Default Looking back at passing Maualuga

With the new scheme change, how bad does it look now that we draft Robo two slots above Rey Rey? We would have depth a linebacker but we would be without a receiver. That's ok, because we still would have drafted Little and maybe went after a receiver in FA. Thoughts?

It was Mangini and co. who drafted Robo....who knows what this regime would've done in that draft.

I actually think it looks worse that we drafted then bailed on (in only 2 seasons) a natural 4-3 DE in David Veikune.

Which is why i dont buy the Holmgren vs Mangini and the move to WCO/4-3 conspiracy theory.

At least we'd have depth.

DQJ is a better MLB than Rey IMO anyway. Just older.

In that draft, Heckert & the Eagles got a starting LB in the 7th round in Moise Fokou.

The Eagles' philosophy has been to draft a lot of linebackers, mostly Day 3 guys, and see who pans out. Bet we'll start seeing that kind of stuff in Cleveland.

I believe taking Robo was Mangini's draft choice or Kolkinis or whoever was the 'controller' in that scenario. Either way I liked the Robo pick then and I still like the Robo pick. Having
Rey Maualuga would be nice but really we would still be questionable in our LB depth with or without him. I'm with Legacy, I'd rather have a healthy DQJ...

We had a pretty good draft, and I'd like to start seeing some results.
Fans already looking to next year and I don't blame them.
I think we will have things to be excited about that we lacked last year and we have some real facepalm moments just like last year.
It's going to be tough.
We aren't Barking Hard for nothing.

Beyond that.............I really like what I have seen of Titus Brown so far in camp and in the first preseason game.

Did you actually watch Maualuga against the Lions? The guy STILL hasn't learned how to wrap up on his tackles and keeps going for the ESPN highlight hit, smart move passing on him actually.

He's actually a lot worse then DQJ in coverage also. MLB in a 4-3 have to be able to drop into coverage. Maualuga (from what I've seen last year) struggles in space and in coverage. Got to be the first guy taken off the field in nickle packages, which may be more then half the plays their defending.

Well, it looks like neither Rey or Robo were very impressive so far. Could we have drafted anyone else in Robo's place that would have had a bigger impact on our team?I only bring this up because I recall there was a big debate on here whether we take Rey or not. I think alot of people wanted us to take Rey, and me personally, would have taken my chances with Rey instead of Robo. (edit) I'm just someone who likes to build defense so to me adding depth at linebacker would have made sense.

BS.....Rey is far better than anything we've seen out of DQsmurf with no vision but makes consistent 6 yard downfield tackles . Sorry , DQ being better than Rey just aint true...I am on record as being Freeman,Mauluaga,McCoy and ...the wake forest diva DB(drafted by McDaniels in Denver and trading a first rounder in their next years draft to get) Small corner will play in the league a long time IMO...name escapes me but Smith rings a bell... "chuckles to self".

If we had Rey right now....we'd have a very young very good Defense. For the billionth time...MLB is what this defense NEEDS and it has for 25 years. in the best Quincy...tru dat

Have you seen Maualuga play in the NFL? As Ytown said, he can't cover to save his life, you gotta pull him out on passing downs because the kid is slow as a DT and gets burned. Not only that he can't tackle, either, he's been in the NFL for three years now and he still just smashes into people looking to make an ESPN highlight reel hit as opposed to wrapping them up and tackling them. There's a reason he's been playing OLB the last two years and on a rotation, he's not very good. This is his first year at MLB and judging by the first preseason game he still hasn't learned and thinks he's just going to knock everyone out to get his tackles. No dice.

Better than DQ? DQ playing out of position in a 3-4 scheme still put up twice the numbers of Maualuga and isn't a liability like Rey is. I'd easily say DQJ is better than Rey Maualuga.
