I'll get the link, but it was referenced on OBR via Twitter. If the Browns "strategy" seemed crazy, it should: They're on the cheap because of too much dead money, per Shefter. Now, we could decide Shefter just chose to make up a story very few people really care about but I kinda doubt it. No way this team isn't aggressive in free agency in some way, shape or form. You have needs, you have money, and the economics have changed with the rookie cap: You're gonna have to pay veterans a bigger slice of the pie. What they're doing can only be rationalized by the biggest of Kool-Aid guzzlers... so this was some pretty comforting news to me. Heckert and Holmgren aren't crazy. We're broke. EDIT from ESPN, on Cowherd's show: http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=6827072 Last edited by Brown Warrior; 08-02-2011 at 05:38 PM. |

There is a clause in the new CBA that requires teams to utilize over 90% of the cap. With the Browns being close to $40m under the $120m cap, they will have to eventually use quite a bit either on FA's or on players currently on the roster. So, dead money on coaches CAN NOT have anything to do with the strategy. What is more likely, is the Browns are waiting to see what they have in their young kids and then pick up players that are cut after the first couple of pre-season games. They warned us they would not be making any big splashes in FA, and they haven't. But that doesn't mean they aren't in the market for guys that get cut. Keep your pants on (and Shep, that goes double for you...I mean at LEAST to pairs, no commando)...the Browns will sign more guys before this is through.

Its fluff, just like 99% of the rest of the shit Shefter tweets about. It's not about drinking kool-aid It's about NOT blowing things out of proportion and NOT over analyzing and having the PATIENCE to let things happen. Christ have we even had a full week of Free Agency?
__________________ BROWNS 2012: Its Weeden's job to lose, it was the second we took him #22 overall. We had a pretty good draft, and I'd like to start seeing some results. Fans already looking to next year and I don't blame them. I think we will have things to be excited about that we lacked last year and we have some real facepalm moments just like last year. It's going to be tough. We aren't Barking Hard for nothing. WOOF WOOF WOOF! ![]() |

| My bad, but then again, that may make this all the more reasonable. The Browns have 2 1st rounders next year, and may be in the market for a QB (yes, I know) if Colt doesn't make the grade. They may need the cap space to get those signed.

It's the most logical explanation I've heard by miles. Yeah, no cap floor this year. I wish. Dimitri Patterson is the latest signing? He was full-on toast after his first two games last year. The most picked on corner this side of Eric Wright. Maybe it's a wash. And I'm totally a Blood. |

| What is confusing to me is this: the cap floor "per team" does not go into effect until 2013. Now all that needs to happen is the total dollars spent by ALL teams needs to hit the cap floor of $3.6B or something like that. Which is 90% or something close. SOOOOO.....some teams can go over the cap ceiling? Fuck it who cares. We have football. |

And also.......what does the FA market look like in 2012? Could it be better than 2011? I admit I suck at searching out this info because it takes me hours. See now THIS is "the most logical explanation by miles." |
