Default Dont be surprised if MH steps down to Coach

It is quite concievable after this Season of turmoil ends the Browns Boss Mike Holmgren may step down from GM to Coach the Cleveland Browns if he decides not to retain Eric Mangini or hire someonelse to fill in that capacity. He basically has 4 individuals in certain positions in the front office who were on his coaching staff in Green Bay and in Seattle. Gil Haskell a former offensive asst. Mark Schiefelbein,Bryan Wiedmier and Kent Johnston current browns strength and cond. coach.

In place already are guys who have coached and worked with Holmgren in some capacity through his career, meaning parts of a coaching staff are inplace should MH takes on the reins himself. Holmgren may decide to stay with Mangini one more season and stockpile talent wich may ultimately set the plate for his takeover in 2012 or sooner. I just thought it was worth noting and something to talk about...wether this happens remains to be seen but I find it ironic non the less he may just be recharging his batteries for an imminent return to the sidelines.

MH is president, not GM. Heckert (corrected my type, thinking one thing typed the other) is the GM. Personally, I don't think MH is ever returning to the sidelines. He's 60 years old. I don't think he wants to work the hours HC requires (upwards of 20 hours per day, 7 days a week), nor can he handle it at this point. There was a reason before the 2008 season even started that he announced he was stepping down as the HC in SEA after that season. I sooner believe he will bring someone from his coaching tree if he does fire EM. I am sure he's a got a guy in mind, much the way Parcell's had a guy in mind when he became the football czar in MIA.

I agree. I think at most he'll get someone who is like-minded and then live vicariously, thereby satisfying his HC itch, but not signing up for the grind.

I meant to say Heckert and typed Haskel for some odd reason (probably because of seeing it in the opening post)

I also think Holmgren is a tinkerer by nature and would love to see who he can get in here to coach, kind of like he did with QB's in the spring. He loved all of the QB wheeling and dealing.

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking Mangini has to win the last 2 to stick around.

I'd be more then surprised if Holmgren stepped down to become HC. The guy is 61 years old and has a great job where he currently has the say on football matters and makes 9 million.

Why does anybody think he would want to move back to 18 hours days that cosume a HC for most of the year.

Beside, how do you think it would work since he gave Heckert authority and final say on the 53 man roster. So, I say no way in this lifetime.

Besides, he can tinker all he wants by bringing in the people he wants to run the show. And, don't be fooled to thinking he would limit his guys to just people from his tree. The man has made contacts over the years that go well beyond the bounds of his coaching tree.

Holmgren didn't come here to be coach. People have to stop listening to Mary Kay and understand that when he took the Presidents job he stepped away from coaching for good. Thinking otherwise makes for some good sound bites but it won't happen.

Holmgren will work with Heckert to put the pieces in place and I look forward to it. If Holmgren wanted sole power and wanted to run the entire show he would have brought in a puppet as GM and not Heckert.

He teases coming back to coach in his press conferences, but I think thats just him stirring the pot, I think the guy likes to screw with people (alot like Gruden, he LOVES to screw with people). Its not necessarily a bad thing, he just want everyone on their toes.

You are right. He doesn't need the 18 hours days of being a coach, he can tinker from where he is at and bring in his people to do it his way.

I don't think he even teases it as much as give as sound bites in direct answer to questions, such as questions of do you miss coaching. He give the answer you'd expect, that yes he does, and that turns into the press saying he wants to coach. Heck, I sometimes miss being 21, but doesn't mean I want to be 21 again.

Hell, if you don't want to be 21 again can I take your turn?

I'd be younger then my kids. They would have to find someone else to borrow money from.

Don Shula coached well into his early 70's if Im not mistaken...how old is Joe Paterno?...70 somthing almost 80?...Jerry Burns coached a long time so I think being 61 doesnt hold water...once a coach...always a coach....Sparky Anderson managed Baseball well into old age...and that is a hell of alot more hours than regular HC. I think more likely though he hands the baton off to someonelse. But I wont be surprised either way.
