowler to 2007 Round 6 draft pick Ahtyba Rubin’s backup at nose tackle. Rogers had an awakening in the Browns’ win at New Orleans. Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan said Rogers’ pressure on Drew Brees was a key to the Browns’ stunning win at New Orleans. “I don’t know if we were confusing Drew Brees, but we were probably hurting him,” Ryan said. “When Shaun Rogers comes down on you four times, that hurts.” Team President Mike Holmgren suggested he was the Rogers of old in the win. “When he’s healthy,” Ryan said, “he’s a man among boys.” A few good laughs Preparations for the Patriots have been peppered with some good laughs about the Patriots days several Browns coaches shared with Eric Mangini. “Some funny stuff ... nothing I can really share,” Mangini said Friday. “It would make a good headline.” The mood among coaches and players is upbeat. Somebody asked linebacker David Bowens if his two pick-sixes at New Orleans were the result of being a next-seat locker neighbor of wide receiver Brian Robiskie. Robiskie butted in: “No. If he’d been learning, he would have had better end zone celebrations.” Extra points • Ryan spent four years as Belichick’s linebackers coach in New England, learning plenty but not growing especially close. “We’re different,” Ryan said. “I never hung out or drank beers with him or anything, but I always admired him.” • Tom Brady has the sixth-best career passer rating in NFL history, 93.5. The top five — Steve Young, 96.8; Philip Rivers, 96.3; Peyton Manning, 95.5; Tony Romo, 95.5; and Kurt Warner, 93.7. Tony Romo? • It took Brady 131 starts to reach 100 wins, making him the fastest passer in NFL history to get there. No. 2? Joe Montana did it in 139 games.
