Berea Report: Big Play Abe

BEREA, Ohio—Abe Elam said he always had it in him. “I’m just doing my job and trying to be consistent and doing what has happened for me,” Elam said. “Nothing has changed, but things have started coming my way. “I’m not surprised,” he said. “I’ve done this before. I did this in New York and now it’s starting to come around again. The opportunities are coming up and I’m taking advantage of it.” Elam had a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Bills on Nov. 2, 2008 when he was with the Jets. “Abe made big plays for us in New York,” Eric Mangini said. “I’m not surprised at his play.” Elam had two sacks last week against Carolina. The previous week he stripped Maurice Jones-Drew of the ball and returned it for a touchdown. Earlier against Jacksonville, he intercepted a pass from Joes-Drew. “Everything is the same,” he said. “The opportunities are coming up and I’m taking advantage of it.” On the season, Elam has 54 tackles, two sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception and seven passes broken up. Elam had 88 tackles in 2009. T.J. Ward credits Elam for helping him make the transition to the NFL. “Abe’s been great,” Ward said. “He’s helped me since the first day I’ve been here.” Notebook Looks Like Jake: With Colt McCoy not practicing Wednesday, Eric Mangini said that Jake Delhomme will get the majority of the reps with the first team. “Jake will get the bulk of the reps (Wednesday).” Mangini said Delhomme did a lot of good things against the Panthers, despite the two interceptions. “There were a ton of good plays,” he said. “He moved the offense well. The offense was on the same page and a lot of that is on the quarterback. “He’s got really good poise and we have extreme confidence in him in keeping drives going,” he said. “He’s outstanding in the huddle and throughout the week.” Mangini sounded as though Delhomme’s positive play outweighed his negative. “Jake did a ton of stuff Sunday that was really, really good,” Mangini said. “(Carolina’s) defense causes problems and they cause a lot of problems. He was able to neutralize a lot of their problems, he was able to handle a lot of their problems and he was able to give us an opportunity to run the ball like we ran the ball. “His leadership this past week was outstanding, a big part of our good week of practice was him,” he said. “You can’t look past that either, he put us in a lot of good positions. What you want to do is eliminate those mistakes that become gigantic in the scheme of things.” Francies Back, Lose Asante: The Browns lost fifth-round draft pick S Larry Asante, who was signed off the Browns’ practice squad to the Buccaneers’ active roster. To replace Asante on the practice squad, the Browns signed CB Coye Francies to the practice squad. Francies was a sixth-round pick of the Browns in 2009 and he was waived in the final roster cut downs on Sept. 3, 2010. He spent the 2010 UFL season with Las Vegas, helping them win the league championship. He played in eight games with 11.5 tackles and two interceptions. Norwood Promoted: WR Jordan Norwood was added to the active roster off the practice squad. “We wanted to reward Jordan for the progress he’s made,” Mangini said. “He’s done a nice job in practice making a lot of catches.” If Josh Cribbs can’t return kicks, Mangini said Norwood could. Injury Update: Mangini said that several players will not practice Wednesday including Colt McCoy,Scott Fujita, T.J. Ward, Lawrence Vickers, Eric Barton, Eric Wright and Josh Cribbs. Mangini said that he expects to have back Wright, among others back, possibly, Thursday. The only information on McCoy was that he is ‘closer from where we were last week.’ Mangini said that Cribbs could be back in a bigger role than what he did last week in just returning kicks and punts. Mangini was asked if Cribbs was playing as well as he did last season. “In some areas he’s playing better,” Mangini said. “Teams have made a collective decision to not let him ruin the game for them. I'm still critical of Abe's play but he's definitely been a case of the "when you have good players on the D, it makes the players around them better" argument. It seems his gaffes have not been as monumental as last season and he's been holding his own playing opposite of T.J Ward. I find there have been bigger targets for the ire to be directed at, like Eric Wright who I don't think any of us expected to underachieve this season.

Abe has stepped up some this year but he still ha times where he completely disappears in games. His play is erratic and he needs to become consistent. Problem is, I don't think he has a much higher ceiling.

As for Wright. I think we all got hood winked because defenses were picking on McDonald with a lot of success and didn't expose Wright. Sometimes we get fooled about a player because the guy next to him sucks.

Sort of like when teams used to run the ball down our throats, we didn't think our pass defense was that bad. It was only because they didn't expose it until we started stopping the run.

I still call him "Look Behind You Abe", because that's generally where the wide receiver is.
