I read JJ's assessment... and it's not the same as a lot of pro draftnick's who think the CB class is excellent and clustered with starter types between 20 (Wilson) and early third round.

I really think at a position like corner, we're better served at getting a guy in round 2, not using a #7 on one. That's kinda crazy.

That said, if Dez drops a few spots for not running (all the way to Denver at 10)... and both quarterbacks are gone... and Berry is gone...

Might not be a lot of choices but Haden. Just not a position that can pay back that pick or that money if you ask me (and I know nobody did).

Hold that gag, though: I think Clausen will keep rising. He's bigger than expected, his teammates are coming forward to vouch for him, and he'll put on a good show in his workout. He was also the #1 high school player, so he didn't just get good yesterday.

On Chris Steuber's podcast, Chad Reuter of nfldraftscout said that there's a lot of 2nd/3rd round depth at cornerback, but they're mostly zone corners. That jives well with what JJ was saying: those guys may be very good values for other teams, but they don't provide exactly what the Browns are looking for.

I haven't watched enough of those guys to know whether that's true or not, but it's definitely a view shared by many in the draft geek community.

I agree with Alo, everything I have seen/heard/read is that the depth at CB is adequate, however there seems to be a lot more depth in the 2nd round for a safety, that's why if we went defense I'd rather see haden or Bryant on offense (assuming no QB) and take a safety in the second. (always been a Bryant fan for his talent, not sure if he has the mental makeup/desire to go at #7)

That seems like a logical explanation from someone that's very skilled at putting in the research. Shep's cracking me up the way he's rationalizing corners in this draft all because he doesn't want best player available over Dez (perceived need at WR). That's where you get into trouble as it's been said. We already have the TYPES of corners you can plug into a soft zone so we wouldn't change a thing adding another over a 2nd round gem at Safety like LSU's Chad Jones. I think he offers WAY better value in round 2 than the next Brandon McDonald (whom we didn't need to draft until rd 5 right?)

There's a WONDERFUL article about a WR that GETS it here in Nashville. Perhaps you've heard of Golden Tate? Anyway he was a fromer RB for a local high school (Pope John Paul II ). His take is in today's Tennessean is this: "Don't be staisfied with getting invited to the Combine, don't be satisfied with getting drafted, don't be satisfied with just playing. I want to be great, I want to win the Superbowl and I want to go to the Pro Bowl. I want to be in the Hall of Fame." Does this kid sound like someone rumored to look out of shape a few weeks ago? Does he sound like someone informed by his agent to pull out the old hammy excuse? Heavens no!

Thank God and Pope John Paul II , that his NEXT football team just didn't see running back next to his name and confine him to handoffs. Godzooks! The religious theme here is geared toward my buddy Shep's subconscious and that it's never too late to change one's path or mindset. I've got confidence he's gonna find a better football messiah to follow in round 1 and join us all here on planet earth. He's no dummy - he's just emotionally attached to his opinion of our biggest need over the best player available. That said, I think there's more talented guys with bigger hearts for the next level we can start dedicating threads to. And I think almost every one of them have played more than 2 or 3 games in the last 2 years.
- Tom F. (My HOT Vanderbilt Commodores now have the little brothers of Aaron Rodgers AND Golden Tate. That might get them back to a Bowl Game soon)

Honestly, that's my biggest wish in this draft. Not that Berry drops to #7 to us. It's that Tate drops to us at #38. What a stud, and what's more -- he's all about team. No character concerns and baggage. Mangini and Holmgren type of guy all the way.

If we get Haden AND Tate, that's an unbelievable haul for your first two picks. Two sure-fire starters at key positions.

Shep, we all know you've got a thing for Dez because our passing offense sucks. It does, but we sure as hell don't stop anybody through the air either. It's just as important to stop/contain the passing game as it is to have one. And right now, I believe Haden is a better addition than Bryant for this team. We've seen that Ryan can get guys to hit the opposing QBs, but we have yet to see what he can do when he can allow his safeties some freedom because both his corners can cover.
