He was 10-6 before there was any winning momentum established in NY. Nothing about 10-6 says can't coach good talent surrounding a healthy, decent QB. Aside from that, were you ashamed of what Roth and Benard added in 2009? I think those acquisitions were more than enough to forgive the Veikune thing.
I'll agree that Alex Mack became the only Pro Bowl player ourt of the draft ineritance of 4 picks (thanks Phil Savage - you hooked us up in 08 AND 09). It was NICE to hear 2 different sets of commentators/analysts concluding research without HATE telling us whose perseverence landed Hillis here. Pretty nice OUT from the BQ inheritance right? Where's the love?
Haven't we always grabbed coaches from winning organizations? So is it the coaches or the organization at the top going all the way back to 1990? Have all these HATED Coaches since 1990 hired themselves? Darn it - that would mean placing blame where it belongs in the front office. If you dislike all these head coaches - who put them in front of you? And IF the main reason you don't like Mangini is because of his drafts - WHO was the one who hired him WITHOUT a competant personnel guru already in tact? And just out of curiosity, WHO were the other candidates interviewed?
If people want to think it's as easy as Atlanta - there was no Thomas Dimitroff hired in conjunction with the Head Coach. It was a hollow front office giving Mangini the SAME job that Mike Holmgren got nailed to the cross with in Seattle before he rose from the dead and led them to the Heavens of an AFC Championship. From all I've seen since the 90s, GREAT personnel guys like Bill Polian, Scott Pioli, and whoever does it in Pitt - perpetuates winning for coaches that come from winning organizations. We ALL blamed RAC and he actually went 10-6 in SPITE of Savage and extracting the best football Dumb Ass was ever capable of. This was BEFORE Savage added 2 more dline guys from 4-3 schemes (Rogers & Williams) for his coach that needed 2 gappers. Not saying I want RAC back; but Savage acted like the speed of Reuben Droughns and the panic attacks of Trent Dilfer was to remind RAC of New England from where he saw things. Those 4 years set us back 8 years considering the keepables from the 2008 and 2009 drafts and the age of the team with best work in the rear view mirror.
At least we got Gil Haskell here to advise the coaching staff that rain is wet. Pretty cool shit for a 6-7 figure salary today. |
Yeah, but I also withheld the list of Superstars Eric picked up after trading down to get Mack.
Yes Phil Savage left us on the side of the road without a spare tire and our pants around our ankles, but what did Mangini do with the flare gun he found in the glove box? He pointed it at his head and squeezed the trigger as fast as he could. I mean David Veikune? Really? After the Vernon Gholston project?
So, here's the list: MoMass, Robo, Maiava, Coye Francies, James Davis, Don Carey.
Wowsers.
And despite my feelings on this draft (and Mangini at that time), he turned me into a believer (even though he held on to D

bs). I liked him as a coach.
