Default The Arguments For and Against Patrick Peterson

I'm sorry for the repetitive discussion, but all of this in depth talk about Peterson really got me thinking.

I wanted to create something that discussed the pro's and con's to drafting Peterson, allowing all Browns fans and NFL fans to try and keep a level headed mind.

Enjoy!

Seemed like one point for and about a dozen against, most of which I've read and rewritten so much I'm sick of myself (!).

No. Fucking. Way. (To paraphrase Leg and a popular screenwriting technique.)

Peterson would not be my first choice with our pick. I would like it to be a WR ( Green or Jones).. But I think Peterson at least needs to be considered. He could be even better than Haden and be our #1 CB. They would make up an amazing secondary for the rest of the decade. There is no reason to believe we cannot still come up with some pass rushers in a deep draft, and some available free agents.

My preference would be WR in round 1(Green or Julio). followed by 3-4 picks in the front 7, mixing in a CB and a RT somewhere in there. Maybe a RB with our compensatory pick. That would be a good looking draft on paper to me.

PP makes great sense to me. PP or Green would be MY pick at #6. On a talent deprived team such as the Browns I find it hard to believe we dont need or cant use the most talented player in the draft especially at a position of need and we do need a CB and a FS which PP would be great at

Browns | Open to selecting CB in first round
Mon, 11 Apr 2011 11:55:17 -0700
Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert said he would consider selecting a cornerback in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft even though they took CB Joe Haden in the first round last year, reports Mary Kay Cabot, of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Tom Heckert has been saying this about as much as BW has been against it. I do see the value in taking WR (like Jones) over a Peterson. If they have done the homework on Jones I am all for it at 6. I have said this many times, I only think 5 guys are worthy of the 6th pick, and I rank them in this order:

Dareus
AJ Green
Patrick Peterson
Von Miller
Julio Jones

I think Jones and Peterson make it to us. So now what? Pass on Peterson to take Jones? I don't know because I don't have the same info as Heckert.

I don't have the same info either, but I'll say this with as much conviction as I can possibly fake: I can't fathom how a second cornerback (assuming you believe Haden can cover ones) is going to make half the impact as the true #1 WR we so desperately need.

Is somebody suggesting that we'll win more games with Haden and Peterson at CB than with Haden and Brown? Really? The guy covering second best WRs will really turn the tide that much? Keeping in mind that we were 8th in picks and 12th in scoring defense already? That we didn't lose games because we gave up too many points... but because we scored too few? Knowing that Haden moved into the starting lineup, played really well (REALLY well)... and we lost all four games? That's how much he moved the dials by replacing Wright?

It wouldn't change much of anything. His phenomenal physical talents added up to... what? 40 tackles and a couple picks last year? Really, what did it all add up to for LSU? Did Teflon Pat make them champs or something? Were they #1 in the nation in pass defense (no)?

I don't get it. The guy has become an urban legend. I'd take the WR in a heartbeat.

By the way, in the game LSU had to win, against Arkansas? The Razorbacks got the upset and Mallett won the day with 320 yards and 3 TDs. I don't know how such a transcendent, revolutionary talent as Teflon Pat let such a thing happen. His very presence on the field should have made that slow-footed junkie curl up in a ball and cry.

I have the same 5, but I flip Jones and Peterson. I don't see Peterson as an all-world once in a generation talent like some here apparently do, just a very good prospect about the equal of Haden. He is faster than Haden, but not as fluid or as good in run support. That valuation makes me comfortable slotting guys at more desirable (and, yes, need) positions ahead of him.

I've never known anybody to trade up for a corner, but I hope that's why Heckert's going all public in praising him and working him out.

That's not really a valid argument since Julio Jones and AJ Green did not make their teams world beaters, either. Come to think of it, neither of those teams won the SEC with those wideouts. In fact I thnk it had much to do about the entire team than just those two WR's, much the same with Peterson.

Look there are 2-3 locks in this draft, and Peterson and Green are two of them. Nobody is even debating this. And for the record I am not sure anyone has ever pointed to Peterson and said "the Browns have to take this guy and Heckert even says they will."

The point is the Browns need players. If taking Robert Quinn at 6 because he is there and we need a pass rusher is a need based decision, I am against that choice. If Julio Jones is deemed the pick by Heckert and his team, I all for it. If Peterson is the only choice I could live with that also.

But to say Peterson did not make the LSU a great ballclub is silly logic. As I stated above, that same silly logic could be said about Green and Jones. And shit while we're at it didn't Jamarcus Russell win a NC? He should have been all-pro by now.

I get why you don't want Peterson - hell you have over 1300 posts here and I bet 150 of them are about Peterson. But if Green and Dareus are gone - all but certain - then what is left is a sure thing in Peterson, a possible Von Miller, and a not so bad Julio Jones.

It is possible. Doesn't mean we are all here saying the Browns have to take Peterson and that we want him like most wanted Berry last season. Possible. Could happen. Might happen.

I think you can stop debating the pick now. Or do you not understand the logic behind what I just said?
