Of your list there Flug, I'd say maybe only getting rid of Braylon and Shaun Smith, adding Roth, Bernard, Coleman, Moore, Stuckey, Mack and Womack are truly worth noting, the rest are good additions for what roles they play but overall could be replaced. Their spots on our team are not essential but they do play a role on our team regardless. |
Agreed, this is a work in progress BUT whether a guy rotates in or starts the roster needed WAY more bodies than it was set up to acquire in 2009. I'll explain more about this specifically in a minute. Keep in mind, Schaefering and Coleman were getting alot of respect from around the league this year. Coleman had a high ankle sprain which has effected his play quite a bit but he was off to a strong start early on. And I remember KOKs wanted to point out how efficient he noticed Scheafering was last year.
Anyway, IF Mangini ONLY stayed within the Savage plan of just 4 draft picks for 2009 to followup Phils' previous plan that netted 1 keeper on draft day of 2008 - Mangini doesn't trade for MORE bodies needed for the 2 deep rotations and situational defenses from the Jets for experienced guys from his 9-7 defense the year before. End result? There is NO David Bowens to replace the injured D'Qwell Jackson with. That means we lost quite a bit of big plays defensively in the 2nd half of the season. We also began to learn WHO Brian Schaefering was and what the ONLY keeper from the 2008 draft (Rubin) was capable of when Rogers went down. Again, a refusal to stick to Phil's narrow plan that traded away draft picks for BAD moves was some very unnoticed but clutch house cleaning moves far better than Mangini gets credit for. All he gets regarding the countless Savage personnel problem solves of 2009 was "round 2 was a disaster." Yes, there were 2 picks that aren't impressing anybody BUT keep in mind what was committed to Stallworth and Edwards in the first place as well overcoming Veikune with Roth and Benard. And how about the high dollar amounts committed to Dave Zastudil when Mangini found Reggie Hodges to pin people deep alot? Field position pinning Pittsburgh deep impacted their playcalling to our favor.
I'm absolutely stunned at how many would rather puke than understand this epic addressment of numbers for depth and upgrade in 2009. As I've been saying, Mangini set Heckert and Holmgren up with a far easier problem solve than they would have had if he sucked at personnel moves and stuck to the Savage plan that hnadcuffed this franchise into embarassment. IMO, too many fans are blaming Mangini for alot of Savage's football sins. I guess we've been practicing this shit for 20 years now and practice makes perfect.
Can we just START holding the Caremen Policys and the Phil Savages a little more accountable than the Head Coaches walking into their messes? I'm ecstatic Mangini has Heckert and Holmgren because that forms a strong trio. Their first draft together looks pretty freakin impressive.
