My biggest fear remains the total tear-down and rebuild but given that there aren't any Mangini-specific players that won't fit the new system, we should be good to go.
On that note, I suspect we will be looking back and praising many of Mangini's house-cleaning/foundation laying choices next year. He really did the dirty work. Shame he won't be able to try to build on the foundation.
That said, I do think Dabs was a major part of the problem so I'm not heartbroken to see a new offense installed that focuses on McCoy. |
I really like the way you've worded this post Damajuki! The one part I always swim against the currents of popularity with is I don't think Dabs had favorable matchups to exploit once opponents adjusted to Hillis and Watson. Who would be our next goto guy? If one is thinking Cribbs - he had 4 dislocated toes. When healthy, Cribbs pulled New Orleans DBs out of the box after he drew an interference penalty on M Jenkins. And after that, Peyton Hillis started to run wild on them. Can you imagine if this team had an Andre Johnson pulling defenses out of 8-9 men in the box? Hillis probably would have exceeded Arian Foster's numbers.
I have the SAME worry about personnel because we already have a TON of holes to fill in age, injury, wear/tear, and talent to suddenly add new scheme meaning turning over even some of the promising YOUNG guys.
Here's what we need to replace already with an offseason that might not have free agency:
RT, RG, 2 WRs, 3-4 LBs, 1 DE, 1 CB, 1 S, Rumors are saying Steinbach's contract might be too big and same with Dawson. If we change scheme, who knows what happens with Rubin. His performance started strong andd slid when he got less rotation help to keep his legs fresh.
Consider this - what if Dabs was in St Louis and he had a healthy Bradford for 16 weeks with the support of a very well respected defense providing a good margin of error vrs that much easier schedule. Is he an OC with a 7-9 record vrs 5 wins here? Quite honestly, I think so. He always looked better when this team was healthy, McCoy was starting and we were sporting a 5-7 record because of it. To be honest, didn't our offense score enough points to beat the Jets?
It always seems like I'm resistant to firing a HC when I feel the roster had so many holes that prevented the guy from unveiling his schemes with the right chess pieces. Maybe if I didn't see Mangini win 10 games in NY with a healthy QB - I'd be a little less resistant. Shurmur seems like a really hard working guy. I just hope our fanbase and media gives Shurmur more of a chance than they've given other HCs since 1990.
It seems like SOME of the HCs we've hired here were told they could get in the batter's box as long as they put a blindfold on and kept at least 1 hand tied behind their back. What's gonna help Shurmur more than EM is Heckert already has a good draft in hte house the year before he arrives. On top of that, we have more than 4 picks scheduled for this draft. That's important when the teams in our division have been averaging about 9-13 draft picks a year compared to our volume of 1 keeper in 08 and 4 picks scheduled for 09. I can't faily evaluate whoever walks into that sledgehammer.
