Masters: Yup, I knew that was the rule, my fault I miss typed and put WR instead of typing receiver which includes RB's catching passes. I was arguing that I think that the same hit that is made on a RB who is running, should be also legal on a WR making a catch. I dont feel that its right that the same hit can be illegal depending on whether the person is catching the ball or running.
PGL, that's the point. A receiver going for the catch is vulnerable but a RB never is when running with the ball unless he tries to spin out of a tackle then someone like Ed Reed spears him in the back of the ribs, ahem.

RB who is running is not in a defenseless position. He's not looking a ball in and just standing there like a receiver is. So it's never the same hit. There are no RBs just standing in the middle of the field with their attention focused on an objecting coming to them, and no ability to brace for the hit.

I know lol

Im giving my opinion on what the rules SHOULD be, I was saying I dont like the wimpification of football, Im for extension of the season, and the de-wimpification.

It will probably lead to more injuries, but my attitude, is that its the risk you take when you accept millions of dollars to play a game

Ahhh...I see what you were saying now.

While I can kinda understand the justification that "hey, that's what you get paid millions of dollars to do" - I don't think it's fair to do that to someone who is so young and who doesn't really understand his own mortality.

Hell, when I was 20-something (just a couple years ago ) I didn't give two shits about minor injuries. I was lucky, but I wouldn't have been bothered by a broken wrist or leg or ankle...until now.

I would never have even thought about the pain and damage I was doing to my body until it was too late to get any compensation for it. And I think THAT'S part of the problem.

These guys are paid a lot of money for a relatively short career. They become accustomed to that kind of lifestyle and then it's gone. There is no long term health care for NFL players. So what does a Jim Brown do to be able to walk better? Who pays for that medical bill?

Many players don't have many options.

I don't think anyone should be expected to risk their lives for a game.

Hiway, excellent points. On top of that, with more games guys careers are only going to get shorter. Which means they'll likely make less over the course of their careers. Most guys don't make their big money until their 2nd or 3rd contract. With more regular season games more guys won't even be getting to that 2nd or 3rd contract.

No one is softening football, outside of maybe how much they protect QBs.

Im shocked that they dont have healthcare for life, as well as NFL pension plans etc. That IMHO is what should be done if they dont already have it.

Golfer, I played Rugby, no pads at all, alot of hits, and ALOT of injuries (broke my own collar bone, you can see it in my sig pic). Im not likening real players to virtual ones on Madden, I just think that if fans pay the money to see big hits, lots of crazy TD catches, etc. and if the players are getting paid that big money, thats what the fans should get. Without us, they dont get a game check. Its kind if like the circus and jackass, you pay money to see people do crazy, amazing, and deadly things. The performers take the risk, to get the money. Its a business.

And none of that is being taken away by the NFL enforcing rules that have existed for years. You can have all of that within the rules, and we have had that within the rules.

Glad you caught that Tom. Bmore was shocked at Hillis the first game, so much so that some of their guys said he had their Pro Bowl votes. Then Raymont ran his mouth about how they were going to shut him down and lo and behold his little buddy Reed delivers the cheap hit that knocks an already beat up Hillis out of the game.

I guarantee they had some sort of bounty or reward for that, and this coming from Lewis who has been one of the most vocal players toward not wanting an 18 game schedule.

See the hypocrisy? That was akin to what Roid Monkey does, another crybaby against the rules they are trying to enforce. Nobody is saying to not play physical, but if these guys are so concerned about their fellow players, perhaps they should learn how to play clean. Ward didn't come close to one dirty hit since he was fined.
