I call bullshit on this article. If you believe National Football Post reporter Dan Pompei, new Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur does not exactly trust quarterback Colt McCoy. Seriously. Despite all McCoy did during his rookie year, including wins over New England and New Orleans, does Shurmur really believe he can get someone better next season? New Browns coach Pat Shurmur is saying all the right things about Colt McCoy, but the truth is the team is in no man’s land with the quarterback. They like what he did enough as a rookie to want to see if he can continue to develop, so that could dissuade them from investing a first round pick in another quarterback. But they haven’t seen enough to be certain that McCoy can be the man. The likely scenario is the Browns will have a veteran to compete with McCoy, but if McCoy doesn’t step up they will have wasted another year. Cleveland Browns A.M. Links: Not the real McCoy? Actually I agree. Colt Mccoy is a third round draft pick, and still an unknown quantity. He didn't end the season very well, he could have a sophomore slump. we knows he's accurate and has great poise, but there ARE questions about his arm strength, and it really showed towards the end. Im not saying he's not our guy, because he very well could be, I just think the "SAFE" thing to do, would be to approach this thing like San Diego did, when they had Brees, but drafted Rivers just in case. It would be the smart thing to do..... which is probably why we wont do it

well my thing is, I don't see a 1st round QB out there worth the pick when you do have Colt. Now the veteran back up.....guess whos a FA? That's right Matt Hassleback...

If Colt beats him out great. If they would start out with Hassleback and move Colt in once Hasselback got injured (you know he can't make it 16 games) I can't see where it would hurt. Might just make Colt a bit more hungry. His training period got interupted this year and I'm sure they have a whole lot more to teach him. Either way, learn on the job or learn watching a solid veteran..............all good. But, I honestly think it's his job to lose once they get to training camp. |

The reason I think we should draft another QB at some point, is A... we could end up like the Chargers (thats a good thing BTW, because phillip rivers is awesome) or we could end up like the Bills.... putting everything on Trent Edwards Dont put all of your eggs into a 3rd round QB's basket, not smart. Colt CAN be the guy, but he isnt yet

I would not blow a 1st on a QB this year. If they want to bring in a vet, ok. There are too many holes to fill to go with a QB that early, later rounds ok also.

Shep actually likes McCoy quite a bit. He was looking for something to like and he started writing about it immediately after McCoy's very first start. A lot, actually. Shep thinks McCoy deserves undisputed starter status for one full offseason and one full regular season in Holmgren's WCO, the offense he seems born to run. Sure, he's a little light in the arm, but his improvement arc in that area from training camp to first start was undeniable and it's likely to continue. In today's NFL, especially in a WCO, you don't need a big arm... you need ENOUGH arm. And with McCoy's accuracy, anticipation, and ability to throw on the run and from a variety of "platforms?" Shep thinks McCoy has a chance to be really, really good. |
