Default DA vs. Whitehurst

Seems like that's the decision Seattle and Arizona will be making, based on Anderson's visits there and this report:

Seattle winning would take them out of the running for Jimmy Clausen. And if you want Claustrich, that's obviously a good thing. If you want Eric Berry...not so much.

I'm not sure that signing either of these scrubs necessarily preludes teams Seattle from drafting Clausen (if they dig him, of course). Unless they're stupid enough to think Whitehurst or DA is actually "QB of the Future" material....

I don't consider either guy "QB of the future" material. But if these teams are willing to give up a 3rd round pick for Whitehurst, they probably do.

I'd rather have DA than Whitehurst, and DA comes for free. I'd be SHOCKED if someone bites on Whitehurst at that price.

I have been told that the ideal system for Whitehurst is a scheme that values the vertical, down the field passing game. He is a QB who brings good value and is much more polished than the majority of rookie QBs coming out this season.

Not unlike Troy Smith — who is stuck behind Joe Flacco in Baltimore — Whitehurst needs an opportunity. He isn’t the type of player that comes into camp with the starting gig locked up, but he does provide a competitive environment if he ends up in the right system. And, he could be the type of QB who flourishes when given that opportunity in August.

Carroll has scheduled a private workout with Clausen in april. He tried very hard to get him to come to USC out of high school. He has said before that he likes Clausen a lot.

I think it would really surprise me if he didn't take Clausen at #6.

With Hasselbeck's injury history I could see them adding someone like DA as their 3rd QB.

Then again, they really need a LT.

Haven't seen anything that would indicate Whitehurst to Seattle is a done deal. If things were to move quickly, it'd be with Arizona; Seattle doesn't have a 3rd rd pick, so they'd have to arrange a deal with San Diego to acquire Whitehurst.

Funny... I thought you were comparing DA w/ David Whitehurst, who bounced around the league awhile ago... thought THAT was a good comparison.

This probably takes on greater relevance now that Quinn appears to be done in Cleveland.

Quote:
Whitehurst weighs offers from Cards, Seahawks

The Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks have extended contract offers to Chargers restricted free-agent QB Charlie Whitehurst, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Whitehurst, San Diego’s No. 3 quarterback behind Philip Rivers and Billy Volek, will make a decision on which offer sheet to sign within the next 48 hours, according to the source.

Once Whitehurst signs a contract, San Diego has seven days to match the offer. If the Chargers decline, the team that he signs with would owe San Diego a third-round pick (the restricted tender the Chargers placed on Whitehurst) unless other terms could be negotiated. Seattle currently doesn’t have a third-round selection in the 2010 draft because it traded it to Philadelphia last year in order to move up in the draft and select WR Deon Butler. However, Seattle has discussed other forms of compensation that have met guidelines approved by San Diego.

The fact that the Cardinals and the Seahawks have extended offers to the fourth-year veteran who has yet to throw an NFL pass means, at the very least, that they plan to add depth behind Matt Leinart and Matt Hasselbeck, respectively. It is more likely that Whitehurst could get an opportunity to compete with both quarterbacks, who aren’t locks to start for their teams in 2010.
If Washington goes with Okung and Seattle gets Whitehurst, we very well could be facing a Claustrichocracy in Cleveland.

David Whitehurst is Charlie's father.

Yeah, with Quinn and DA gone, I have a really hard time seeing the Browns passing on Clausen... if he makes it to 7.
