Default The Tale of Quentin Jammer

Indulge me. It's a good story.

A while back, San Diego drafted a corner named Quentin Jammer at #5 overall. That's not the only connection: He's also 6'0" and 205, pretty big for a corner. Amazing athlete. He's had a very good career.

But I found this odd stat that really jumped out for me. Here are the Chargers QBR defense standings the past four years:

2007: 1st
2008: 24th
2009: 17th
2010: 4th

Wow. Really good... to really bad... to pretty bad... to really good. All with Quentin Jammer, that very highly drafted corner. Now watch how closely their ranking in sacks correlates with that:

2007: 5th
2008: 22nd
2009: 13th
2010: Tied for 2nd

So Quentin Jammer was part of a very good pass defense when they were getting pressure on the quarterback... and part of a very bad one when they weren't.

It doesn't appear that Jammer is the X factor. It appears that the pass rush is what matters most to the Chargers.

I think THAT'S what Madden, Tomlin, Brooks, and the others are talking about.

BTW, the story gets even better when you consider that late first rounder Antoine Cason has been the other starter for the past three years... two really bad ones and then a good one.

Two first round corners. Good when there's a pass rush, bad when there isn't.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with Merriman and his injuries, it must all be corners. Look at the injuries in 2008 and 2009.

You sure a CB didn't run off with your wife around 2008.

That's the point: It ISN'T about the corners! They were good, then bad, then bad, then good... completely dependent upon the pass rush!

And yes. Cornerbacks took both my momma and my wife. Mouthy little fuckers.

(The corners, not my womens.)

I see your point Shep...

I get it, your logic is undeniable. I think everyone just wants to give you shit, just because.

They probably also don't want to believe you because of your anti-corner bias.... which also makes sense, because your anti-corner bias, creates an anti-pass rush bias in your opposition

but if people actually read what you have to say im sure they believe it

This board is... just like most workplaces.... and social groups... pretty political

But its fun nonetheless!!!

GO BARKING HARD!!!

Once you gets Sheps nuts out of your mouth you might want to point out to all of us who it is exactly that doesn't think we need help on the line?

My board reads like this. Dareus, Miller, Bowers, Fairley, Green.

My guess is the Browns board looks similar. We'll see in a week.

If none of those guys are there at 6 (one of them will be) then we either pick up Peterson as clearly head & shoulders above who else is left, or we try our damnedest to trade down.

Not sure the infatuation with stating the same thing over and over and over and over and over. Thank God the Browns drafted a stud in Haden last year, when Shep was railing just as hard against him.

Wright sucks, Brown is on his last leg ...we're going to be desperate for a corner real soon. This year, I think we are going D-Line.

Ouch. No agreeing with Shep allowed, damnit!!

So you think Wright went into last year called a potential Pro Bowler, then his deal with the devil expired? He's permanently bad?

I don't agree. I think Wright or Brown would rank pretty high among second corners, or at least acceptably high. I listed a LOT of UDFAs and total unknowns, especially in the corner-friendly 4-3 where safety help is there, not blitzing most of the time.

I don't mind an alternate plan. I think we all agree that WR and the DL have to be addressed like crazy. I know there's more than one way to Mecca.

I just think it makes more sense to go WR first, then hit the front 7. More depth there.

I don't listen to the pundits. I don't think Wright ever was very good. He's a wannabe Deion Sanders who refuses contact and has a higher opinion of his skill than what reality actually dictates. He might be OK as our 3rd CB.

It's amazing to me how inflated the opinions on this guy became simply because nobody was throwing in his direction due to the absolute atrocity that was the cornerback position elsewhere on the team.

Everything you have stated about Jammer and the Chargers is true, I would also like to add that Jammer is not an elite CB, and has never been considered one. I don't think he has even made a pro bowl to date

That's a good point... and I racked my brain trying to figure out if the guy was ever really considered "great." Seems like he's never sucked and he's never been benched, he's obviously been durable, but he wasn't the God of Coverage he was made out to be in that draft.

I just think Gods of Coverage are more rare than people want them to be. There's like one in the league, in spite of all the annual hype. And he wasn't as God-like last year. The rules changes didn't help.
