| Mangini names McCoy Browns' starter for rest of season CBSSports.com wire reports Dec. 16, 2010 BEREA, Ohio -- Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy will start Cleveland's final three games this season, starting Sunday vs. Cincinnati. McCoy sat out the past three games with a high ankle sprain, but after he looked good in practice on Wednesday coach Eric Mangini decided to move him back into the starting lineup ahead of Jake Delhomme. It's unusual for Mangini to announce his plans at quarterback, but he felt McCoy has earned the opportunity. McCoy, who only received a chance to play this season because of injuries to Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, went 2-3 in five starts. The Browns are 5-8. Mangini said McCoy was "excited and determined" when he was told about starting. Mangini usually likes to play possom as long as he can. It's refreshing to hear this announcement. It's a solid endorsement of Colt..and hopefully can end all the nonsense about Wallace and Delhomme since they are both backups anyway.. who knows if either one is here next year.. (subject for the offseason debates please)

He know he have to put his faith on Colt as it will help him to stay as Head Coach. He know other two guys aren't the one to use. He need to know if he need to use first/second round pick to pick a QB or not.

LOL. I see it like this. Mangini: Colt, kid, save my job. Take me to the promised land, just like Brady took the old man to the promised land...... Colt: Nope, not going to Mangini. You screwed me in training camp, now I am going to screw you Mangini: You bastard........ Colt: Just kidding, I know you were just trying to motivate me. I sucked hard in training camp and you gave me motivation...... Mangini: ok... Colt: Listen, we are going to sweep the rest of the games out, ok, you will keep your job. Mangini: Great, motivate them Colt Colt: I sure will, listen, you getting rid of Dumball right? Mangini: Well, I gave Brian a shot, I really wanted the other Brian instead. But the guy hasn't grown and setback the franchise. Plus my buddy McDaniels is available..... Colt: Uh, maybe I am not going to win you these games afterall......... The end. |

Or, instead of the usual coach bashing, maybe folks could view this as a sign that Mangini's job is secure. After all, one could argue that Wallace or Delhomme give you a "better" (i.e., veteran) chance to win now and save your job. Naming a still largely untested rookie as the "starter for the remainder of the year" sounds to me like a move of a coach confident in his job status. Just sayin'..... |

Finally a move nobody can question Mangini about. I LOVED this quote from Mangini and it explains a lot of what we have seen and didn't see our offense do the last few weeks. Referring to Colt's success against four very good teams: “It was significant because we were able to do more because he made that possible,” Mangini said. “What the quarterback can do dictates what we can do and how we call the game. He’s going to be running the show on the field and he has to have a comfort level. |

I don't see why who plays QB has ANYTHING to do with the coaches job. It's about the team.. I don't think Mangini is coaching scared..going home at night "Boo hoo hoo I'm scared, Oh mommy I might lose my job, oh Henny Penny what do I do.. boo hoo hoo..If I don't play the right QB I will be fired, If I make the slightest mistake I will lose my job.. ".. NO .. Mangini is not coaching scared..he's just coaching..to beat the Bengals.. Coaching is too much work to look past the next game..especially when your not going to the playoffs..there is no reason to. Mangini survived the disaster that was last year. If he had a time to worry..It was LAST offseason. I believe he is only concerned about beating the Bengals.. Colt is the best QB on the roster and will rightly play the best guy.. that's it.no more not less. Too many of you guys are too worried about the coaches job.. I don't think Mangini is thinking past the Bengals.. which is exactly where his focus should be. Mangini knows that there is nothing he can do if Holmgren want to fire him or not fire him..he just coaches.. Holmgren is going to do whatever it is he's going to do.. I seriously doubt anything in the next 3 weeks will really play greatly on any decision Holmgren makes...unless Mangini punches a player or a referee or cheats with Holmgrens wife or something ludicrously stupid as that..but even if we go 0-3 or 3-0 the next three weeks.. I think Holmgren has already seen what he needs to to make his decision.. Maybe there is no decision to make at all. But you would have to ask Mike that.
