Cleveland Browns QB Colt McCoy to host fullsquad camp July 10-12

CLEVELAND -- Browns quarterback Colt McCoy is hosting his fourth players-only lockout camp Sunday through Tuesday in Texas.

Organized by McCoy and linebacker Scott Fujita, it's also the first fullsquad camp of the offseason. About 40 offensive and defensive players are expected to attend.
Josh Cribbs has dubbed the sessions "Camp Colts."

McCoy said recently that the 5-11 record of 2010 was "not acceptable'' and that the players are doing everything they can during the lockout to turn that around.
Veteran players are even helping the rookies and younger players pay some or all of their travel expenses to attend.

In addition to on-field drills, players will watch film and do conditioning. McCoy has been teaching players the new West Coast offense and has the system down pat himself. Quarterback Seneca Wallace helped him instruct players on the scheme at the last session.

The camp will be the third hosted by McCoy in Texas. The second one was at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea. Browns coach Pat Shurmur has said he's thrilled the players are holding the workouts to get a jump on the season.

Great news!

Just curious about something...have ALL teams had player only workouts? Or is this average?

I heard that Cincinnati, I think, had player only workouts with better turnout.

I think the packers are the only team not to have one. Aaron Rogers has been catching it since he's supposed to be the team leader..but the HC essentially said it's a dangerous game to play with injuries..so essentially Rogers has the coaches blessing NOT to have one. You get hurt at one of these your screwed because it's a non football function.

I'm glad Colt's taking the initiative and that the team is taking the initiative to get things done here. I think that whatever we can do to get acquainted with the new system will help us monumentally and Colt leading the charge is great to see. Like Sez said though, if someone gets hurt they're SOL... which is something I didn't really want to think about before this.

Fans already looking to next year and I don't blame them.
I think we will have things to be excited about that we lacked last year and we have some real facepalm moments just like last year.
It's going to be tough.

Great article at cleveland.com with Fujita's quotes. Very complimentary of McCoy and you have to love having Fujita stepping in as the defensive "captain".

While I see us being one of the most negatively affected teams by the ongoing labor issues, its encouraging to see this type of initiative from our team.

By the way, both Taylor and Shear plan on attending so that's fantastic news as well.

Workouts like this may not have any value to the Packers, a stable team with little turnover using the same systems for a while... but they mean a ton to the Browns. The fact that McCoy feels like he totally gets the WCO and its terminology is terrific, and it also shows why keeping Seneca Wallace in the fold was a terrific move.

Four sessions is a lot. Colt and the receivers won't show up in late July "cold." They'll have heard the words, run the routes, and watched film. They'll have a pretty solid foundation.

My guess is somehow the coaches have tape of the sessions and are making corrections and observations.

Very good points Shep, these are WAY more important to a young team learning a completely new system and it establishes team leaders.

Also, the fact that Colt is teaching the WCO to others will help him learn the system better himself, in my experiences.

Nice camp report from Mary Kay Cosmetics. Especially like the positive review on Little.
