Idaho QB Enderle attracts a crowd at pro day

By Gil Brandt |

Published: March 11th, 2011

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz and Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese were among 10 talent evaluators on hand Friday for the University of Idaho’s pro day.

They braved temperatures in the low 40s to watch quarterback Nathan Enderle and nine other NFL prospects work out on FieldTurf.

Enderle, 6-foot-4 1/4 and 234 pounds, clocked 5.13 in the 40-yard dash, had a 25-inch vertical leap, 8-5 broad jump, 4.41 short shuttle and a three-cone drill time of 7.08. He ran through position drills with two quarterbacks coaches for about 30 minutes and had a pretty good workout.

Other prospects of note:

Tight end Daniel Hardy (6-3 7/8, 239) ran 4.78 in the 40, had a 30 1/2 vertical leap, 8-10 broad jump, 4.35 short shuttle and 7.19 in the three-cone drill.

Defensive back Shiloh Keo (5-11 3/8, 216) clocked the 40 in 4.66, had a 34-inch vertical leap, 9-9 broad jump, and stood on his short shuttle and bench press results from last month’s NFL Scouting Combine. He was a top performer in both events.

Running back Deonte Jackson (5-8, 193) ran the 40 in 4.52, had a 36 1/2 vertical leap, 10-foot broad jump, 4.16 short shuttle, 7.03 in the three-cone drill and completed 20 bench press repetitions.

Defensive end Aaron Lavarais (6-2 1/4, 249) was a defensive end at Idaho but worked out at outside linebacker for NFL scouts. He ran the 40 in 4.62, had a 35-inch vertical leap, 9-7 broad jump, 4.09 short shuttle, 7.16 in the three-cone drill and chalked up 22 bench press reps.

Oregon State’s Rodgers invokes Sanders at workout

By Gil Brandt |

Published: March 11th, 2011

It can ever be a bad thing to be compared to Barry Sanders — not even in the smallest capacity.

So it goes without saying the fact that Oregon State RB Jacquizz Rodgers invoked the Hall of Famer’s name after the Beavers’ pro day held on March 11 says something about his potential.

After Rodgers (5-foot-6 3/8, 197 pounds) worked out in front of 25 teams last week, he was described as showing “Barry Sanders-type of quickness,” according to one observer. Rodgers certainly played like him last season, rushing for 1,184 yards and 14 touchdowns.

For his workout, he did all of the NFL Scouting Combine drills again, improving on his 4.56-second 40-yard dash time in Indy. Rodgers ran it this time in 4.49 and 4.51. He also had a 4.29 short shuttle and 7.33 3-cone drill. He followed that up with a 34-inch vertical jump and 9-8 broad jump.

If you ask me, I think this kid could fit well in a multiple-back system.

Notable among the other 10 guys who worked outside on FieldTurf:

C Alex Linnenkohl (6-1 7/8, 297) — He broad jumped 7-7 and benched 225 pounds 31 times, but stood on everything else at the combine.

DE/OLB Gabe Miller (6-3 ¼, 250) — He was not at the combine. He ran 4.61 and 4.63 40s, had a 36-inch vertical, a 9-6 broad jump, a 4.22 short shuttle, a 6.93 3-cone drill, and did 33 bench press reps. With his performance, he probably vaulted himself to become a lower-round pick.

Stephen Paea. Remember him? The guy who set the combine bench press record with 49 reps? He couldn’t work out because of an undisclosed injury, but will do so at a date to be determined.

LSU’s Peterson generates No. 1-worthy buzz
Posted: March 14th, 2011 | Gil Brandt
CB Patrick Peterson had a workout worthy of a No. 1 pick during LSU's pro day on Monday. (Matthew Emmons/US Presswire)

As the whispers of Patrick Peterson being worth the No. 1 overall draft pick get louder, teams are definitely taking notice of LSU’s standout cornerback — beginning with, who else, but the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers, who hold the top selection, made their presence known at LSU’s pro day, sending head coach Ron Rivera and general manager Marty Hurney to watch the Tigers’ workout Monday indoors on FieldTurf.

In fact, all 32 teams were present in some form, including Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert, Saints coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis, and Cardinals general manager Rod Graves.

After watching Peterson put on a show again on Monday (as he did at the NFL Scouting combine), the Denver Broncos, who pick No. 2 overall, have scheduled a private workout with Peterson at a date and time to be determined.

You can’t go wrong with Peterson. Whoever drafts this guy is getting a stud. A lot of people call him the safest player in the draft, and I would agree with that. He has size (measured in at 6-foot-0 3/8, 218 pounds on Monday), he has height, he has return ability. He basically has everything it takes to be a shutdown corner, which everybody is looking for in today’s NFL.

Peterson just might end up being the first defensive back ever taken No. 1 overall. He’s definitely worth it.

Among the other notables to work out at LSU’s pro day:

LB Kelvin Sheppard (6-2, 250) — He ran 4.70 and 4.71 seconds in the 40-yard dash, and kept his numbers on everything else at the combine. He also re-did the 3-cone drill in 7.25 seconds. Sheppard is an ideal inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.

DL Drake Nevis (6-0 5/8, 298) — He ran 4.92 twice in the 40 and did the 3-cone drill in 7.76, which was not as good as his combine time. He also did position drills.

WR Terrence Toliver (6-4, 211) — He ran 4.54 in the 40 and pulled his right hamstring, but before that he had a vertical jump of 33 ½ inches and did a 10-2 broad jump. Somehow, Toliver recovered enough to do position workouts, and he was outstanding. He caught everything thrown his way and put on a great, gutsy performance.

DL Pep Levingston (6-3 ¾, 286) — He ran 4.92 and 4.89 in the 40 and 7.39 in the 3-cone drill. He had a 31-inch vertical, but kept his broad jump and short shuttle from the combine. He bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times and did position workouts.

RB Stephen Ridley (5-11 3/8, 230) — He ran 4.67 and 4.66 40s, a 4.17 short shuttle and a 6.78 3-cone drill. He didn’t do the vertical or the broad jump, and did 21 lifts in the bench press.

To find Peterson's place in the top five, I'd look closest at teams that have neither a stud punt returner or a clear-cut lockdown corner. Teams that have both? I'd eliminate (Haden/Cribbs).

Sounds like he's a lock Top Five, which really works for Cleveland. Push the WRs and DEs downward. My fear is that Bowers is hurt and Quinn may not be a #6 pick, so it comes down to Green or one of the DTs.

For me, that's Green by miles. But there's a lot of time left.

Gabbert shows off tomorrow... and he indirectly means a ton to the Browns, either by pushing down the other prospects (hopefully by becoming a Bengal) or as trade bait.

I had no idea he scored a freaking 42 on the Wonderlic. That's absolutely insane. He's fascinating because the production isn't dazzling... but guys who go 6'4" and 235 and run 4.6 are rare enough. But Gabbert aslo undeniably has a big-time NFL arm, he's crazy smart off AND on the field, and he meets really well.

It's great draft debate stuff, production versus potential. He won at Missouri and has some great tape showing his ability to manipulate the defense and make serious NFL throws... but he didn't fill the stat sheet.

Anyway, good stuff from Banks.

Kerrigan shows why he could be first-round steal

By Gil Brandt |

Published: March 15th, 2011

If you didn’t know already, this is a deep draft class along the defensive line. So finding a good one shouldn’t be too difficult.

That being said, since Purdue DE Ryan Kerrigan is rated below many of the same players at his position, whoever ends up with him in the middle to late first round could wind up with a steal of a pick.

Kerrigan (6-foot-4, 274 pounds) proved that on March 11 at the Boilermakers’ pro day with a solid workout in front of 23 teams indoors on FieldTurf.

Jacksonville Jaguars defensive line coach Joe Cullen was on hand to work out Kerrigan. Surprise, surprise, Pat Kirwan, in his latest mock draft, has Kerrigan going to Jacksonville with the 16th pick. He might be on to something.

That would be a great value for the Jaguars, who could use a good edge rusher. Kerrigan led the Big Ten last season in combined hurries and knockdowns with 24.5, two ahead of Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt, one of the players generally rated ahead of him. Kerrigan is a guy who makes things happen.

Other notables to work out:

OLB Jason Werner (6-3 5/8) — He ran 4.50 seconds twice in the 40-yard dash, 4.39 in the short shuttle and 6.80 in the 3-cone drill. He had a 31-inch vertical and a 9-9 broad jump, and completed 28 bench-press repetitions at 225 pounds. He did position workouts.

TE Kyle Adams (6-4 ¾, 257) — He ran 4.85 and 4.83 40s, 4.35 short shuttle and 7.10 3-cone drill. … He had a 33-inch vertical and a 10-2 broad jump, and he did 24 strength lifts.

RB Dan Dierking (5-9 ¼, 194) — He ran 40s of 4.53 and 4.55, a 4.19 short shuttle and a 6.84 3-cone drill. He had a 33-inch vertical and a 9-6 broad jump, and he completed an impressive 31 bench presses. He is an outstanding special teams player.

Mayock and the rest of NFLN said Ponder had a terrific workout, capping a pretty amazing draft season run. He may have passed Locker, in fact. Mayock said the healthy arm wasn't just okay, but above average... and you figure in that the kid's a great athlete who graduated in 2.5 years and got a 38 on his preseason Wonderlic (don't know his final)... and that he clearly "looks the part" of a pro style quarterback... and he's probably into the first round now. They especially like him for a WCO team.

Interesting observation: They all agreed off some "trust me" intel that the only way Newton goes top five is if he goes first... otherwise, it might be 12th. But Gabbert's basement is 5 to the Cardinals and a good workout tomorrow probably cements him at #1 overall. They all agreed that the Panthers must and will take a QB.

I'm sticking with Gabbert, Dareus, Peterson, Fairley/Green, Miller, Green/Fairley.

K-State’s Coffman has lofty shoes to fill

By Gil Brandt |

Published: March 14th, 2011
Carson Coffman took over for Josh Freeman as Kansas State’s starting quarterback after Freeman was drafted No. 17 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009. And although Coffman didn’t have the same impact with the Wildcats as Freeman had to make himself a first-round pick, he’ll get his chance to make an NFL roster next season.

Coffman highlighted Kansas State’s pro day Monday indoors on FieldTurf before 15 teams present.

Coffman, whose brother is Bengals TE Chase Coffman and whose father, Paul, was an NFL tight end from 1978 to ’87, had himself a nice performance. He measured in at 6-foot-2¾ and 215 pounds, and ran 4.75 and 4.73 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He had a 9-5 broad jump and a 29½-inch vertical jump, and ran a 7.15 three-cone drill and 4.33 short shuttle.

Coffman had a scripted workout and performed well, probably well enough to get himself signed as a free agent. He’ll have some inherent expectations given his background, but we’ll see how he performs at the next level.

Wilson leads Montana with strong pro day

By Gil Brandt |

Published: March 14th, 2011

Montana held its pro day Monday outdoors on FieldTurf with 10 teams present to watch the seven players who worked out.

No doubt, DB James Wilson has the athletic talent to be an NFL player. Wilson (5-foot-11, 193 pounds) ran 4.52 and 4.49 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 4.28 in the short shuttle and 6.83 in the 3-cone drill. He also had a 9-11 broad jump and a 35-inch vertical to go along with 19 bench-press repetitions at 225 pounds.

Now, he had a very good workout. But Wilson was jailed for two years until he was acquitted of murder in a 2007 shooting, which will probably keep him from being drafted. So if he gets a chance as an undrafted free agent, his success will depend on his ability to stay out of trouble.
Others who worked out:

RB Chase Reynolds (5-11 ¼, 201) — He ran 4.61 and 4.59 40s, a 4.26 short shuttle and a 6.78 3-cone drill. He had a 36-inch vertical, a 9-6 broad jump and did eight bench-press repetitions. He’s pretty good for a product of eight-man football in high school.

Gary Wagner (6-1, 194), a QB out of Carroll College, ran 4.74 and 4.79 40s. He had a 9-5 broad jump and 31-inch vertical. Wagner also posted a 4.31 short shuttle and 6.88 3-cone drill. He really threw the ball well.

Back to Ponder for a sec, one of my favorite prospects: Gabbert and Ponder scored 42 and 35 on their Wonderlics, which is reinforced by the way they meet and work the board. Just as Gabbert showed he can freeze a safety or a linebacker... Ponder did it in the Senior Bowl game. These are two guys who get it and look the part, as NFLN likes to say. You can visualize them being very good NFL quarterbacks. Both are plenty athletic and mobile, able to run 4.6s, jump, etc.

But to reinforce the "athletes with arms" tags, Locker and Newton got 21 and 20 on their Wonderlics. No, those aren't horrifying scores... but they are a little weak, given the preparation kids do these days. While Mort is saying teams only get concerned if the score is under 20, McShay says GMs tell him that a quarterback should get over 25, given the amount of "book learning" he'll have to do.

The Bengals showed extra special attention to Ponder, sending their HC and new OC Jay Gruden, who will implement a WCO, perfect for Ponder. It's looking less likely that Ponder would be there at 36 (Jacksonville and Seattle both like him a lot), so the Bengals would have to trade up.

Mallett is rebounding a little. NFLN says he's always been a model citizen on the field, meaning he didn't miss practices and he's a hard worker. He did well at the board and played in a pro style. And as Charles Davis said, the arm is sure as hell seductive. The kid can flat out throw a football. Davis believes Mallett could very well be a better pro than Newton.

The Bengals seem like a team that knows Gabbert will be gone and Newton would be a reach.
