Browns announce several moves

This morning, the Browns formally announced several moves that had been reported on this blog in previous days. Here is a summary of the announcement:

The Browns signed two unrestricted free agents: running back Brandon Jackson (Green Bay Packers) and safety Usama Young (New Orleans Saints).

The Browns also re-signed offensive lineman Billy Yates.

Kicker Phil Dawson signed his tender as the Browns' franchise player, tight end Evan Moore signed his tender as a restricted free agent and linebacker Marcus Benard and defensive lineman Brian Schaefering signed their tenders as exclusive rights players.

The Browns signed seven of their eight drafted rookies: defensive lineman Jabaal Sheard, wide receiver Greg Little, tight end Jordan Cameron, fullback Owen Marecic, defensive back Buster Skrine, offensive lineman Jason Pinkston and defensive back Eric Hagg. Defensive tackle Phil Taylor, a first-round pick, has yet to sign.

DOMINIC ALFORD – Appeared in 42 games with 21 starts at Minnesota (2007-10)… Saw action at both right and left guard… Attended Shaker Heights High School in Cleveland.

KYLE ANDERSON – Played his first two years at Western Kentucky (2007-08) before transferring to The Citadel (2009) and finishing his collegiate career at Georgetown (Ky.) ANDRE CAROLL – Started 28 of 32 career games at Delaware State (2007-10)… Led the team in tackles as both a junior (56) and senior (88)… Started all 10 contests as a senior and notched 88 tackles and four sacks… Attended Neptune (N.J.) High School.

L.J. CASTILE – Played one season at Delta State (2010) after transferring from Houston (2007-09)… Tallied 60 receptions for 854 yards with 16 touchdowns while at Houston… Posted 67 receptions for 900 yards with 13 touchdowns during senior season at Delta State… Attended LaMarque (Texas) High School.

JAMES DOCKERY – Tallied 106 career tackles and six interceptions while at Oregon State (2007, 2009-10)… Recorded a team-leading four interceptions as a senior en route to earning Pac-10 Conference honorable mention… Attended Palm Desert (Calif.) High School.

JABARI FLETCHER – Started 41 of 51 career games at Appalachian State (2007-10)… Notched 21.5 career sacks… Totaled 60 tackles, nine sacks and one interception in 13 games as a senior… Attended Grady (Atlanta, Ga,) High School.

CARL GETTIS – Appeared in 54 games with 50 starts at Missouri (2007-10)… Totaled 236 career tackles and four interceptions… As a senior, registered 48 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, while starting all 13 games… Attended Fort Zumwalt West (O’Fallon, Mo.) High School.

DARIAN HAGAN – Played in 38 games with 26 starts in his four seasons at California (2007-10)… Collected 124 career tackles, two sacks, four interceptions, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries including one that he returned 82 yards for a touchdown against Colorado in 2010… Earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors as a senior… Attended Crenshaw (Los Angeles, Calif.) JUAN NUNEZ – Started 25 of 37 career games at Western Michigan (2007-10)… Totaled 190 career receptions for 2,337 yards with 24 touchdowns… Earned first team All-MAC honors after recording 91 receptions for 1,032 yards with 10 touchdowns as a senior… Attended Miami Carol City (Fla.) High School.

JARROD SHAW – Started 16 of 23 career games at Tennessee (2007-10)… Opened games at both guard spots and left tackle… Started all 13 games as a senior with eight at right guard and five at left guard… Attended Northside High School in Lafayette La.

ARMOND SMITH – Attended both Hutchinson Community College and Shorter College before transferring to Union (Ky.) High School.

SIDNEY TARVER – Started 30 of 40 games at Tennessee State (2007-10)… Registered 144 career tackles, 4.5 sacks and two interceptions including one he returned for an 89-yard touchdown in 2009… As a senior, started all 13 games and totaled 62 tackles and 3.5 sacks… Attended Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.) High School.

TROY WEATHERHEAD – Finished his collegiate career (2007-10) as Hillsdale’s all-time leader in passing yards (9,544), touchdown passes (67) and completions (812)… Named the 2010 GLIAC Player of the Year after setting an NCAA all-division record with a 76.9 completion percentage… Also totaled 3,215 passing yards with 26 touchdowns… Spent four weeks on the Cleveland Gladiators’ (AFL) roster in 2011… Appeared in one game and completed 10 of 14 passes for 178 yards with four touchdowns… Attended Comstock Park (Mich.) High School.

JEFF WOLFERT – A former walk-on at Missouri (2006-08) who went on to set the school single-season and career scoring records… Connected on all 185 career PATs and 59 of 70 (.843) field goals… Spent 2010 with the Omaha Nighthawks (UFL) and converted on 9 of 10 field goal attempts… Attended Blue Valley West (Overland Park, Kan.) High School.

ALEX WUJCIAK – Three-time All-ACC selection at Maryland (2007-10)… Finished 10th on the school’s all-time career list with 381 tackles… Started all 38 career games and collected 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and four interceptions… Attended Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, N.J.) High School.

Looks like the biggest moves we'll be making this offseason (!).

We're definitely gonna need Brandon Jackson. He will see some playing time; I guarantee it. Hillis plays too hard to not get injured and Hardesty.... well, they have a seat waiting for him on the IR bench. It's already got a little card with his name on it. :P


Usama Young is another player for a position we need. I think he's gonna see playing time as well, but pehaps more because we need him and less because of imminent injuries. XD IIRC he is an average player.... can't be any worse than Wright, right?

I'm not gonna worry about all those UDFAs.... just a bunch of scrubs and hopefulls. The media/fanbase will no doubt cling to one or two of those guys and hype them up during preseason and then we'll watch them get cut, because -hey- he actually did suck. Just like every year.

I really liked what we did in the FA last year... Jackson and Young are two solid signings, but other than that I still am underwhelmed because there's so much work needed on this team. I really want to see us sign a couple useful bodies to our front 7. I hope Heckert will continue to wheel and deal and fill up our holes cause hell, we need it.

The recurring theme I see with those UDFA's is that the majority of them had starting experience with their respective schools. 12 of those players had over 20 starts given their respective positions. That's something I like to see. There's a meticulousness to these picks and though it's hard to expect that even a few of these guys are going to emerge as potential NFL-calibre starters for this team, it looks like we've brought in guys who will compete for jobs on the NFL roster. That's pretty much the essence of the moves we have made so far. Camp bodies, and depth. We will see if we lure anyone in with the weekend but I don't know.

I am looking for these three to have a slight chance. One of them could make the team. The rest will fight it out for the PS, if that.
