Quote:
Q: What about continuity? How important is that in finding the next coach?
"I'm not thinking much about continuity right now. That's not part of the equation. And I talked about that with the players -- trying to find the right person, we have to play better, have to be more committed, have to have a good offseason."

Q: Are the Browns starting over?
"I don't (think so). But I understand the feeling of here we go again. Have we taken some strides in the last year? I think we have. I don't want to have to do this again, so I really have to get this right for the organization stability. While I understand why people would say that, I do feel we have done some things we can build on."

Q: Why fire Mangini?
"My expectations for the season were higher."
These are some of the most telling quotes I think. Holmgren wasn't going to keep Mangini around just for continuity sake. The bottom line is he didn't win enough games period.

Yes, the battered wife syndrome is not the case with most of us here, nor with the majority of the fanbase IMO. It is simply people with realistic aspirations and expectations not looking at the glass as half empty when we see obvious growth and improvement from one year to the next. Albeit, the last game really kinda crushed a lot of the improvement we saw during the course of the season, regardless of injuries, meaningless games etc.

You wonder how an experienced, talented OC would have been under Mangini?

Mangini didn't hire one so its certainly on him, but most of the questionable game day decisions were on offense IMHO. A former DC as head coach with a first time OC wasn't a great recipe for success.

Pointless discussion anyway.

Hey, at least we have a great long snapper. (Just can't get enough of that sig)

I think that is pretty much where Walrus stood, the offense was unacceptable as much as the record. Hey, he gave EM his shot this year with what he had, so ultimately it was on EM. However, how much the talent and injuries were responsible is debatable. I don't have a problem with changing up the offense and getting rid of Dabs, especially considering we need someone to work with Colt's best abilities.

I think the right side of the line really killed us this year. Did anybody see Ziggy Hood just abuse Poke Chop Sunday? My God that was embarrassing.

It is intriguing thinking what a fresh voice on offense can do with Colt, Hillis, Hardesty, Watson, an improved oline and receiving corps.

Browns President Mike Holmgren says coaching search has already started, but he's not a candidate
by NATE ULRICH on JANUARY 3, 2011 - 12:41 PM
in CLEVELAND BROWNS,MIKE HOLMGREN,NFL
Share

After firing coach Eric Mangini this morning, Browns President Mike Holmgren met with reporters this afternoon. Here are some of the highlights from the press conference.

Holmgren said he met with Mangini this morning and had a good but tough conversation. Holmgren thanked Mangini.
Holmgren said, "We will begin a search for a new coach immediately. … Not locking myself into any timetable."
Holmgren didn't rule out coaching in Cleveland or anywhere else in future, but right now he said he's searching for someone else. He said he's ruling himself out as a coaching candidate at the present time.
Holmgren said he has contacted some coaching candidates based on league protocol and is now waiting for responses.
Holmgren said he won't reveal candidates until they interview. He vows to discuss them after the interviews.
When asked when he decided to fire Mangini, Holmgren said "probably this morning."
Holmgren said college coaches won't be excluded from the search.
Holmgren said the Browns didn't win enough this year, and he wants a winner. He said he tried not to base his decision on any one game. "I have high expectations, and I'm just not gonna settle," he said.
Holmgren said his whole focus is putting together a list of candidates and interviewing them.
Holmgren said he and General Manager Tom Heckert will be the point people during the interview process.
Holmgren said his timetable for hiring a coach won't be affected by the labor situation.
Holmgren said he met with assistant coaches today, told them to take the week off and will meet with them again Monday. They're all under contract with the team, Holmgren said.
Holmgren said he hasn't yet spoken to either Jon Gruden or John Fox. He's not ruling them out as candidates, either.
Holmgren said one of the considerations in the search will be if quarterback Colt McCoy is "the guy."
Holmgren said he won't force a new coach to run a West Coast system, but it will be another factor he considers.
Holmgren on the importance of hiring the right coach: "Huge. I don't want to do this again."
Holmgren said "it certainly would be easier" if new coach runs West Coast system, but he doesn't think it's fair to limit a coach.
Holmgren said he doesn't think the franchise is starting all over, but he understands the "here we go again feeling."
Holmgren said Browns owner Randy Lerner asked him if he wanted to coach again. "Yeah, we did have those conversations," Holmgren said.
Holmgren said "there was nothing good" about the Browns' 41-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the season finale. However, Holmgren said he didn't base his decision on any single game, including the recent blowout loss to the Steelers.
Holmgren said he didn't want to paint himself into a corner in terms of picking an offensive or defensive coach.
Holmgren said there is no budget for the coaching hire. Lerner told him "we are to do what we feel we have to do."
The real tidbit that I wanted to present I heard on the radio (cant post it in writing since the transcript hasnt been released yet)

Apparently Holmgren threw a little jab at Mangini at the end of the press conference

He said something to the likes of- We lost too many close games this year, and I had hoped and will be looking for more pizzaz

Thats right ladies and gentlemen pizzaz

Its like this guy has been reading my posts, LOVE IT. Hopefully we can finally upgrade our skill positions and start playing some championship football.

Whether its Gruden or Morhinwig, Im psyched (Just hope its not FOX)

GO BROWNS!!

Not sure if this was posted but ESPN reported that Browns, Panthers asked permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell

“Probably around noon or 11 o’clock, we sent out request forms for a few guys and we’re waiting for responses,” he added. “My goal is to find exactly the right person for head coach of the Cleveland Browns and will eventually lead us to a championship.”

There are a LOT of good coaches out there.. Top of pecking list for Holmgren will likely be Marty M.. the philli connection is already there with Heckert, Gruden, Mariuchi.. Fox, Marvin Lewis if available (handcuffed by Mike Brown), Cowher, Jeff Fischer, Jim Harbaugh... lots of choices..

No matter who it is.. some will like it, some will hate it..

I don't care..I just want to win.

And there is ONE REASON and ONLY ONE REASON why Mike Holmgren isn't going to coach this team next year. He's not stupid. He sees the lack of talent and knows if he didn't go better than 8-8 next year then people would be questioning HIM and not his choice for HC.

If he ever coaches again, it will be on a team with much more talent than this one. maybe in 2 years when he fires Mohrningweg.

This is due to the racist, insulting "Rooney Rule". If I were a minority I would be truly insulted that I'm being requested to fly around the country to satisfy some stupid rule requiring a minority interview. The stereotypes fall on their own without a stupid rule like this. If Dungy wanted to coach again people would line up at his door for his services.

Golfer, I'm not trying to defend Morningsickness in any way because I don't want him here but to be fair he had most likely the most idiotic GM in the modern history of football making those "flashy" "pizzazy" picks in Detroit.

The battered wife analogy is a generality for Browns fans. In general Browns fans latch on to the slightest glimmer of improvement (I have been just as guilty of it as any Browns fan) and make it out as if a tide is changing, it's getting better, etc. I happen to agree with that analogy as presented by Cherry in looking at fans reaction to the games being "watchable". No one has to agree with it.
