| Cleveland Browns could name Rams OC Pat Shurmur head coach as early as Thursday, in talks now, reports say | cleveland.com Cleveland Browns could name Rams OC Pat Shurmur head coach as early as Thursday, in talks now, reports say Published: Wednesday, January 12, 2011, 5:46 PM Updated: Wednesday, January 12, 2011, 9:12 PM ![]() Associated Press/Plain DealerRams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is the leading candidate for the Browns' head coaching job, reports indicate.Updated 8:42 p.m. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns are in contract talks with Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and could name him as their head coach as early as Thursday, league sources told NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora Wednesday night. Shurmur's agent, Bob LaMonte, will come to Cleveland Thursday to finalize the deal, LaCanfora reported. LaMonte also represents Browns President Mike Holmgren, general manager Tom Heckert and executive vice president Bryan Wiedmeier. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier in the evening that the Browns hope to have a deal with Shurmur within the next 48 hours and introduce him as their head coach at a news conference on Friday. Shurmur, who worked with Heckert in Philadelphia for eight of Shurmur's 10 years there, was the first candidate interviewed by the Browns. They also talked to Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. If the Browns can't reach a deal with Shurmur, they could interview former Panthers coach John Fox, Schefter reported. Fox, also a Lamonte client, spent Wednesday interviewing for the Broncos head coach job. Sports Illustrated's Peter King also reported this morning that he was hearing the Browns could hire their man by Thursday, presumably Shurmur. Shurmur has served the last two years as offensive coordinator of the Rams, where he helped develop rookie quarterback Sam Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick, this season. Before that, he was Eagles quarterbacks coach for seven seasons and tight ends coach for three. He's the nephew of the late Fritz Shurmur, Holmgren's defensive coordinator in Green Bay and Seattle. * looks like Holmgren and Heckert know Shurmur VERY well.. The system Holmgren wants is now in place...Now for the coordinators.. I think they will do a good job there as I would imagine Shurmur will make is recommendations..but it will be kicked around with Holmgren and Heckert too. Considering that Holmgren and Heckert have probably forgotten more about football than any of us posters will ever know.. I gotta support the pick of Shurmur.. (At least it was not Gruden..thank you Mike... all the Gruden jockriding was nauseating) Actually I don't care if they hired Crusty the Clown to be head coach...so long as we win.

Oh boy, here we go again. Look, I don't mind guys be given a chance to prove what they can do, but when it comes to a storied franchise like the Cleveland Browns, who have never been to a Super Bowl, and a fan base that want's a championship tomorrow, not good. I am already getting indigestion thinking about the press conference three years from now on how it didn't work out and we wish Mr. Shurmer the best and how we are looking for a new president of football operations

There was some speculation that Mike Holmgren's agent - Bob Lamonte - who represents a number of other coaches, would play a significant role in who was interviewed and got the next job as HC in Cleveland for those conspiracy theorists. Guess who is Shurmur's agent? What a coincidence - Bob Lamonte! I sincerly hope this isn't just about "hooking a brotha up", so to speak and Shurmur ends up being a good coach. |

| http://rumorsandrants.com/2011/01/pa...rowns-job.html [line]-[/line] Like most of you, my first question was “who the hell is Pat Shurmur?” Well, he’s currently the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams, and he’s also apparently emerging as the favorite for the head coaching job in Cleveland. The Browns are (reportedly) currently favoring Shurmur over Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell. Shurmur is part of Browns president Mike Holmgren’s extended coaching tree, as he worked under current Eagles head coach Andy Reid for almost 10 years. Shurmur was the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia for seven seasons, and Donovan McNabb earned three of his five Pro Bowl berths during his tenure. Shurmur just finished his second season as the Rams’ OC and has been praised for his development of rookie Sam Bradford. While the 45-year-old Shurmur certainly comes with some excellent credentials and Holmgren will certainly favor him because of the ties between the two, this hiring couldn’t possibly sit well with Browns fans. The people of Cleveland want a big name, they want Jon Gruden. It doesn’t appear as if Gruden is interested in returning to the league this year. Like Bill Cowher, Gruden is probably just waiting for the perfect situation to emerge. Apparently that’s not Cleveland right now. Possibly as a result of that, several sources are claiming that Shurmur currently holds an almost insurmountable lead in the race for the head gig with the Browns. We’ll keep you updated. [line]-[/line] Some of that sounds encouraging when you factor in that Heckert was the man bringing in the talent at Philly too. Sounds like the Front office and coaching staff will ALL be on the same page this time. |
