Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy will organize workouts in Austin, Texas, this week for his fellow offensive teammates, according to The Plain Dealer. McCoy grew up in Texas and starred at the University of Texas in Austin from 2006-2009.

The newspaper's source said that Cleveland wideouts Josh Cribbs, Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiski, Carlton Mitchell and Jordan Norwood were among those headed to Texas, along with running back Peyton Hillis.

"I think it's great," general manager Tom Heckert told the newspaper. "If they do it, great. If they don't do it, I don't think it's a big deal. They'll be ready when it's time to go."

Massaquoi wrote on his Twitter account Wednesday night that he was "Finally packed and ready for Autin, Tx." Cribbs wrote Thursday morning that he was on his way.

Players and coaches have not been permitted to have any contact since the owners imposed a lockout on March 12. According to The Plain Dealer, McCoy was given a copy of new coach Pat Shurmur's playbook before the lockout began.

This why ya gotta love character guys that appreciate their jobs. I am guessing Colt's dad is behind this somehow with the facilities and arrangements. Its also why come draft time the kind of person someone is means so much. This stuff makes me proud to be a Browns fan and I think we are close to turning the corner and being good for a long, long time. BTW, except for Hillis, these were all guys brought in under Mangie's watch. I forgot about that Norwood kid too, my buddy that knows PSU in and out loves that kid.....possible sleeper.

Nice to see that Evan Moore is healthy and has joined them.

Note the absence of Stuckey. Should tall you something about his FA status.

McCoy winning teammates over by leading from the front
    Tom E. Puskar/AP
Second-year QB Colt McCoy has run point on organizing offseason workouts for the Browns' skill position players.

This offseason could serve as a referendum on the hold several young quarterbacks have over their respective teams.
Safe to say, Cleveland's Colt McCoy has passed the test.
Over the last month, McCoy has been the point man in organizing and planning to bring Browns receivers, running backs and tight ends to Austin, Texas, for a three-day minicamp. That camp kicked off Thursday, with McCoy having organized lodging for his teammates and procured practice fields for them to run football-specific drills.

    Carucci: Let's stay together

A team that doesn't stick together during these turbulent times is flirting with potentially disastrous results when games finally are played, writes Vic Carucci. More ...

"I'm really excited to see the guys, that camaraderie is key, especially with Colt," Browns utility man Josh Cribbs said after arriving in Texas. "He realizes if he's going to be the leader, it starts now. It's kind of a backyard thing, it has that feel to it, going to be out there like the 'Little Giants.' We don't even have a playbook. But we have our heads together, and we know it's important for us to meet as an offense."
Indeed, new coach Pat Shurmur hasn't been able to hand out playbooks, much less run any type of installation sessions with his new players.
To fill in the blanks, Cribbs said that he and his teammates have dug up film of last year's St. Louis Rams, for whom Shurmur was offensive coordinator, and come up with a makeshift version of the playbook to go through during field drills in Austin.
"We have to watch TV copies of St. Louis, mimic their routes, the structure of their offense," said Cribbs. "The idea is for it to be just like a practice day: Warm up, stretch, lift weights, and run first, then throw together as a group. ... We're doing bag drills, cone drills, and then we start throwing.
"I'm sure they're going to change (the offense) to fit the key guys on our team and, right now, it's not that important that we run specific routes, it's more important we run routes period. But you've been out of football for so long, you want to get back in the groove, and this is part of getting into it."

Up until now, Cribbs has been splitting time working out in Cleveland and at API in Los Angeles, and he's like everyone else -- waiting for the labor situation to get resolved. But in the meantime, he does understand the opportunity that's here for a young team to get an edge on its opponents. Cribbs says that after McCoy proved himself as "a gamer" last fall, and after seeing the leadership he's displayed the last month, he has "won us over."
What's happening in this locked-out April has Cribbs as excited for September as can be.
"Starting early is key," said Cribbs. "We don't know how long this (lockout) is going to be, but we've already scheduled our next (camp), and we plan to get together a lot of times and do what we need to do. When I first met coach Shurmur, I told him, 'I just want to win.' And he looked at me and said, 'Me too.' What we're doing now is going to help."

That's very, very cool. I'm really digging on Colt quite a bit... and I'm really pulling for him.

If we don't go WR in one... I really do like Cobb the best of the rest, then Greg Little. It would be an "add to the pile" situation and then we'd probably address it more in free agency. If there ever is such a thing.

When you look at Watson, Moore, Robiskie, and Mo, you do see why Holmgren said "home run hitter."

    Titus Young? He'd work, too.

I think Cobb or Smith would be the two options I like. Even if they take a receiver at #6 I hope they don't forget to address the slot receiver position. Guys like Pettis, Salas of Hi and even Sanzanbacher would make a lot of sense at the back end of the draft (5 to 7).

I really don't think we have that position receiver on our team. Neither Cribbs or MoMass is quick enough out of their cuts IMO. Both are more suited for the outside. Moore may be the best option but we need to see how he works against corners and FS and can he stay on the field, health wise.

It's a concern. It'd take any kid from Toledo who wears #16, BTW (!).

I bet Salas is one of those guys who ends up going higher than people expected, like round 3 to a good team. He's just really good and really productive.

Jernigan's a great slot, but I think he's gonna get overdrafted, like McCluster.

I liked Salas at the Senior Bowl. Haven't heard much about him in all the draft talk but I'd bet a pint that he turns into a very solid slot guy at the next level. I could see a playoff team looking for a possession guy overdraft him.

But, Pettis is a beast. Maybe not as quick but big with nice hands. He reminds me of a Joe J. type of 3rd down go to guy.
