I did. Good catch. I have some errors. My proofreading at 2am just isn't what it used to be. As for the Browns picks, I'm sure we'll end up drafting more DL, but I couldn't pass up Young and Lockette at those positions. I could see us passing up Young for a pass rusher in round two, but if Lockette is there in round 4, it'd be hard to pass on him, IMO. |

Obviously sort of the polar opposite of what I think would make the Browns a better team... but if the Browns did do something like this, I'd love to be proven an outright idiot. I think the result of this would be a bad passing offense in a league where only teams with great passing offenses are really relevant. I think McCoy might struggle and we'll start looking at Luck, because we'll be a Have Not team again. I think we'll lack a serious pass rush, the other vital element for winning in today's league. I think we'll displace the Bengals for having the best corners in the AFC North... and that's gonna have to be our claim to fame until we build a top 10 passing game and get after the passer. |

Here's Steve Wyche's take from a couple weeks ago: But here's the catch: As good as Peterson is, and as much as he can help a team in the secondary and as a returner, he still plays cornerback. Don't get it twisted, every team wants a great cornerback -- or two or three. However, as much as a great cornerback like the Jets' Darrelle Revis can impact a game, they can also be taken out of it. This isn't my philosophy. This is what coaches and players say. Offenses can avoid elite cornerbacks by running the ball or throwing to other areas of the field. Sure, that makes it a 10-on-10 game. But if an offense feels their 10 is better than yours, they'll take it. The same philosophy holds for a stud return specialist. Just kick it away from him and you can limit his effectiveness. An AFC offensive player told me during the season that having to game plan and play against a dominant edge rusher (outside linebacker or end) is far more complicated and challenging than facing a great defensive back. The evidence goes beyond just a player's take. Front seven defenders are valued more than cornerbacks. __________________________________________________ ______________________ I'll add: An elite corner shuts down 1 of as many as 5 receivers on a pass play, or 20%. A pass rusher is going after the only quarterback, essentially shutting down all five of those receivers. A corner is limited in what he can do. The popular theory has it that the four "premium positions" are QB, LT, RDE/3-4 rush backer, and LCB (or #1 corner). I think the latter is fourth of four and so does most of the NFL... and we already have that one. Last edited by Brown Warrior; 04-06-2011 at 07:01 PM. |

Ha! Another CB with a top 10 pick. Gotta love us Browns fans. No way Heckert and Holmgren do this. A.J Green Julio Jones or any of the top D lineman in that order. Be logical DaBrowns.

That's cliche talk, Dab. Having the best player at any position is a good thing... but it's not going to win you all that much unless they're at the right positions. Obviously quarterback is #1 and #2 isn't clearly visible if you're standing by it. Having Tom Brady makes a lot of personnel issues go away, including not having "elite" linemen or WRs or RBs. Or pass rushers. Or a very good defense. All true of last year's Patriots. Brady is that good. He's a HOFer. Hell, Elway carries a mediocre team for a decade before he had some help and could win it all. Watch the Colts without Manning... they're laughable. It's like Phil Jackson says, "Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant made me a genius." Tom Brady's made a lot of geniuses in Foxboro. You really can't cornerback your way to a championship. You have to have a top 10-15 passing game and a disruptive pass rush. No shortcuts. You just gotta get those things. So passing on Quinn, Green, or Jones... or Aldon Smith... wouldn't make any sense, especially when we already have Joe Haden as our #1 corner. |

See, the idea of drafting back to back top 10 corners is why "pure BPA" doesn't exist. Really crazy shit would happen. You'd have a team lacking a serious WR or pass rusher... but fielding really super-duper corners for a few years until you can only pay one of them. Remember the Bengals. |

But Julio Jones is a Braylon clone in my eyes, although I think he'll fare a bit better in his career. Robert Quinn isn't a Top 10 pick. He's talented, but not that good. Watching more game tape, I'm actually less impressed. If we trade down into the teens, then it's a different story. |
