Have you people ever played Madden? Geez
There reason I ask is because Madden does a very good job at visualizing a defensive play or scheme, especially in zone coverage...
I may be worng, but if you read the article Wright was referring to a "bell" type coverage scheme, which to me made is sound like a version of the cover 3.
Wright can very well defend the slant if he's playing press, man, or zone in the flat....
but when playing a cover three your basically playing at least 5 yards back off the line of scrimmage, in that scheme he is in a deep zone, along with the other CB and either the SS or FS
If the receiver runs a short slant, theres no defending it in this scheme, the object is to keep it in front of you and bring the WR down, technically on that play if a slant is the route the ROLB is technically in charge of that territory
now during the play in question, wright immediately dropped back into his zone at the snap as he was supposed to, the WR ran the slant caught the ball, but instead of continuing the path of the route right into the ROLB, the WR cut back and tuned it directly up field, at this point in time the runner (WR) is now the CB and the Safeties responsibility, Ward and Wright both missed the tackles causing a score.
When you watch it it looks like wright had a lapse in coverage, which is just plain false, he did what he was supposed to do, where it broke down was when Wright AND Ward both missed the tackles, Ward took to sharp of an angle, and Wright just whiffed
You can yell at Wright just as much as you can yell at Ward here, the mistake was the missed tackles or the play called, not allowing the catch
If were going to get mad at our players, lets do it for the right reason.
