I haven't lifted in months and I'm quite sure I can lift my body weight more than nine times.

Lack of preparation indeed. Which is odd because everyone talks about what a smart kid he is.
This doesn't sound good:

S Chad Jones, LSU

Having stood out on the diamond as an outfielder at LSU and gone on record saying baseball is his first passion, Jones had some questions to answer during interviews about how he would handle adversity if his football career did not go his way, and he did nothing to squash perceptions that he cannot be trusted to maximize his talent, as his interview was described as one of the worst of the allotted 60 that every team is given. Not only did he appear dispassionate in interviews, he clocked in the high 4.5s in the 40 — slower than expected — and only repped 225 pounds nine times at 221 pounds, poor for a safety of his size irrelevant of whether baseball has affected his conditioning.

Believe it or not, they made a HUGE deal out of Chad showing up 15 pounds overweight to the first day of football practice last year; a couple months after he came in as a relief pitcher to close the side in the 7th inning of College World Series. Right there shows me he offers the SAME flexible greatness in baseball that he does in football. Once it was time to focus on football for the next 5 months - you saw the outcomes on the highlights you shared of him. I remembered telling you my concern about CJ on TBB was I heard his first love was baseball. When you told me you heard otherwise - I began to get really excited about him.

I honestly don't care how many reps he gets on the bench press because he's got ideal size at 6'3" and 221 pounds that an Earl Thomas lacks at 185 pounds. He's also a terrific punt return guy when he's in shape durign the season as we saw. I'd rather have Chad slip because of the Combines. However, if he didn't make the NFL aware of what sport he was choosing - it's gonna lengthen the slide.

There's more to a guy's character than a well rehearsed interview. How many teams got fooled with that over the years? Tim Tebow was handing out Communion at his interviews and talkign about missions to help the less fortunate. That's a wonderful interview after he aced the workouts. That said, he STILL has to prove he can perform the #1 job responsibility of an NFL QB. That's throw strikes on center stage vrs NFL closing pseeds and pass rushes. I hope he succeeds. With CJ - I can't count that he's great at baseball and football against his character if he chooses football.

I've worked in an NFL strength and conditioning program that deemed it important for players to take some time away from the grinde after the season ends and report back for offseason work on March 1st. Many guys workout at home in Jan and Feb but some wait if they had alot of wear and tear. In strength and conditioning there are periodization models utilized that emphasize some degree of rest and recuperation between extended conditioning periods. THIS is what I see as important for a kid like CJ. YES, he's shown up 15 pounds overweight to his football practice but his actions busting tail from that day forward had a really talented player ready to be their playmaker on defense and STs in a pretty respectable conference. I give him different latitude than I give others because he's got the competitive drive to be a multiple role player his teams need him to be. Nothing about that epitomizes lazy.

Problem is that NFL scouts weren't convinced by his interviews at the combine that he was all in on football.

I believe that mid 90 MPH fastball may be his biggest foe come April. Personally, I love that his stock may drop. Makes him a more viable option for us later in the draft.

Yup - Good point Ytown! Sometimes you HAVE to wonder if some of the teams drafting later in round 1 are the infamous scouts speaking up about his unclarity of pro sport choice. If you're not interested in the NFL do you show up to be poked and prodded and then bust your tail sweating for something you're not interested in? His playing weight was 233 pounds from publication I have and he weighed in at Indy at 221 pounds.

I remembered the year when one of these scouts said their research showed them AP was to have season ending shoulder surgery before he would suit up for his first rookie start. Next thing I know an obvious #1 overall slides down to Minnesota, who wasted no time to pick AP. All of a sudden, there was no season ending surgery and I've seen a productive RB that hasn't missed many/any starts.

It would be nice if someone did some thorough research on Chad because Eric Berry won't be available at #7 and Jones could be had in round 2 or even 3 if he slides. I'm starting to think we'll trade down and snag a dlinemen like Dan Williams who dominated reputable prospects at the Senior Bowl. Brandon Graham is a tweener that also dominated Senior Bowl opponents on the edge. If anyone caught that game, they'll know why I was impressed by each kid.

We're VERY thin on the dline if someone gets injured. The NEW staff was just starting to make Corey Williams look like he belonged in our rotation. It was if he got the 3-4 explained to him in English for the first by Bryan Cox. Okay Cox English includes f-bombs but it lights fannies when necessary.

I definately don't think that's a bad idea to trade down and draft D. Willliams or B. Graham. I think either of these two picks would be good pick ups espcially Williams if we trade Rodgers.

Tom, Earl Jones is 5'10" and 206. And in today's NFL, when safeties are cover guys, he's quite a bit more ideal than anybody this side of Eric Berry. Some would say including Eric Berry.

I would think if the Brown's are looking Safety then they would be looking for the type of safety that is also a good cover guy like Berry and Earl Thomas. both those guys could move to the slot in the nickle. I really don't know if Chad Jones is that type of guy.

Here's a report from LSU's pro day:

Quote:
Unlike his performance in Indianapolis, safety Chad Jones looked terrific in drills today displaying good footwork and lateral movement skills. Sources told us Jones, “looked like a real centerfielder.”
On the other hand, he only upped his bench total from 9 to 11, and he reportedly didn't improve upon his okay workout numbers in Indy.
