Their goal should be setting this team up to win, and everything else should be secondary. |

I agree with that sentiment Dogpaddle but don't you think it would be "best" for this team and office to KNOW as soon as possible what's in the cards for next season? I understand the need or desire to "wait" to see who might become available or who flat out won't. I don't believe any retainment when the season is over and the front office is going another direction is good for the team in any context.

You are Holmgren and you think Mangini may not be the best available option for you. You covet Coach X. Coach X may or may not be available. Time will tell. Option 1: Fire Mangini immediately after Steelers game to make a statement. Hope Coach X may become available and choose the Browns over other options. This may backfire if he doesn't become available OR chooses another team. Option 2: Wait to get a better sense of whether Coach X is likely to become available and interested in your team. Don't react immediately after the Steelers game JUST to make a "statement". I would go with Option 2. Some may not believe it, but you could end up with a coach who is worse than Mangini so I'd rather reduce the odds of ending up with someone worse and not just act to act. Like I've said, I understand the possibilities that could/might be garnered by waiting. I just don't believe in it. IF Holmgren wants Mangini gone..you pull the trigger when the season is over, not when you see if you might be able to get who you want. If people think Mangini isn't aware of his situation, he is, period. apparently one head office agrees more or less. Chargers sticking with G.M., coach | ProFootballTalk |

Keep in mind the possible holdout..I think that plays in Mangini's favor and he is retained for the next year...simply because there HAS BEEN improvement...and a new guy (even Holmgren himself) may not have the off-season to get to know the players. I think we keep Mangini by default (even though I think he earned it), and next year is the make it or break it year for him. Now, as for OC...I think Mangini gets a chance to change his guy or put himself on a VERY short leash.

I think the FO already set an example this past off season when Holmgren came in. Laid down the law for the most part regarding pretty much everything. Brought in Heckert, we had the best draft we've had in a decade and the team, though the record may not indicate and is decimated by injury, is wholly improved across the board. But yeah lets hang the head coach and set the team back another season or two just so we can have a horror movie star as our head coach. Wash, rinse, repeat in a few more seasons.

For those of you talking about Holmgren as HC...be careful what you wish for. Not saying he is a bad HC....BUT He sucked as a GM/HC...so how much harder to be PRESIDENT/HC Also, there is this small matter of the GM position...as PRESIDENT, Holmgren will be the GM's BOSS!!! That basically means he has the authority to OVERRULE EVERY DECISION by the GM...thereby nullifying the structure that Lerner wanted so badly. To me...having Holmgren be a dual President/HC is a step backwards. May as well have kept Mangini as HC and hired on a new GM to report to him....well, maybe not that far back of a step, but sure sounds similar to me.
