Potential No. 1 overall pick Bowers had knee surgery NFLDraftScout.com Feb. 15, 2011
Potential No. 1 overall pick Da'Quan Bowers had surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus and his availability for next week's Scouting Combine is unclear.
Bowers, a junior, led the nation in sacks with 15.5 in 2010. He's the top-ranked defensive end by NFLDraftScout.com and grew up in Carolina Panthers' country. He's considered one of a handful of realistic options for the Panthers to draft first overall in April.
According to the
Charlotte Observer, citing Bowers' high school coach, Bowers underwent the arthroscopic procedure at the end of the season after the Tigers' loss to South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst, said of Bowers: "Though surgery for a partially torn meniscus is not typically considered an injury that could derail a prospect's stock, the timing couldn't be worse for Bowers. The Clemson defensive end may have led the nation in sacks, but some question whether he has the explosive burst to replicate that success in the NFL. If he's unable to perform at his best in shuttle drills, the 40-yard dash and the jumps (broad jump, vertical) at the Combine, he'll be losing out on an opportunity to ease these concerns."
Clemson's Pro Day was originally scheduled for March 11, but the school's site currently lists the date as "
TBD." However, he is reportedly training to participate in at least some of the drills at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The event runs from Feb. 24-March 1.
