I love this pick, I really do. A lot of guys are excited for the potential he brings to our rush defense which really has ALWAYS been piss-poor but to be honest, with the DE we drafted as well I'm just excited to see if these rookies will start for us and the kind of chaos they will create on that end of the ball. I like that we gave the DL some TLC rather than the cookie cutter approach we have been using on the O and D line the past few seasons. I like Taylor's attitude and you watch that Oklahoma video, you see the potential that he has there to be a beast beside Rubin.... I wonder if he might even end up being BETTER than Rubin.

We had a pretty good draft, and I'd like to start seeing some results.
Fans already looking to next year and I don't blame them.
I think we will have things to be excited about that we lacked last year and we have some real facepalm moments just like last year.
It's going to be tough.

Trip Tweaks Taylor’s ‘Tude

By Don Delco
OBR Browns Reporter

A year after Phil Taylor visited Kenya, the defensive tackle remains motivated.

Phil Taylor decided that he was not going to waste his talent in the summer before his senior season at Baylor University.

At that point, his college football career was far from stellar. After two years at Penn State, he was suspended and then kicked off the team after his alleged role in a fight at the student union.

“I wasn’t going down the wrong road,” Taylor said in his post draft press conference. “I just made a mistake as a young guy there and I learned from it. You can only get better from learning from things you do in the past, so I learned from that and I just moved on and it made me better today.”

Last April, the Cleveland Browns drafted the defensive tackle with the 21st pick of the 2011 NFL Draft. The Orange and Brown Report caught up with the Baylor beat writer for the Waco Tribune, John Werner, to get his perspective on Taylor.

“There was a lot of hope in the 2009 season that he was going to have good year,” Werner said. “He didn’t live up to expectations.”
Taylor sat out 2008 per NCAA transfer rules before entering the 2009 season with high expectations. He was voted as the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2009.

“It was tough knowing that I can’t go in there,” said Taylor, of his 2008 season.

“It humbled me a lot and made me work even harder and it got me better.”

In 2009, Taylor finished with 25 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and a half sack with one interception, but he didn’t work hard enough. He was overweight, out of shape and that cost him a consistent performance. According to Taylor, he hovered around 380 pounds that first season at Baylor.

Taylor found motivation and perspective in the summer before his senior season. He took a mission trip to Kenya with fellow student-athletes in May of 2010. It was then Werner said Taylor realized what an opportunity he had and that he was wasting his talents.

“He saw how the people lived over there,” Werner said. “The kids over there were drawn to him. He was a giant to them and he was good with those kids.

“He came back with a better attitude.”

Less than a year later, Taylor (6-foot-3, 337 pounds) is penciled in as a starting defensive tackle for the Browns.

“He worked a lot harder before his senior year,” Werner said. “It really started before the trip after the disappointing junior year. He started working harder, watching his weight and that Kenya trip made him realize he has a great opportunity here and he wanted to set himself up for the next phase in his career.”

Taylor lost 50 pounds and he credited that weight loss to his strong senior season. Taylor finished last season with 62 tackles (38 solo) with seven tackles for a loss, two sacks and one forced fumble.

“He’s a good run stopper,” Werner said. “He really didn’t rush the passer a whole lot. The thing is he’s big so he took up a lot of space and opened up things for other guys. Their defense wasn’t very good but Phil was the bright spot.”

It was Taylor’s body-type that drew interest from NFL teams including the Browns, Werner said.

“Phil is a big, blocky guy with quick feet and he takes up a ton of space,” he said. “He moves well for a guy that big.”

Taylor was the second Baylor player taken in the first round at last month’s draft, as offensive lineman Danny Watkins was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles at 23rd overall. Two years ago, Baylor offensive tackle Jason Smith was taken second overall by the St. Louis Rams.

“Baylor has done a really good job recruiting and developing their linemen,” Werner said. “Last year, they also had a third-round pick (offensive lineman) J.D. Walton go to the Broncos.”

As for how Taylor will translate at the next level, Werner expects Taylor’s professional game to mirror his college years.

“I think he’ll be the same kind of player,” Werner said. “I don’t seem him as a big-time pass rusher, he’ll mostly be a run stopper and that might free up other guys to get a better pass rush.”

Off the field, it appears Taylor continues to possess the motivation and drive he developed a year after his trip to Kenya.

“I love to win and I hate to lose,” Taylor said. “I’m going to come in here ready to work and do what I have to do to play.”

I only saw them in a 3 man front a couple times in all those videos; but it was clear they wanted Taylor over Center on 98% of the plays. He drew a double team almost every time but the back 7 there didn't seem to capitalize on that.

Thanks for the videos!

For what little it's worth, the guy Grossi is watching to judge the trade is Fairley, a more traditional 3-tech the Browns could have taken at 6. I didn't want Fairley so I won't be on that bandwagon.

Hard to compare two guys when they were drafted miles apart. Cleveland passed on Fairley at #6 and took Taylor at #21 and got Little with the second rounder, Marecic with the 4th rounder (I think) and still have an additional first rounder next year and a fourth rounder next year. They did also give up a third rounder in the trade back up.

Grossi is a bit off base saying you compare Fairley to Taylor. How about Fairley to Taylor and Little and Marecic and who ever we get next year.

Actually a pretty dumb comment by Grossi because he doesn't have in info to compare the red flags either. Neither guy was clean but a lot of teams passed on a great talent in Fairley for a reason.

Simply put you can't compare one guy against another because it wasn't that we picked Taylor over Fairley with the #21 pick. Fairley was long gone.

Grossi is so off base about his hatred of trading down. It's stupid how he chooses to represent his opinion on this. He talks of getting elite players but refuses to acknowledge this franchise has had years of taking high bust picks that set us back years. It's almost like he just takes a side against whatever they are doing just to disagree. He whiffed a mile on this.

Grossi is just insane with his hate for the trade down. He wants star players, but we can't even field a starting defensive line. He would of rather took JJ and had Schafering and some other UDFA starting on the DL. That is ludicrous behavior to me considering the selections we got in return.

Bingo, my friend....................................

Holmgren, Heckert and Jauron have said they felt that the team needed to get younger on defense and also needed to get tougher and meaner up front. Jauron said he wanted size, quickness and guys who play with an attitude and he got two guys he tagged in the week coming up to the draft. They could have only done what they did and still picked up Little and addressed other needs with the trade down.

But, even with Taylor and Sheard they lack depth taht has potential and talent. In a 4-3 you need at lest 9 defensive linemen and I can only count about 5. Same with LB. We have a starting 3 on paper but one is Jackson who hasn't played in two years because of injuries.

I concerned that if we don't add some players on defense through FA that we are one or two injuries away from a disaster. How much can you count on all the UDFAs on the DL and keep your fingers crossed with the LBs.

Totally agree Berns. He is just so blatantly wrong on this that it is hard to respect the guy. This team did a dream trade and he is acting like the 6th pick of the draft would have taken them to the Super Bowl. To be honest, what Mankok did was good too, and if Robo and Momass end up flourishing in the new system then that draft will look way better.

It is ridiculous for anyone to have doubts about the trade. You are also not paying top ten wad, either. Grossi is acting like the 6th or 5th picks of these drafts are so many miles ahead of the latter parts of round one and the other acquired picks. Really an obtuse viewpoint IMO. I don't mind disagreeing and I don't expect Grossi to always think the same as I do but come on, this is just flat out wrong and stupid.

It's amazing that this team is finally doing things the right way and he is whining about it. I actually believe that Little will be a better pro than Jones, and if that is the case, then this would go down as one of the greatest trades in draft history if the other picks perform, and that is even before next year's picks. The only argument is if the lockout costs the Browns those picks. However, that is not really his point, he is saying that a top ten pick is the end all be all for a team that can't field a roster.
