Default Mangini safe for season...

I still don't think Holmgren really wants to coach again...at least I hope he doesn't.

Let's put it this way...

We all acknowledge that the Browns lack talent in several key areas (WR, DE, RT, etc)....and we can all agree that the multiple injuries at QB have been less than ideal for the team.

With all that...the have been in every game and are still looking like they are not only getting better, but actually have a future.

You take that into consideration when you decide what to do with a coach...and I think that EM has more than earned the respect of the players, and much of the league with the job he has done here. And I think MH will have little to decide unless EM just crash and burns in the second half of the season.

Now, as for Daboll....again, re-read the first two lines.

Lack of a true #1 deep threat at WR
Injuries to 2 of the 3 'adequate' receivers for 1.5 games (Cribbs/MoMass)
Lackluster performance by Harrison before jettisoning him
Injury to starting QB in 1st game
Injury to backup QB in 5th game (and re-injury to starter)
Start rookie 3rd rounder

In that, the Browns have still managed to put at least 14 on the board in 5/7 games...and got 10 against the Steelers (#1 scoring defense) and Falcons (#10 scoring defense).

They Browns have played the following defenses
#1 Steelers
#7 Ravens
#8 Saints
#10 Falcons

So, overall, not that bad. Give the guy a playmaker or 2 and we may see someting.

The last thing the Browns need is Holmgren to take over as coach next year while still maintaining his role as team president. Talk about having too much on your plate - like Mangini last year.

Mangini has been here for 2 years and 2 out of 2 years we have had talk about him losing his job. Geez, when will we decide to let someone come in here and put a program together with out tearing it apart. Out of all the coaches we have had in 10 years I have seen the most effort from a Mangini led team. I firmly believe it would be a mistake to fire Mangini after 2 years. Now Daboll on the other hand, I have zero faith in.

Holmgren: 'Bottom Line Is Wins'

By Fred Greetham

Browns president Mike Holmgren addressed the media Tuesday in Berea.

BEREA, Ohio — For the first time since training camp, Browns president Mike Holmgren spoke to the media in addressing a variety of topics. The Browns entered the bye week at 2-5, one game better than a year ago, when the team started 1-6.

“We’re an improved, better team,” Holmgren said. “But, the bottom line is about wins.”

Here’s a highlight of topics covered (check back for more detailed information later or listen to the OBR radio show from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday on KNR2 am1540 or listen to the podcast).

Q: Will Colt McCoy be the starter?
Holmgren: “Before anyone anoints him, he has more to prove. That’s a coaching decision and Eric and his staff will make that. If he goes back to the bench, he has that experience in the bank.”

Q: Will there be a consensus among yourself, Tom Heckert and the coaching staff?
Holmgren: “Given how we’ve worked so far, I don’t anticipate it being a problem.”

Q: How will you evaluate Eric Mangini?
Holmgren: “He’ll be evaluated at the end of the season. There’s more to it than wins and losses. It’s too premature at this point.”

Q: What have you been most encouraged about?
Holmgren: “The most encouraging is we’ve been in most games and have had chances to win the games, but it’s almost discouraging because we lost those games. The effort and the competitiveness I like, but it hurts because we’ve lost.”

Q: Why are the wide receivers not as integrated into the offense?
Holmgren: “The system I grew up in (San Francisco with Bill Walsh). That was our scheme the way, we played offense. I think there’s an emphasis to work the middle of the field with the tight end here. We don’t throw as many balls here as we have in my background. The third thing is you have to look at the receivers and they don’t get as many opportunities.”

Q: Thoughts on Brian Daboll:
Holmgren: “This is a hard working group. My greatest challenge is what hat I’m wearing my coaching hat or president hat. This first year is hard for me to get used to the system.”

Q: Do you still want to coach?
Holmgren: “No, I’m doing OK. The challenge for this has been a challenge for me and I enjoy the challenge. I’d be less than honest if I didn’t say I get fire up at the games. The hard part is you’re watching the game and you’re right there. I have a phone but I’ve only used it once to check on an injury.”

Q: Do you have to see if Colt McCoy can play?
Holmgren: “We have to have that discussion and see if you’re doing it just for the future. We have to have that discussion once the other quarterbacks are ready.”

I'd be curious to see what dabolls play calling would be like if he had a#1 receiver. Anyone saying it would not make a big difference in what he calls.. is not being honest with themself and just a Daboll hater... now I am not saying Daball is good ,great, or anything like that, as I have not been happy either.. but it's a FACT.. a real #1 would change what he's doing.. it would have to. is that enough to save him.. i doubt it

Sounds like he's just getting tired of wearing suits to work to me, wants to chill in his office in track pants and a wifebeater.

LOL...thanks for posting that other article Bernie! Sure does make it a lot more interesting to hear another journalists take on the interview.

I don't want Holmgren to coach. Mostly because I can't see it being a long term situation...and then we're back in the same boat looking for a quality HC.

Holmgren is a great Pres as far as I can tell. I like his experience and knowledge in that position, but I want to see him cultivate this relatively green coaching staff into a group that will be called 'geniuses' by the media.

I'm willing to give Daboll a little slack and a little more rope. We need more offensive weapons.

Sweet read!
I have waffled from loving mangini in the beginning to disliking much about his ways and back and forth at least 3 times....

At this point i believe we can trust holmgren and heckert to do the right thing rather they decide to keep mangini or not, because i do believe holmgren will turn this club around!
And their guy is our guy...

Mangini stays, Mangini goes, I hardly see the fan base's opinion swaying without a larger portion of the games going into the "W" column. I hope that Holmgren doesn't coach again. I know that's the pretty situation but that stage of Holmgren's career is done, IMO. The 'regime' 'czar' 'H3' should chose a suitable replacement and then give that coach the time to get the players on his system. If there is another coaching change, it WILL set this team back before it moves forward. Every single one of us who has seen the revolving door of coaches come and go should know this.
