Default Is Perry Fewell the next Leslie Frazier?

For years, thanks to the Rooney rule or maybe, just maybe based on his reputation as a good coach - Leslie Frazier, the new HC of the Minnesota Vikings got a number of interviews for head coaching vacancies around the league. Just last year after Pete Carroll was strongly rumored to be the next HC in Seattle they interviewed Leslie Frazier to comply with the NFL rule requiring teams to interview minorities for coaching vacancies before making the rumors official and publicly announcing Carroll as the next coach of the Seahawks.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Browns are one of at least two teams requesting to interview Giants D-Coordinator Perry Fewell. In other news he also reports the Panthers want to speak to our D-Coordinator about their head coaching vacancy.

From Mary Kay:

CLEVELAND -- The Browns have requested permission from the Giants to interview defensive coordinator Perry Fewell for their head coaching job, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Panthers have also requested permission to interview Fewell, Schefter reported. The Panthers also reportedly will interview Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
Fewell, 48, would satisfy the Rooney Rule stating that teams need to interview at least one minority candidate.
Fewell, who was hired as Giants defensive coordinator a year ago, led his unit to a No. 7 overall ranking in 2010. The defense also led the NFL in forced fumbles and was fifth in sacks.
Fewell went 3-4 as interim coach of the Bills in 2009 when Dick Jauron was fired. He had been the Bills defensive coordinator since 2006. He's also worked for the Jaguars, Rams and Bears.

Reading on twitter that it's an apples/ oranges comparison. Save for....... you know....

Fewell returned the G-men back to that dominating defense that won them a superbowl against a perfect team. 2 DE's with 10+ sacks?? Did we have anyone with 10? I'd like to have Fewell as a DC instead even if it means switching to 4-3. Used to think 4-3 was the lesser D, but we need a pass rush.

I don't think it is an apples/oranges comparison at all. I highly doubt and would bet money he doesn't get a HC position this offseason and the ONLY reason he is getting interviews is because he is a minority candidate. Any one remember Lerner's interview of our former DB coach to satisfy the Rooney rule before Mangini was hired? I can't remember his name now but he is now D-coordinator for Jags. That was a total Rooney rule interview if ever there was one because everyone knew Lerner already had Mangini all but inked to be the next Browns coach.
