Default Statistics and Needs

I was perusing stats for a bit and found a few things that surprised even me. Here are some interesting numbers by the Browns defense:

Points allowed: 13th
QBR against: 17th
INTs: 8th
YPC against: 12th (8th before Fujita went down)
Sacks: 25th

It's a testament to the Browns' DBs that they were ranked 8th in picks and 17th in QBR defense... considering they were only 25th in sacks. It seems pretty damn clear which area we should shore up to have the most impact.

We need to seriously focus on rushing the passer. We did everything else average or better.

Now for the Browns' pass offense, the thing they are the very worst at (by far):

Yards: 29th
QBR: 27th
TDs: 30th

Those are not misprints. In a league where nothing matters more than passing the ball well... passing the ball is the one thing the Browns do worse than anything else.

On defense, the worst thing we do is rush the passer. On offense, the worst thing we do is pass. We are literally the polar opposite of the Packers. We are in fact the anti-Packers.

The goal is pretty damn clear: Pass the ball better... and rush the passer better.

I don't need read stats for this. The first thing that comes to mind is watching Michail Turner plowing over us all gaining massive yards on very few carries to see where our needs lie....Right up the gut... RUN D RUN D RUN D..

Ok..i checked real quick memory check.. since that game came to mind.... 140 yards on only 19 carries.. OUCH.. can you say front 7.

I guess looking at needs..from what I remember and seeing what other people post.. I guess we just still suck cuz it seems we need guys everywhere.. Pass offense. run defense, pass defense. That does not leave much else that looks good.

Wait, Sez... we were 12th in YPC against. That's a hard, cold fact. We were actually 8th before Fujita went down. In other words, run defense was the thing we did better than anything before he went out.

That said, Fujita and Roth couldn't rush the passer... but they sure as hell could stop the run. Unfortunately, it's 2011 and pass defense is gonna mean a lot more than run defense. And rushing the passer is the key to pass defense.

And rushing the passer is what we do worst. See what I mean? The things that mean the most are the things we do the worst. No big shock that we've been 4-12, 5-11, and 5-11.

SHEP: You can point out stats all day long.. But you cannot change what I saw with my own eyes.. When I see RB's running through holes the size of lake Erie.. it's hard to ignore that... you cannot throw stats at me and tell me we were good against the run..sorry.. I saw this with my own eyes....

Just because it was EASY to pass on us.. and teams may not have run up huge rushing stats. (because they may not have needed to) .does not equate to a good run defense...Most of these teams had they chose to could have run up huge rushing stats..but they passed on us.. so having good rush stats in and of themself does not make us a good team vs the run.

Stats can say whatever you want them to. ..it just depends on what your looking for.. That is why I trust my eyes more than statistics. Yes the pass rush was bad too.. but you cannot tell me based upon what you saw our run Defense was good. Do you remember Maurice Jones Drew???? He made our RUN D Look like pee wee league..and was the reason we lost that game..

Shep your also throwning out stats for an offense and defense that no longer exist.. so they are pretty useless. What matters is getting players to run the new offense and defense that can run block tackle and catch the ball.. and execute the new schemes.

The stats might mean something if they were running the same defense and had the same personnel coming back. I don't think we will be to many exotic Ryan schemes this year. Besides, teams ran all over us and we couldn't get them off the field to get our offense on it.

Again, three QBs split the season and the old coach was a run first guy. We will be running a complete different offense. Those stats can go out the window with the defensive stats that were from a 3-4 scheme.

If teams were running all over us and through gaping holes, why we were the 8th best against the run (by YPC) before Fujita went down?

Are you suggesting that they fell down and lot and didn't get up? I don't understand. It sounds like you guys want something to be true and if the stats don't confirm it... the stats are... what? Wrong?

That's a valid point. But when people say, "Our biggest problem is we can't stop the run," or, "Our defense is worse than our offense," I want to make sure nobody here actually believes it.

We were 17th in pass protection and 20th rushing the ball. The only things we ranked 21st or below at? Rushing the passer and basically every passing stat.

It is what it is. Not too many people are questioning it... or that our needs are RDE and WR. Hell, Sobo just wrote a story about which one goes first and which one goes second.

Not "if," for God's sake.

And being 8th in picks and 17th in QBR against is impressive with no pass rush. There's now way to get around it. If we had a pass rush last year, like 14th in the NFL... how much better are those stats? 5th and 12th?

BTW, yeah, the schemes are different. But the stats are reflections of the personnel as well. They aren't apples and apples or mannequins. We covered better than we rushed the passer, for instance. We stopped the run a lot better than we threw the football. Etc.

Just come out and say it!!!!!!!!!

You do want us to draft a QB with the #6 pick!!

Is it is Gabbert or Newton who entered your wet dream with a 12 incher!!

I couldn't resist Shep.
Honestly though, this years draft reeks at the #6 pick unless one of the dunderhead wonderlic failures are available to us.

I really wish we had sold the farm to get Suh last year.

So Shep.. Your telling me that being 27th in total rushing yards given up is good? 129.4 YARDS PER GAME GIVEN UP on average is good? These are REAL stats for us... whew!!!! it's ugly..unless your telling me THESE stats are wrong.. We gave up 4.1 per average rush. That's not a very good number either.

ONLY 5 teams gave up more total rushing yards than we did. Tampa, Oakland, AZ, Denver and Buffalo gave up more rushing yards than we did.. There's something to be proud of...NOT!

This is WHY I say, what I do about using stats... They can say whatever you want them to.... it just depends which ones you choose to use. Being 27th in total rushing yards tells me we suck.. and confirms why I remember teams running through massive holes.

Famous quote " He uses statistics like a drunk uses lamp-posts, more for support than illumination"
