Eric Mangini: Browns QB Colt McCoy "definitely'' has sprained ankle

Dennis Manoloff, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns quarterback Colt McCoy "definitely'' has a sprained ankle, leaving his status for Sunday uncertain and perhaps opening the door for Jake Delhomme to start against his former team, the Carolina Panthers.

Browns coach Eric Mangini said Monday afternoon that the rookie McCoy "definitely'' has an ankle sprain but did not speak to the extent of the injury.

When Mangini was asked if McCoy has the dreaded high-ankle sprain, the coach did not say yes or no, only that the ankle is sprained and that the Browns will know more Wednesday.

McCoy was expected to have and MRI scan Monday.

McCoy was injured early in the third quarter of the Browns' 24-20 loss at Jacksonville. The left foot appeared to bend slightly during a sack by Jeremy Minsey. McCoy remained in the game and eventually exited the locker room wearing a boot.

McCoy has played in five games, all starts (2-3). He is 81-for-127 for 975 yards and three touchdowns. He has been intercepted three times. His rating is 85.3.

Delhomme, signed as a free agent in the offseason, started the opener at Tampa Bay and suffered a high-ankle sprain while being dragged down as he threw a pick.

Mangini on Monday said Delhomme is "as close to 100 percent as you're going to be at this point.''

Seneca Wallace replaced Delhomme for a Week 2 start against the Chiefs in Cleveland. In his fourth straight start, Oct. 10 against the Falcons, Wallace suffered a high-ankle sprain.

McCoy, who had not been scheduled to play this season, started the next week at Pittsburgh.

I lol'd.

Seriously, it's just too ironic. All our of QBs are injured with ankle sprains. ALL of them.

At this point I'm just getting apathetic.

bummer is... Colt only needed .6 more games a starter to get his salary incentive. So Seneca starts next week and we go on from there... will Colt see another snap this year ? He deserves it and his wife agrees with me.

I would too , but, look at how that sprained ankle affects your mobility to get away from the guys that outweigh you by like oh... 30+kilos.
simple fact ...this last game our O-line sucked.
could not open holes for Hillis (2.4 ypc ave???? thats like at least 2.0 under norm)]
could not stop their QB from being smeared into the grass..I know humans make good fertilizer ...but hell lets keep it to rose gardens!

Yeah, I agree. I am just glad he isn't tore up and needs season ending surgery.

Our OL is now responsible for getting all 3 of our QB's killed off.. Delhomme will get the start this week unless Colt heals magically.. I for one want to see Colt.. But I am also still VERY CURIOUS to see what a veteran can do with this offense too. As in Delhomme healthy...and a running game.. When Jake played in game 1 we really did not know what we had in Hillis.. It will be interesting.

I'd like to see Colt too...but I'd also like to make sure he STAYS healthy long term. Putting him out there if he's not 110% could be bad.

Delhomme it is...

Any word on how Cribbs is doing?
