Mike Williams, SYR. Said he could probably be gotten in the 3/4 round. Isn't this a WAY better value than Dez Bryant at #7????

I think that's impossible to answer. It's a lower choice for a lesser player with physical talent and lots of question marks.

Time would tell, I guess. But I thought of you when I saw the video.

I wouldn't be all for drafting the guy if I truly thought him to be a bad dude. I'm fairly certain the reason he was dismissed from the team was because he went gambing at Turning Stone (local Syracuse Indian casino).

I think that, as evaluators, we need to discern between the real flaws (Laurence Phillips) and the tennage-style crap (Mike Williams, Dez Bryant).

I would be all over him in round 3 providing the Browns are confident he won't be a cancer.

They will have to do some homework on Williams because of character issues and no veteran WRs and true clubhouse leaders to keep him in line.

That said, Benn @ #38 is a hell of a better deal then Bryant @ #7. Benn could be a real steal because of his lack of productivity his senior year. But, that was more about the lack of a QB then Benn's potential talent. He has the potential to be a #1.

I also think Gilyard could be a great 3 round pickup.

Throw in a solid TE like Pitta or Moeavi and a guy like Holt, Chambers or even Evans in from FA and even Shep might like that.

The one thing I don't see Heckert and Holmgren doing is adding another young WR with our top pick, no veteran go to guy and a question mark at QB. Bryant just isn't going to happen. I don't care how talented he is. QB, OL, CB and LB are impact player positions not WR. QBs make WRs not the other way around.

Mangini likes giving his player written tests. Mike Williams likes to cheat on tests.

Mangini, according to his critics, was such a jerk with the Jets that his players quit on him. Mike Williams quit on his college team.

As mz. already knows, I was a big fan of what I saw from Williams on the field; I agree with McShay that he's the 2nd most talented receiver in this class.

But when you have a head coach who's temperamentally incapable of dealing with problem children, you have to wonder whether adding a guy like Williams would be a smart move.

This isn't Mangini's team anymore, despite what TBPP or Vegas will tell you (). If Holmgren and Heckert say "hey Eric, here's your new wideout," Mangini's reply will be along the lines of "Sir, yes Sir." But yeah, Mangini's bitchy personality doesn't handle other "problem" personalities well. Some other team with a more willing HC will get a fucking STEAL drafting this guy. I'm very confident regarding where I stand on Williams. The guy made GREG F-ING PAULUS look like a decent QB. Greg Paulus. And again, there's a difference between Phillips character issues and immaturity. Williams, I'd gamble, is the latter. And if not, so what. We have 11 picks this year. Roll the dice, H3!

And shep, the youtube film on him is sketchy and minimal, but, to me, he's the most talented player to come to Cuse since Dwight Freeney. And say what you will about the state of the SU program, it does, even in its darkest days, produce pro players.

Now talking value, I'm all for waiting and adding Williams, Benn or Briscoe later on in the draft and going D (or QB if we choose to) in round 1. I do like Bryant, but as a pure value pick, Berry or Haden makes waaaaaaaaaaaaay more sense to me.

Oh, I think Dez Bryant is VERY much a possibility. If he's the best player on the board... and you don't have a #1 WR? You simply can't take him out of consideration.

I think he's going to be considered in that blue chip area with Suh, McCoy, Berry, Haden, and maybe Bradford... but there are a couple of those positions I'm just SO wary about at #7. It's a personal thing.

I think the consensus will be that Dez Bryant is great value at #7 at a position of need. And I'd still add a veteran. We suck at WR!

BUT... yeah, I saw a nice al plan on here, too. I don't trust myself on Benn, but if H3 loves him and he falls to #38, that's cool, along with... maybe Torry Holt?

I just think that, while Bryant is the consensus top of the heap, that Benn, Briscoe, the broken dude from Tech whose name eludes me at the moment and even Mike Williams have star potential. MUCH moreso than the second-rounders we drafted last year. It's just SUCH a deep WR draft that I'd rather gamble on one of the non-Bryant guys and take a blue chip defender early.

But that's just one of many strategies we could employ. I actually love the position we're in leading up to the draft. Almost to the point where we couldn't fuck this up, save for a Jeff Lagemanesque brainfart of epic proportions.

Mike Williams (WR) - College Player
(Sun, Feb 21 - 12:59pm ET)

National Football Post scout Wes Bunting calls Syracuse WR Mike Williams "a Brandon Marshall-type guy" who is a candidate to tear up this week's Combine.

Williams was kicked off the Syracuse football team in 2007, sat out 2008, and returned in 2009 only to quit halfway through the season. Bunting calls him a "big physical guy who goes up and gets the football as well as anyone in the draft." A huge Combine could vault Williams into the back end of the first round. Only Dez Bryant is a lock for the top 32 among wide receivers.
