| Terry Pluto is talking about Colt McCoy, Brian Daboll Published: Sunday, December 19, 2010, 12:15 AM Updated: Sunday, December 19, 2010, 1:14 AM By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer ABOUT THE BROWNS . . . 1. Colt McCoy starting the final three games of the season against three teams in the Browns' division . . . isn't this worth watching? Won't it give the fans (and front office) a real gauge to judge coach Eric Mangini, McCoy and the rest of the team? Doesn't the combination of McCoy and Peyton Hillis give you reason to be hopeful about next season? 2. In McCoy's five starts (2-3 record), the weakest team he faced was Jacksonville (8-5). The combined record of the five teams is 48-17! He faced three of the top six NFL defenses -- the Steelers, the Jets and the Saints. The three games against the Bengals (2-11), Steelers (10-3) and Ravens (9-4) shouldn't offer anything the rookie from Texas hasn't already encountered. 3. Those who defend offensive coordinator Brian Daboll say he has never worked with a decent quarterback . . . or even a quarterback who starts regularly. Of the five (Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace and McCoy), only McCoy would be considered a possible long-range NFL starter. With McCoy, let's see if the game plan improves. 4. Don't you think the Browns would have won in Buffalo with McCoy? I also think they could have won with Wallace. But the fact is the Browns can't win anywhere with that type of timid game plan with so much pressure put on Hillis' shoulders to carry the offense. APThe Browns could use running back Jerome Harrison (33), who isn't seeing much playing time in Philadelphia. 5. The Browns miss Jerome Harrison, or at least the Jerome Harrison of 2009. Now with the Eagles, Harrison carried the ball 11 times for 109 yards in a rout of Washington. But in the past four games, he has a total of seven rushes for 28 yards. He has caught only two passes. They simply don't play him. 6. Meanwhile, Mike Bell has carried the ball 19 times for 30 yards with the Browns and has not caught a pass. He offers no relief for Hillis. It's hard to believe Bell is the same guy who rushed for 654 yards (3.8 average) for the Super Bowl champs New Orleans last season. Then again, the Eagles don't see the same Harrison as Browns fans did in 2009. A running back with very average skills would look great as a backup for the Browns. 7. Hillis leads the NFL with eight fumbles (five lost). He had two (one lost) in the opener at Tampa Bay. In the next 12 games, he had three (all lost). Then he had three (one lost) at Buffalo. Dealing with injuries, Josh Cribbs is having a poor year running the ball, be it in returns or in the wildcat. 8. The Browns' special teams rank No. 1 in covering kickoffs, No. 6 in covering punts. That's with Cribbs rarely on the coverage teams. Coach Brad Seely's group does a great job in this area, just as Seely did turning Reggie Hodges into a terrific punter. Cribbs' decline has hurt the return game. 9. Don Banks of Sports Illustrated did a "redraft" and rates McCoy as the No. 7 pick of 2010. He has safety T.J. Ward at No. 14, Joe Haden at No. 17. I would rate Haden in the top 10. The Browns having three in Banks' top 17 is a tribute to General Manager Tom Heckert, who worked with team President Mike Holmgren and Mangini on the draft. It's why I hope this management team can stay together -- they agree on some good players. The free-agent signings of Scott Fujita and Ben Watson also were wise moves. 10. When the Browns traded Kamerion Wimbley to Oakland for a third-round pick, I thought it was unnecessary. Part of the reason they did was to clear salary-cap space to sign Fujita and Watson. But they also used that third-rounder to select McCoy. In Oakland, Wimbley has been OK -- 49 tackles, 6.0 sacks. He had 11 sacks as a rookie for the Browns. In the past four years, he has had only 21 sacks. 11. Watson has 51 catches for 582 yards and three touchdowns. Former Browns tight end Kellen Winslow has 52 catches for 558 yards and three touchdowns. Watson had 29 first downs, Winslow 28. 12. While fans would love to see more of Evan Moore, the 6-6 receiver/tight end can't stay healthy. That's why he has been cut by other teams, and why the Browns have limited his snap total this season. He is out this week with a hip injury. ABOUT COLT McCOY'S NUMBERS . . . 1. He completes 91 percent of passes behind the line of scrimmage, which is above the 85 percent average. 2. He completes 60 percent of passes from 1-10 yards, below the average of 67 percent. 3. He completes 65 percent of passes from 10-20 yards, above the average of 40 percent. 4. He has had only two passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. 5. His 7.7 yards per attempt is No. 9 in the NFL. 6. When blitzed, he completes 60 percent of passes. He has been sacked on nine of 66 blitzes, but has not thrown an interception in these circumstances. I fricken love Pluto, it seems we have a mutual agreement on many of these points Especially the points centered around us missing Jerome Harrison, and the Kamerion Wimbley situation (Benard has more sacks btw!!!!) I love the woay Terry here worded his opening statements, he is basicallyu saying here (in my opinion) that the organization is telling Mangini and Friends, heres colt, heres three games against division rivals, show us what you got. This will be a serious evaluation period, I cant wait to go to the steelers/browns game!!
