Default No OC...

Per Adam Schefter:

Quote:
Former Univ. of Miami OC Mark Whipple has agreed to become Browns QB coach. With Whipple and Pat Shurmer, Browns not likely to hire an OC.

Kinda makes sense to me...

Shurmur is OC

Whipple is QB coach

then we have the guy that everybody calls coach anyway......

PFT seems to think that's the reality of hit: Holmgren isn't going to LITERALLY be the head coach... but in a way, he's the man. He's going to be way more involved.

With two really experienced guys like Jauron and Davis, Holmgren/Shurmur/Whipple don't have to even think about that side of the ball.

We have plenty of cooks in this kitchen for now. The hope is that in a couple years when Holmgren heads out to pasture, Shurmur becomes The Man and he gives up playcalling duties to the next WCO wunderkind.

Could this all be a ruse to go after a coach from the Packers?

Interesting....from wiki:

Quote:
Whipple left college football for a position as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL in 2004 where he was instrumental in the development of Ben Roethlisberger, who in his rookie season became the first NFL quarterback to finish a season undefeated with a 13-0 record in games he started. Roethlisberger later became the youngest starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl. On January 25, 2007, Whipple was let go by new Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and replaced with Ken Anderson. The next day, Whipple was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Yea, exactly....

No offensive coordinator? So our first time HC has to also be our OC. Does anyone else think this sounds like a horrible, horrible idea? I hate to sound trite, but teams have offensive coordinators for a reason. Both the head coach and the offensive coordinator are full time jobs. Both have tons of responsibility. I wouldn't expect anyone except a veritable football genius to take on both jobs with competence.... especially NOT someone who has no prior experience in one job and only 2 years experience in the other. That's too much new ground to cover... to much responsibility and work for just one person, especially at the professional level. Shit, I didn't even like the idea of having Shurmur call plays... this is ridiculous.

IMO, Shurmur pretty much shot himself in the foot when he said that he was going to be doing the playcalling himself. I mean, I could easily see that deter a lot of candidates from wanting the job in the first place. Who wants to work at a job where half your responsibilities are given to someone else? Where you draw up the offensive playbook, but have to watch someone else learn and use it for you? Someone who may not share the same philosophies as you and sure as hell wont know the playbook as well as the person who created it?

Obviously I can't speak for football coaches everywhere but that sounds like a load of crap to me. I HATE it when my brother plays a piano song I composed and plays it in a different way than I intended it to be played. Its my creation... I have a set idea of how the song should sound. So, I can understand if that turned potential OCs off, cause it sure as hell would turn me off. Also, we're the freakin' browns. It's not like we're a hot-shot team that people are lining up to coach for. So, I can't really say I'm THAT surprised we've had difficulty getting an OC.

...

Looking over what we've done after firing Mangini, it sounds like we're setting ourselves up for failure here. I mean, there's just been a lot of questionable decisions made by the browns this offseason:

  • The hiring of Shurmur as our Head Coach, a no-name OC with no prior HC experience...
  • Letting go of Brad Seely, one of the best ST coaches in the league...
  • The hiring of Dick Jauron, a conservative 4-3 DC, which will lead to a complete reboot on defense and roster turnover...
  • Letting our first-time HC also call plays, which is IMO too much responsibility for most people, let alone someone with no prior experience...
  • And now we're not even hiring an OC, so Shurmur has to learn how to be a head coach AND retain all his jobs and responsibilities as an offensive coordinator at the same time.

None of these moves fill me with confidence. Not in the slightest bit. There is nothing on this list that jumps out at me for being a smart hire or good judgment call... nothing that makes me think we're going to be a better team than last year. On this list is just a bunch of question marks. A bunch of "maybe this could work out" and "maybe he's going to be a great hire".... just possibilities and potential, nothing more.

.... FFS, we have freakin' Gil Haskell on the payroll and in Berea. Just give him the damn OC job already if we're not hiring anyone. I don't care if he's freakin' 67.... it would still be better than having no OC.

Ask Zorn how that worked out for him.

If shurmur does hire a GB or stooler assistant great, however if he doesnt Mr. Whipple has experience as an OC at the collegiate level so my guess is shurmur may groom whipple into his image of our OC over time..

As far as having confidence in what this regime is doing, the more browns fans that are not confident the more proof it is to me that the regime is making the right moves... hehehehe
