Believe it or not, they made a HUGE deal out of Chad showing up 15 pounds overweight to the first day of football practice last year; a couple months after he came in as a relief pitcher to close the side in the 7th inning of College World Series. Right there shows me he offers the SAME flexible greatness in baseball that he does in football. Once it was time to focus on football for the next 5 months - you saw the outcomes on the highlights you shared of him. I remembered telling you my concern about CJ on TBB was I heard his first love was baseball. When you told me you heard otherwise - I began to get really excited about him.
I honestly don't care how many reps he gets on the bench press because he's got ideal size at 6'3" and 221 pounds that an Earl Thomas lacks at 185 pounds. He's also a terrific punt return guy when he's in shape durign the season as we saw. I'd rather have Chad slip because of the Combines. However, if he didn't make the NFL aware of what sport he was choosing - it's gonna lengthen the slide.
There's more to a guy's character than a well rehearsed interview. How many teams got fooled with that over the years? Tim Tebow was handing out Communion at his interviews and talkign about missions to help the less fortunate. That's a wonderful interview after he aced the workouts. That said, he STILL has to prove he can perform the #1 job responsibility of an NFL QB. That's throw strikes on center stage vrs NFL closing pseeds and pass rushes. I hope he succeeds. With CJ - I can't count that he's great at baseball and football against his character if he chooses football.
I've worked in an NFL strength and conditioning program that deemed it important for players to take some time away from the grinde after the season ends and report back for offseason work on March 1st. Many guys workout at home in Jan and Feb but some wait if they had alot of wear and tear. In strength and conditioning there are periodization models utilized that emphasize some degree of rest and recuperation between extended conditioning periods. THIS is what I see as important for a kid like CJ. YES, he's shown up 15 pounds overweight to his football practice but his actions busting tail from that day forward had a really talented player ready to be their playmaker on defense and STs in a pretty respectable conference. I give him different latitude than I give others because he's got the competitive drive to be a multiple role player his teams need him to be. Nothing about that epitomizes lazy.
