Tom, if you wanna scare the shit out of all of us, just list the top 10 WRs OR pure pass rushers over the past decade. Neither is very good, but WR is a little better because of some stars (Andre, Calvin, Fitzy, Crabtree, Braylon). There just isn't much from the pass rushers.

However, a lot of good pass rushers have been picked between 11 and 13, which is just a bizarre anomaly in my logical mind. Ware is the shining example. I say we rank Quinn 12th on our board and take him sixth. Not sure if that shakes the hex or not (!).

DTs suck worse than anything up high. Lately QBs have been pretty damn consistently good and I don't really know why. At some point, though, you have to avoid superstition and realize no previous pick really has bearing on the success of THIS pick. You have to trust what you see.

Sobo has an article about it today and I feel very strongly that it's true: This league is becoming about passing the ball and rushing the passer. Part of that is by design, by the rules. The other part is just logic: A pass rush covers all the receivers; a "lockdown corner" covers one. Great quarterbacks in space age offenses can find an open receiver given a reasonable amount of time. You may take away our #1... so we'll throw a lot of balls to Woodhead or Welker or Dallas or Tamme or Jemarcus or Jordy or somebody else. No worries.

Locking down on a first option may work against a flustered youngster... but not against the growing number of "great" quarterbacks in this league. Good luck with that. As Grossi put it, the Bengals have had the best set of corners in the AFC North for several years now. Not the Steelers or Ravens... the Bengals. How's it worked out for them?

And so the Browns of 4-12, 5-11, and 5-11 have consistently done two things poorly: Pass the football and rush the passer. It's a recipe for consistent suckassedness. We have to attack both as priorities 1 and 1A.

But these are the Browns and because I'm a megalomaniac, I believe they were created to frustrate me and bring balance to my life somehow. So they'll probably draft a corner and a 3-tech 1/2.

Here's the research you should have done before correcting me Solon; and I'll even be nice enough to cut and paste it for you:

Robaire Smith was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round (197th overall) in the 2000 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, he played in eight games, recording six tackles, 2.5 sacks and one pass defensed. in 2001, he played in ten games, registering 16 tackles and two sacks. Smith signed with the Houston Texans in 2004 as an unrestricted free agent.[1] He was cut on September 3, 2006, and re-signed with the Titans, two years after leaving, on September 6, 2006. He signed a contract as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns on March 16, 2007.

My uncertainty about Robaire wasn't IF he played in Houston - it was what scheme they were using when he was there. I went back and edited it since I just remembered that's where we got Todd Granthom from. I was HOPING our Texas resident woulda been a little more helpful.

From the 3 guides and videos: Quinn is REALLY quick off the ball and I like his engine. I wish he got to show the rest of America more than a 1 year body of work to silence blowhard critics like your buddy Flugel. Worth noting: I didn't think Julio Jones and AJ Green belonged in the same sentence before the 2010 season. After I saw enough of Julio Jones in 2010 - WOW did that ever change! He improved his game considerably in one of the most competitive conferences in college football. So much so IMO that I shared a youtube video of him in one of the WR threads about 4-7 weeks before the combines. If Julio didn't play in 2010, I can assure you I wouldn't have the same intrigue and excitement about him potentially being on our doorstep at #6.

Solon, when my workout video hits the stores - I want to know you're gonna buy it. It's called FLABS, which is an acronym for Flugel's Abs.

Good point! Just look at our hated rival in Pittsburgh that's been to 3 Superbowls in the last 6 years. They have terrific pass rushers off the edge year after year; but NONE of these guys were ever as urgent as round 1: Jason Gildon 3rd round, Joey Porter 3rd round, Greg Lloyd 6th round, James Harrison undrafted, and LaMarr Woodley 2nd round (pick 46 overalll).

The ONLY first round pass rusher off the edge I can recall them drafting in the last 25 years or so was Huey Richardson out of Florida. And he was terrible.

That doesn't mean the position isn't important as much as it means knowing where, when and how to shop for a pass rusher. Pitt got burned by Richardson and fared well after round 1. Therefore, they continue to let everyone else swarm the highly hyped while ther Woodleys of the world keep landing on the doorstep at bargain shopping prices.

Relating this to our draft ahead - we can STILL land a good DE after round one. Heckert landed Trent Cole in round 5 of a draft that wasn't nearly as deep at DE as this draft is supposed to be. I'm looking at supply and demand of the WR and DE position to where I'm VERY comfortable with AJ Green or Julio Jones at #6 and dline as often as necessary over the course of our next 7 picks.

LOL! No, I know what happened. You had another HOT date so you were in that same kind of worry-hurry that you had working on the night of the fantasy football draft. You better clear your schedule this year.

Good idea - he'd be terrific! Can you believe we blew our first round pick on Wimbley when we could have had Woodley near the top of round 2?

Yeah, having both Wimbley and Benard right now would be farging sweet. Then Roth and Mitchell for the LDE? We'd be set.
