The Browns still have a lot of holes to fill on Offense and on Defense. Heckert brought in something like 7-8 new starters through FA, trade, and the draft and it will take at least one more off season like that to get this team to respectability. If the whole offensive and defensive philosophy changes then it might take 2 more great off seasons to be a good team. |
Exactly! It seems like Andy Reid keeps the guy away from the players on game day and uses him as a playcalling consultant more than THE OC. Aren't we pretty sure Reid calls 75-90% of the plays in Philly? We need a HC the players will believe in and relate to. Since Mangini just HAD to go - it's gonna be critically important there's an upgrade made to that part of things. We were only winning 4-5 games a year
before Mangini so I need to understand for the VERY first time the benefit of playing musical coaches.
With all the people that love to talk NFL draft over the years - did Mike Wallace or Emanualle Sanders ever enter any of our predraft discussions? They might have appeared on an occasional list of names - I just don't remember alot of discussion about them. When everyone was celebrating D'Qwell Jackson near the tippy top of round 2 - Pittsburgh took Lamar Woodley later when we had Ozzie's former secretary in charge of drafting and trading away massive draft volumes. FWIW, I never heard Dick Lebeau was a genius in Cincy or Buffalo until he arrived in Pittsburgh. Why do we suppose that is? Easier to coach talented players? And why do they go 1-2 in the last 3 games #43 missed? Steler fan would like to tell us how decimated they were with injuries missing Aaron Smith AND Polly for considerable parts of a playoff absent 2009. So much for all they needed was a genius standing out of bounds.
The difference between Cleveland and Pittsburgh hasn't been Head Coaches - it's been the setup that has allowed them the continuity of hiring ONLY Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin over the 40 years I've been watching. How many Head Coaches has Cleveland had in half that time? Are we EVER going to give the owner and previous front offices any such credit for where we are today? When they draft LBers - they're freakin keepers folks. When they draft WRs - they're freakin keepers folks. They're so good at drafting - they NEVER have to bring in disinterested FAs that act like Cleveland has to pay them for all their best football in the rear view mirror? How did Dave Zastudil, Donte Stallworth, Jamal Lewis, Corey Williams, Shaun Rogers, Shaun Smith and several other overpaid stiffs help THIS staff? Pittsburgh doesn't have to worry about that kind of thing because they can draft good EVERY year. We had 1 keeper from 2008 and 4 picks scheduled for 2009.
People keep trying to set me straight that Lerner is a GOOD owner that cares because he spends money. When he hired his last head Coach - how LONG did he want to take doing such an important move? Did he have a front office ready to rock FOR that Head Coach? No, that stuff takes time and commitment folks! I know what he's done AFTERWARD; but it undid the last 2 years so people are gonna have to excuse my reluctance to be happy hearing the leading candidates are John Fox and Marty's Morningsickness according to the NFL Channel. The WORLD around Cleveland isn't stupid about where our franchise is; hence the wonderful names like John Fox and Marty M. Cleveland has 1 good draft in 11-12 years causing the cholesterol of FA paycheck cashers like Shaun Rogers. That ALSO means the ideal names want the jobs that have MORE good drafts to work with than we offer here. This has been career suicide for anyone that wanted to HELP our cause like Mangini so its another strong example of why ideal guys know how to reply with
"no thanks." Anyway, here we are right back to
"Cleveland fans just need to be patient."
